CDR gets fitness fundraiser boost

David Marmon wanted to use his love for fitness to give back to Child Development Resources, a nonprofit that has meant a lot to his family.

Then an idea dawned on him in January.

“The beginning of every year, I try to come up with life and fitness goals,” Marmon said. “One of my goals this year was to run a sub 6-minute mile and deadlift more than 600 pounds just to demonstrate the versatility of my fitness. CDR has always been part of my philanthropy, so I thought what better way to hold my fitness goals accountable than to make a fundraiser out of it.”

From there, Marmon, a Williamsburg resident, started a fundraising page for CDR and began training.

Marmon will run the mile and perform the deadlift Saturday at his gym, Marmon Muscle, inside the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex.

By midday Friday, Marmon had raised $10,100 for CDR.

CDR, is a Williamsburg based charity that serves about 1,000 children and their families each year in Williamsburg, James City County, York County and Poquoson.

One of those children is Maddox, Marmon’s daughter, who was born with Down syndrome four years ago.

Maddox received care from CDR from the time she was 2 weeks old until she was 2 years old.

CDR serves children who have disabilities or developmental delays and who may have development delays because of environmental risks.

“We’re thrilled to have an individual like David step up and help CDR out. This was a personal fitness goal for him, but to include CDR in it, we’re thrilled. It’s the kind of thing we love,” CDR Director Paul Scott, said. “We appreciate everything he is doing.”

CDR provided Maddox with speech therapy and set up play dates with other children.

“To see the level of professionalism and the knowledge these therapists had was phenomenal. CDR has a great system set up,” Marmon said.

Marmon, who played football at Jacksonville State, has trained to prepare himself for Saturday.

“I really started training for the goal in June,” Marmon said.

Marmon trains daily with various exercises, including squats, 400-meter and 800-meter sprints and deadlifts.

The workout will be followed by a reception.
