James City taking applications for Citizens Police Academy

JAMES CITY - Residents who want to learn more about the daily operations of the James City County Police Department can apply by Aug. 29 to become part of the Citizens Police Academy.

The Citizens Police Academy is a free program consisting of 15 sessions that will cover the police department's philosophy, structure, traffic stops, DUI enforcement, search and seizure, handgun safety, crime scene investigations and more.

The academy meets on Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the county's Law Enforcement Center at 4600 Opportunity Way, with one Saturday session at the county's firing range.

The Citizens Police Academy, in its 39th year, kicks off Sept. 3. Applicants must undergo a criminal background check before they can be selected for the program. For more information, visit jamescitycountyva.gov/police/citizen-police.html.
