Tourism council

Folks in the area are concerned about who will the person to be selected as to be executive director of the tourism board. The winner is the chamber. The choice will be one of their own. It will better position this group to be the go-to guys in the local tourism industry, the saviors of Colonial Williamsburg.

Great library

I’m reading that our Williamsburg library director would like to see our library redone. Perhaps we should get a new library director. Our library was rated number two in the nation. I see no need to change it. I note she has provided three options, none that I see as relevant. They speak of "inadequate parking." I would suggest a fourth option: leave our library as is and make better use of the Stryker Building, as the library was supposed to have done. As for "people space," I have yet to stand while reading a book in our library. We have a great library; let's leave it that way.

One small hitch

I am glad they have expanded the Summer Breeze concert series into September, and the change in venue to the front lawn of the Art Museums will surely make for a larger audience. Having said that, I noticed one change that may detract: We will no longer be allowed to bring a small picnic cooler or a bottle of wine to the event. I believe this will detract from the atmosphere of the summer concert series of past years. The festivities are enhanced when one can share that cheese platter or a small glass of wine with neighbors and friends. I don't see me standing in line for food trucks or other vendors who may be allowed to sell alcoholic beverages. What's next, bag searches of retired folks looking for contraband? Are you going to open my coke to smell for rum or my bottle of ice tea to see if it came from Long Island? Or in the future, will we hire "security" with some of the sales tax money in an effort to create tourism jobs?

Teachers

The writer who claims that all teachers sit around and show movies after the SOLs are finished is dead wrong. At every school I know about, a teacher can only show a movie if it's related to the curriculum and approved by the administration. If a teacher does get show a movie, it may be because students are conditioned to treat the SOLs as the equivalent of final exams and they switch their brains off once they've finished the tests. Thank you.

Some teachers bring up the lack of adequate pay because it is a real problem in our county. Some teachers have their own children on free and reduced-price lunch or are working second and third jobs because the pay is not adequate. Some teachers spend hours after school completing lesson plans, grading papers, completing report cards, reading cards, math cards, placement cards and SOL cards. Some teachers play movies while they call other students over one at a time for even more assessments required by the county, and the students are tired of pointless worksheets and enjoy seeing characters from books they’ve studied brought to life in those movies. Some teachers are actually quite dedicated to your child while you mock the teacher and further carry on the lack of respect given to the profession.

Power lines

In the news, Jack Jacobs reported the National Parks Conservation group appealed the judge’s recent decision to allow Dominion Energy to continue to build the transmission line. Should this appeal fail, does anyone know if there is an exit plan going forward, perhaps decades from now when Dominion dismantles the nuclear plant that they have replaced by wind and solar producing farms, they must also remove the transmission lines they are currently building to support their current planned obsolescence and return the James to its original pristine and environmentally friendly condition?

Money woes

I just got another letter from CW Foundation asking for more money. If CW would get out of the money-pit businesses of hotels (6), spa (1) and golf courses (2) and stick to the business of history, maybe it would stop bleeding money. CW could easily get rid of four of its six hotel properties, keeping the Williamsburg Inn and the colonial houses. When the Gazette did their article comparing CW with other historic sites, none of the others had hotels, spas or golf courses, and they were not losing money hand over fist.

Received a request for funds from the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Inc. today and replied with a request to remove my name from their mailing list. The reason I provided for this action was “Tommy Tax.” Suggest others follow my example when receiving a request for funds.

Hot dogs!

I work at the Farmers Market in Williamsburg each Saturday morning. I am shocked at how many people bring their dogs out in 90-degree weather. There were only two water bowels kindly provided by merchants. The poor dogs were so hot and found it hard to walk around — it was very upsetting. Please, people, do not bring your dogs out in such extreme heat. It’s dangerous for them.

Looking for …

I am looking for recommendations for a math tutor for my child for a college-level statistics class. It’s an approximately six-week online class.

Looking for someone to repair a small section of wallpaper.

About that wood

I am interested in the post from “Looking for” in reference to the walnut and cherry wood that was up for grabs. I am a part-time woodworker and would love to get some of the wood available. I do a bunch of wood crafts as gifts and would repurpose to others. Please call me at 757-508-2298 and I will gladly come out right away to pick the wood up.

I'm interested in the wood offered in the Gazette. Len, 804-694-6376.

Immigration question

The United States has always persecuted migrants after it uses them for cheap labor. Watch PBS “American Experience: The Chinese Exclusion Act." U.S. citizens need to be better educated in history more than two years back. Our country will not prosecute agriculture corporations for using "undocumented" workers because they know that many crops will not be harvested given the low wages paid to those workers. How many prosecutions under this administration have resulted citing the employment by agriculture corporations' subcontractor's use of undocumented workers? Seems that employing illegals is OK, but workers crossing the border to take those jobs are criminal.

It is horrible to see pictures of children who have been separated from their parents who have tried to come to the U.S. Where are all those folks who say they say they care about the unborn, but what about doing something to care for the children who are need such care help? How awful that they are being taken away from their parents.

