Last Word on an angel, Jan. 31

Met my angel

I had a very important doctor’s appointment the other day and stopped at a store for water on my way. I got back to my car and it wouldn’t start. I cried because I could not get to the appointment. Then my angel called, “Ma’am, Ma’am.” I looked and she offered me a ride. I had to take it. I didn’t care how I was going to get home, but said she would stay and give me a ride home. She dropped me off at the front door at Riverside. “Connie” was her name, and she drives a PT Cruiser. I want her to know that it doesn’t matter how long one knows someone for them to touch your life.

Does anyone know?

I would like to know if anyone knows why VDOT spent the money to clean out the ditches on Route 5 by Hickory Signpost Road, yet did not clean the culvert pipes to the driveways extending to Route 5? The last storm shows that what they did actually did no good at all in alleviating the flooding problem with rain on Route 5 without cleaning the culvert pipes. Just would like to know. Thank you.

Professor Comey

I think it’s very good that the College of William and Mary hired Comey to teach a course. Here’s somebody who is ethical — has done things the right way and would not be swayed by a crazy person. Thank you.

William and Mary, surely you jest. I did not find it amusing. This is what we send our children to — such a pricey college — to learn this kind of ethics.

You know, I applaud the Gazette for putting Comey on the front page because now at least we know what William and Mary is doing. And, you know, they can’t hide about this stupid decision. As my husband said, “Him giving any class — teaching any class on ethics — would be like Hitler being in charge of protecting the Jews’ rights and this is how we should treat them.” Give me a break.

FBI Director Comey is certainly qualified to teach a class in ethics. What the right doesn’t like is that when he was introduced to the president, he didn’t fall flat on his face, lick the president’s shoes and kiss his ring. We need more people like Comey in government and fewer like Jeff Sessions.

I was taken aback by the many negative comments in the Last Word regarding James Comey; mostly focused on his releasing information to journalists. My feeling is that this action exhibited a very high ethical approach by a federal official, as it showed that his loyalty was to the Constitution and country, and not to the current holder of the office of the president. He did this even knowing that he would lose his job, most likely. Again, an ethical decision of the highest order.

The person questioning Comey lecturing at William and Mary is obviously ignoring the fact that our current president has a very loose relationship with the truth, ethics and morals. The truth need not be Republican or Democrat.

After he had a long, spotless career with the FBI and the federal government, why would anyone think Comey is a bad choice to teach a class on ethics? W&M is extremely fortunate to have Comey, who has a long reputation for his honesty and ethics. I do not think Comey has suddenly changed, regardless of what he has been through with the current administration. Comey has a background of ethical service and has now personally experienced unethical treatment and injustice for nothing more than being an honest man. Wow! There could not be a better candidate to teach ethics to William and Mary students.

Comey teaching ethics is akin to Donald Duck teaching elocution.

Too late for pie

Well, I read in the Last Word where a couple of readers had sent in comments about how good Shoo Fly Pie is. I drove over to the Shoo Fly Dairy to try it out and see how good it was, but the Shoo Fly Dairy was out of Shoo Fly Pie on a Wednesday afternoon at 1 o’clock. I guess you better call and check before you go over there to try it.

Looking for …

I'm a volunteer at Heritage Humane Society, and I noticed that there is not much canned cat and dog food on the shelves. I'm sure that the staff would appreciate donations from our community. Thanks!

Does anyone know of an Aveda-trained hair stylist in the Williamsburg area?

Keeping it straight

When we pay a person’s salary, we tell them what to do. In an old folks’ home, the residents pay the employees’ salaries but the employees tell the residents what to do. In 1970, Archie Bunker defined an old folks’ home as a place “where dingbats take care of dingbats.” Today, an old folks’ home is where scatterbrains take care of scatterbrains. Editor’s note: We ran this comment recently, but one critical word was incorrect.

Road worries

VDOT needs to put signs at stoplights all over this community, instructing Virginia drivers to pull up to the white line so that the magnet in the road will trip the stoplight.

Guns

Another day, another school shooting. This time, two dead in Kentucky. And another win for the NRA supporters who oppose any kind of gun control in this country.

Why do they need to have guns go to church? This is crazy, after what happened in Texas. I don’t know what’s wrong with our Congressmen.

Recently, my neighbors asked me if I was in favor of the law allowing me to legally carry my gun concealed into church. My answer was a definite yes. I went on to say the following: Do you remember the recent mass killing in churches in South Carolina and Texas; did you really expect God to stop the devil at the door of the church?

Where you live

It’s too bad that the areas of Richmond and Northern Virginia dictate what the rest of the state of Virginia wants to be, state or federally elected, and that’s really not fair because they’re over populated. That’s not what everyone wants.

