Hornsby German students win online, international spelling contest

Lois. B Hornsby Middle School students won first place in a recent vocabulary competition in German.

The international online vocabulary competition sponsored by thisislanguage.com allows local students to compete against students in other countries.

Much like a spelling bee, Hornsby students had to know German words and be able to spell them correctly under time pressure.

They were matched against competitors from 107 schools across the country and 105 in the United Kingdom, according to the school's website.

At the end of the 54 hour competition, Hornsby’s German students won 1st place among all the schools competing in German.

Two students also placed in the top 10:

  • Sonya Woo, 8th grade, German 1B, 5th place overall; and
  • Varnum Bayless, 7th grade, German 1A, 9th place overall.

W-JCC School superintendent Steve Constantino recognized the local middle school's accomplishment Tuesday night during a school board work session meeting.
