You can support renaming park to honor veterans

The James City County veteran organizations -- American Legion, VFW, Military Order of the Purple Heart, and Vietnam Veterans of America -- have requested that the county rename Mid County Park to "Veterans Memorial Park" and/or designate an area within the park for the creation of a veterans memorial garden.

The garden will provide a quiet place for reflection, and serve as a reminder of the sacrifices that have been made to preserve our freedom. It is envisioned that the garden will consist of trees planted as "Living Memorials," gardens and benches. All costs for the planting of the trees, and gardens would be at the expense of the requestor wishing to add a tribute. The Veterans Memorial Garden, which will be created over time would complement the existing, and master plan amenities of the park.

If you are a veteran, have a family member or friend who is a veteran, or support veterans, we urge you to submit your comments supporting this effort to the address below or you may email them to parks.rec@jamescitycountyva.gov. All correspondence must be received by Oct. 19 to be considered in this process
