JAMES CITY – The Williamsburg-James City school division's chief financial officer has resigned effective Sept. 12, 2014, after accepting a position in Henrico County Public Schools, a school spokesperson said Wednesday.
Terry Stone, who is also the vice chair of the King William County Board of Supervisors, was appointed as the school division's CFO in May 2013 and began the position the following month. WJC Schools spokeswoman Betsy Overkamp-Smith said Wednesday that Stone is leaving for a job as assistant superintendent for finance and administration with Henrico County Public Schools.
"This was an opportunity close to home for her – one that doesn't come up very often," Overkamp-Smith said in an email to the Gazette.
Stone called the decision to leave a difficult one “because I have completely enjoyed working with the WJCC School Board, superintendent, cabinet, and staff.”
“It has been a pleasure to work for WJCC. The team is completely dedicated to the students and second to none,” she said in an email to the Gazette.
The Gazette reported in May of 2013 that Stone served as director of financial operations in Hanover County Public Schools between 2008 and 2013, and also served as a member of the King William School Board between 2004 and 2011.
In a statement to the Gazette, superintendent Steven Constantino said Stone will be missed and called her knowledge of county and school financial processes “unmatched.”
“In her short time with us, she elevated our ability to not only budget to support our efforts, but to evaluate financial systems within our division that resulted in significant efficiencies,” Constantino said. “While I am disappointed that her time with us was short, I am grateful for all she did for our division. I will miss her.”
Stone’s resignation was accepted as part of a host of personnel changes approved by the School Board on a 6-0 vote at its Aug. 19 meeting.
