Former School Board chair named to Governor's board

Virginia's Governor has named former Williamsburg-James City County School Board chair to his administration.

Jim Kelly will join Governor Terry McAuliffe's Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects.

Kelly served as WJCC School Board chair until last week when Kyra Cook (Williamsburg) was selected to replace him. Kelly will continue to represent James City County's Jamestown District through the end of the year; his term expires in December 2017.

Kelly is also the manager of crane engineering at Newport News Shipbuilding and will be one of three professional engineers on the board.

"We review the applications for the licensing exams, we review complaints against engineers and engineering companies and figure out what the consequences are for violations of the Commonwealth's ethical standards," Kelly said.

Kelly said his role as a professional engineer on the governor's board is a part-time, volunteer position. The term Kelly is taking over officially ends in June, but he said he hopes to be reappointed to the gig at that time for a full, four-year term.

"It's something I've always wanted to do, maintaining the ethical standards of the profession has always been very important to me," Kelly said. "I'm pretty excited about having the opportunity."

Williams can be reached by phone at 757-345-2341.
