James City police to host Shred-A-Thon

Citizens will have a chance to get rid of unwanted documents when the county police department hosts its Shred-A-Thon next month.

The James City County Police Department will shred one grocery-sized bag of documents for free and will charge $5 for each additional bag during the June 3 event.

Citizens can bring up to 10 paper or plastic grocery bags or five file boxes of documents, according to the news release.

Residents are encouraged to shred any documents with personal information rather than recycle them or throw them in the garbage.

An estimated 17.6 million Americans were victims of identity theft in 2014, according to the United States Department of Justice.

The event is set up like a drive-thru with stop-and-go service, volunteers will be available to assist with unloading boxes. Shredding will be done on site.