Immigration

Why the rush to take care of illegals? The government estimates “dreamers” will cost taxpayers $25.9 billion over the next 10 years. Social welfare costs outweigh potential contributions. An illegal immigrant receives an average of $5,692 in federal welfare benefits compared to “native” American households, which receive $4,431.

In regards to the “Dreamers,” I think that any of them that are employed, holding down a job, paying taxes and have no criminal record, or in college with means of support should be allowed to get citizenship. If they are on welfare or they have criminal records, etc., then send them back to wherever they came from. Thank you.

Tax plan

I can’t believe that the liberal states of California, New Jersey, Maryland, Connecticut, Illinois — they want part of the tax cut corporations are getting for tax relief. So that they’ll come back to America? And you know what I would tell these states if I was a company? Well, so long. You don’t want me to employ more people? So instead of giving it to you, I’ll go to another state that wants to be friendly to me. And I’m sure they would love to go to Tennessee or Georgia or Mississippi, Louisiana — some place like that. All they’re going to do is hurt themselves.

Cat behavior

I wanted to put this out there for all the cat lovers and owners: If you have a cat, especially a male cat, and they uncharacteristically start trying to urinate outside of their litter box, this is very likely due to a urinary tract infection. The cat is not being bad. In males, especially, urinary tract infections can be deadly and need to be treated as soon as possible.

New club rules

The most exclusive old man’s club in the history of the United States is about to have a cultural shock, because they’re going to have to figure out what maternity leave standards are when senator and retired disabled veteran Lt. Col. Tammy Duckworth gives birth this spring. Just how liberal is their policy on maternity leave going to be?

Stock market

Someone mentioned in the Last Word yesterday that poor people don’t have stocks. Well, even if you’re poor, if you have a retirement through your job, you are in the stock market. If you have a 401K, if you have an IRA, if you have mutual funds. That is connected to stocks. So, the stock market doing as well as it’s doing, you also are doing well. And if you weren’t aware of this — it really is important for people to educate themselves and learn what it is that they have and what it means. Good luck to us who continue to have some retirement bonds or for us who work for companies that have some retirement for us.

Getting chilly

Just got a new puppy; cost me a lot of money. So far doesn’t listen to me and just lies around doing nothing. Named him “Congress.”

Offshore drilling

A recent commenter was in error: President Trump did not request an exemption for Florida from off shore drilling, the governor of Florida did, just as the governors of North Carolina, South Carolina and, yep, even Virginia have requested exemptions.

Not so funny

If Fred Siegel ("Retired in Williamsburg" cartoonist) had attended Virginia Tech, he would know the difference between "it's" and "its."

A little history

We sincerely hope every American with children will see the movie “The Post” to grasp the unconscionable practice of our government through the years of the Vietnam debacle to lie to us. It is so disheartening on so many levels, but it serves as a reminder that governments that want to send their citizens to war are not always sacrificing citizens for good reasons.

Old snow

I was born and raised in Williamsburg. We rarely, if ever, have a snow that needs to be shoveled. I don't remember shovels, snow blowers or anything like that growing up. I'm lazy. I still just tromp through the snow and hope for the best.

I had Khalid from We Fix Computers come to my house to work on my computer. He cleaned the computer, he upgraded a couple of things for me and he listened very patiently while I asked my novice questions. I highly recommend him. Thank you.

Up in Washington

Trump is not pushing for war with North Korea. But if he really wanted to destroy that country, all he'd have to do is send in Democrats to run it.

When the Democrats agreed to end the shutdown, the president had an opportunity to be gracious and he showed that he is utterly incapable of doing so. Instead, he chose to be utterly divisive by tweeting the “Dems caved.” You can bet they won’t cave again. He is all about winning, even if winning is losing for the American people the principles that have made this country great.

Even if the evangelicals turn a blind eye to allegations Trump paid off a porn star, Melania hasn't. She canceled her plans to go to Switzerland with her bum of a husband.

A year ago when President Barack Obama left office, I was paying $20 for a tank of gas. Today, 1 year later, I paid $27 for the same full tank. Next month Trump's great, beautiful, fantastic tax cut will leave me with about $4 more a week in my paycheck. Somehow, because I'm not one of his billionaire cronies, I feel like I am getting the dirty end of the stick.

The writer was incorrect when he stated gasoline prices have increased under President Trump. Jan. 4, 2017, was the last week Obama was in office, the average price for regular unleaded gas was $2.553/gallon. The average regular unleaded gas price on Jan. 18, 2018, was $2.522 per gallon. Even using "new" math shows a reduction, not an increase.

Robert Mueller should cut to the chase and skip the fireside chat with the President. He should have three uniformed U.S. marshals deliver an "eyes only" package to the President while he is out on the fairway at his Florida mansion, compelling him to appear in front of the grand jury. Having him testify under oath without an adult handler to hold his hand would get to the bottom of the swamp fastest and at the lowest cost to the American people.
