Last Word on tourism taxes, Feb. 7

Tax for tourism

I think the proposed 1 percent added sales tax for James City, York and Williamsburg is a big crock. It’s a complete, unfair burden to the citizens to have to pay this to fund tourism. Why don’t they keep doing like they’ve been doing? They’ve got taxes on the rooms and meal taxes. Why do we have to pay another 1 percent? We’re already paying more in this area because of being part of Hampton Roads. Why don’t you put this on the ballot and let the voters tell you a resounding “no,” because I’m sure that’s what they would say. But I’ll bet the counties and the city think it’s a great idea because that’s what they do. Give them money so they can spend it and waste it on more stuff.

Tommy Norment has proposed a 1 percent sales tax raise for the “greater Williamsburg area” if the city of Williamsburg will drop its tourism tax increase. There are at least three things wrong with this: Norment is on the board of trustees for CW (conflict of interest?); Norment is the co-chair of the committee that is drafting the legislation (another conflict of interest?); Does he represent the greater Williamsburg area? As a resident of the city of Williamsburg, I don’t feel I should have to pay 1 percent more for everything I buy because Norment wants to curry favor with Mitchell Reiss. I’m sorry CW has mismanaged its money for the last couple of decades and that tourism is down, but I live here every day and we already have a higher sales tax than other parts of the state.

Potholes

With all the rain, a new twist of fate: Are there puddles or monster pot holes that will destroy your vehicle?

Looking for …

Is there an organization or group that might like to have crocheted small afghans/throws? I enjoy making them but don’t have anyone to give them to. Please respond to the Last Word with information about your group and contact details.

The phone number for Khalid at We Fix Computers is 757-291-3663. Thank you.

Is there an organization or a club or a church or someone doing shredding, perhaps fundraising for their organization or charity? Would it be on a weekend, a weekday, or where or when? That’s what we need to know. Thank you.

I am looking for a computer-competent person to help a technologically challenged person navigate the modern world. Please call 757-378-5630.

Wither Chickadees

I just read in the Last Word today that Chickadees is closed and it said there was a sign on the door saying you could pick your items up between 9 a.m. and noon this Saturday. Well, by the time I read it, that had already gone anyway, but I have a check there. They owe me some money, I believe, and I was wondering about that. If you find out anything about that, I would appreciate you putting it in the Last Word. I wasn’t there that long ago and I had no idea they were closing.

State of the Union

As an Independent voter all my life, I was appalled by the Democrat’s performance at the State of the Union presentation. Apparently, they are not Americans, but a spiteful, narcissistic group of enemies of America. What did President Trump say that was not truthful, hopeful and inspiring? Thank you.

I was very happy to hear our president’s speech. It was all-encompassing. He wants to bring America together. I was very disappointed to see Democratic leaders like Nancy Pelosi scowling the whole time. It certainly did not help our nation. Thank you.

Last night, President Trump talked the talk about unity and working together. Now he and obstructionists Ryan and McConnell are going to have to walk the walk before anybody in the Democratic Party believes what was said.

Trump's State of the Union was too long, boring and filled with verbal delusions. Words that have no corresponding reality to them.

The Democrats’ behavior at the State of the Union address was despicable. Democrat Americans should be embarrassed at the leadership of their party.

I am horrified about the deplorable and despicable behavior of our senators. In the U.S. Army, we are taught to salute the position/rank, not necessarily the person. I accepted Obama as the president. And, if I remember correctly, the Republicans treated him as such. But during the State of the Union address, Sens. Warner and Kane acted like little children who don’t get their way. You may not like President Trump, but he is our president just like Obama was.

Marijuana law

On Sen. Norment's proposal to erase first marijuana offense: How will the officer that tries to arrest someone for using marijuana know if it is a second or third offense if is not on record? People will feel free to use as much as they can.

Job search

Instead of another exhaustive national search for a new county administrator, why doesn't the county just let the current assistant county administrator, the community development manager and the county attorney each try the position for a term of five months and 30 days. Then after the three test runs are concluded, nearly a year and a half from now, whichever one is determined to have done the best job during their own respective trial run would get the chief administrator job. Sounds fair.

Guns

A commenter asks, “Why do they need to have guns in church?” then goes on to mention the church shooting in Texas. My answer is simple enough so that an anti-gun person can understand. Criminals don’t care about your signs and laws. By the time police arrive, many will be killed. If you want to be a sheep and let others do your fighting, so be it. As for me, I prefer to defend myself and family.

Regarding the comments about the recent sad shootings at schools and churches: It seems ridiculous to blame the NRA or our legislators. With all the regulations and policies in place, most of these shooters were able to get their weapons legally. More legislation will not work. Until we change our gun culture, making more rules won't change anything.

Recently, Williamsburg Police gave a class on what to do if you encounter an active shooter situation, but they fell short when they didn’t mention the main thing you can do to defend yourself. If you have to wait for the police to arrive, you and many others will be killed. The only chance of surviving an active shooter encounter is to obtain a concealed gun permit and practice your shooting skills. Furthermore, we need to do away with the useless “Gun free zones” — criminals don’t follow laws.

Road worries

According to an article in Wednesday’s Last Word, Virginia drivers need to pull up to the white line so the magnet in the road will trip the stoplight. Would somebody like to please explain? Thank you.

To the person inquiring about VDOT and why money was spent to clean out the ditches on Route 5 but they didn’t complete something else: I would suggest you call VDOT so you get the answer directly from the person that is responsible versus asking someone reading Last Word to give you their possible opinion. Go straight to the horse’s mouth. Call VDOT. Their phone number is listed under the City of Williamsburg in the Yellow Pages, if you don’t know it off the top of your head.

Professor Comey

It is disheartening to read Last Word comments about James Comey, because it confirms the ignorance of the electorate that resulted in the nominations of two of the worst candidates for president of the United States in maybe the history of the country. As sad as the stain that Comey has made on the reputation of an organization that we all count on for safety and protection from evil.

The markets

The DOW has been up for 10 straight months. That hasn’t happened since 1959. And for the person who said, “Well, I don’t have money in the stock market”: Neither do I anymore. But that means business is booming, and when business booms, people hire. And when companies hire and people hire, that means we’re on the move. That means America is recovering and in better shape than it was a year ago, and that makes me happy.

Eighty-four percent of all stocks are owned by 10 percent of the people. Over the next year, their assets will be propped up by money borrowed in part by the communist Chinese. Isn’t capitalism great?

Currency

Can someone with a finance background explain the reason our dollar keeps getting weaker, when at the same time our economy and stock market is doing great?

Recommended

Kudos to owner-operator and veteran Danielle Ware of Atlantic Vent. If you are considering getting your dryer vent system cleaned/snaked, then it's probably time to make this call. When I contacted Atlantic, I was able to schedule an appointment the next day. They were on time, fast, efficient and respectful of my property. I now have peace of mind in knowing that a fire is much less likely and I am amazed at how my drying time has improved — it’s incredible! Thanks for the Last Word recommendation. Reach them at 757-595-7660 or 757-621-2595.

I highly recommend Kirstyen Upholstery. He did a boat and a chair for me, and his prices are reasonable and it doesn’t take a long time. His telephone number is 757-345-1929. Thank you.

Thanks so much, Williamsburg Honda. If you are considering the purchase of a new car, we recommend Williamsburg Honda. Our salesperson, Jessica Stott, was fantastic to work with. She was a great listener and focused on our needs and interests and understood our budget issues. When we made our decision, we were very happy with our choice. When we moved on to the paperwork side of the deal, Toby Keller helped to make the process comfortable and stress free. In short, the team at Williamsburg Honda cares about its customers and we would not hesitate to recommend them to our friends and neighbors. Thank you so much!

I would like to second the bravo from a previous Last Word comment about the Designs by Jeff salon. He is a hairdresser who listens to the needs and desires of his clients and is very interactive regarding cut/style. Jeff has a cozy little shop and he is very professional and polite and won't shame you if you happen to cut your own hair. Try him and you will be delighted. He can be reached at 757-968-1383.

Please do yourself a favor and visit Goodman and Sons jewelry store in the Monticello Shopping Center. I had the pleasure of working with Bree. She went above and beyond my expectations and the store and staff are all very welcoming. Thanks so much, a forever grateful customer.

I just wanted to say that I am new to the area, and I stopped in Mel’s Beauty & Barber on Richmond Road and got a perm. I called for an appointment — I was given Janet. And, I have to say, it was the best perm I have ever had. My hair feels wonderful. She told me that she did add a special conditioner to it and it is fabulous. All the girls there were friendly and professional, and it is great to be in an atmosphere where everyone gets along. The number is 757-220-1066. Ask for Janet.

Where you live

The recent "Where you live" comment declared that it is not fair that the “overpopulated” Northern Virginia and Richmond area of the state “dictate” the results of elections. Last time I checked, the democratic principle of one-person one-vote is based on the population of qualified voters, so “overpopulated” areas are contributing to election results just as is intended. I must say, I am dismayed at the lack of knowledge of American civics shown.

Federal budget

There’s been people pointing their fingers to the Republicans, pointing their fingers at the Democrats — I think everyone needs to realize that the House, the Senate and the White House are all controlled by Republicans. They’re the ones that need to get this work done and get this budget complete. It was due by Oct. 1, and here we are, it’s February, and they still don’t have it done. They should be beginning work now on the budget that’s due this coming October. This is unacceptable that it’s taking them this long.

Up in Washington

Fuji film is taking their tax cut and absorbing Xerox and laying of 10,000 people. Thanks Trump.

How can evangelical ministers support Donald Trump? He lies constantly. He exhibits racist tendencies. He has refused to pay contractors for their services. He admitted groping women. He paid off a porn star to "keep quiet." Some pastor said he deserves to be forgiven — yes, if there is repentance, but there hasn't been — he never admits he is wrong. How can these so called “mouthpieces for God” get in the pulpit each Sunday and share God's word?

The Senate voted 95 to five to increase sanctions on Russia. Trump says he will not abide by this law because Russia learned their lesson. Lock him up.

Did Trump put a 30 percent tariff on the clothes and jewelry he and Ivanka have made in China, etc.? Of course not. He put one on solar panels, which will add $1,000 to the cost of a residential installation and cost 20,000 installers their jobs.

Time for voters in the state of Virginia to consider starting a recall election to remove our two Democrat senators that chose illegal aliens over representing the best interest and security of their legal U.S. citizens.

Who knew that Trump has such a riotous sense of humor? I got quite a laugh from his tweet attributing the Women’s March to their gratitude for all the good things his reign has done for them.