Anyone interested in National Geographic magazines, please leave your contact in the Last Word. I have many years of copies. The magazine has such outstanding photography, maps, and educational articles. I hope some school, library, nursing home, etc., can enjoy them. Moving soon and must discard.

Getting to school

We pay taxes to buy school buses and pay for school bus drivers, yet many parents continue to clog up our local roads to bring their children to school.

Paying taxes

It is so obvious that the people stating we should all be willing to pay for other’s needs are the same people receiving the entitlements. As far as paying school taxes, those taxes should be paid by those with children using the system and the more children you have in school, the more you should pay. You shouldn’t label someone selfish because they worked hard for their money while others live off our taxes.

Guns

I almost spit up my coffee on a recent Saturday morning reading the bleeding heart's comments bemoaning the supposed "vigilantism" of two legally armed citizens killing a homicidal maniac in Oklahoma several days ago. From where I'm sitting, the prompt actions of these two individuals saved who knows how many innocent lives and saved the state of Oklahoma hundreds of thousands of dollars!

I, for one, am grateful to the armed citizens who brought swift justice to the murder of innocent people. It saved the taxpayers a lot of money and saved wasting time with trials and jailing him.

To the U.S. army veteran stating we don’t need so called assault rifles: Well, I too am a combat veteran and can attest to the fact that equal firepower must be used. When being shot at by someone with a rifle, using a pistol is mostly likely useless due to the distance involved. If you could guarantee me that I will never be a victim of someone with an illegal assault weapon, I’ll give up my legal one.

Howard Motor Company on Second Street is not only an excellent auto repair shop, but they excel in customer relations. Some time ago after service, they called to tell me they found a mistake on pricing a part and were crediting me for the error. Last week, while traveling out of town, a bolt on a brake caliper they installed a year ago came loose, causing major damage to my pickup. The repair was done out of town at great expense. I took the damaged parts and the dealer’s receipt for the repairs to Josh and Jeff at Howard. Jeff voluntarily and without any discussion cut me a check for the total amount of the dealer’s repairs. I highly recommend Howard Motor Company for service and customer relations.

Thank you to Emily's Doughnuts for showing my husband much kindness. Not only are their doughnuts absolutely delicious, but their customer service is the best around.

I am a patient of Kingsmill Internal Medicine, McLaws Circle. I have received exceptional care. My caretaker, Amy Harrelson, and the entire staff from the front desk to checkout are warm, professional and efficient. Amy Harrelson gives me the care and attention a patient deserves. If you are looking for a practice, I highly recommend looking into this one. It is a total team effort directed at their patients.

We Fix Computers by Khalid, 757-291-3663. We had a wonderful experience working with Khalid on our computer. He explained the various trouble spots we had and proceeded to take care of them one by one. This was our first time working with Khalid and we are very confident and comfortable with his style and expertise. We give Khalid a five-star rating.

Empty shelves

A large grocery store has been having a problem stocking their shelves for at least two months now. Whole sections are just empty. Once I wanted foil cake pans, and there were none, just empty where they should have been. Not one jug of distilled water on a Friday, most salad dressings missing. I’ll just pay a little more and go where I can find what I need!

‘Roseanne’ canceled

ABC Entertainment is clearly justified canceling ‘Roseanne’ after the actions of its star reinforcing her lifelong foul-mouthed racist statements. Over the years, her actions have repeatedly shown that she has no place in front of an audience. There is no reason that in modern America for anyone to consider her comments worthy of a laugh line.

With the cancellation of ‘Roseanne’ by ABC, once again we understand that our First Amendment only applies to the liberal left. When TV shows make derogatory remarks about our president, that’s all right with the producers of those liberal shows, but God forbid a conservative speaks their mind. I guess I’ll be doing a lot more reading, as liberal TV disgusts me.

A couple of things on Roseanne Barr: I don’t think conservatives are embarrassed because of her because she’s not been a conservative. She’s against Wall Street; she’s a Democrat who voted for Trump because she can see people are hurting and there needs to be jobs. And that goes along with her thinking on her sitcom, that this is not a highly-paid family that owns a corporation. They’re a nice, middle-class family. Did she mess up? Well, yeah. Finally, ABC’s very left-leaning. They wanted to cancel her once her ratings skyrocketed over Trump. Now, were they right to cancel her for her comment? Probably. Now, having said that, do I like what Valerie Jarrett has done? Not at all. There needs to be a discussion on her incorrect behavior while serving under the president, but, nevertheless, the comment made about her was inappropriate.

I think Roseanne Barr was fired because of her race. It has to be that because there was another NBC commentator that made severe gay/homophobic remarks that received a zero penalty for hers, and she is of a different race. I think these are racist actions that the networks are taking. What do you think?

With all this stuff about Roseanne and the people who come out publicly to defend that kind of action, it shows this country, which has never lost its racist bias, has been stoked by a person that has done the same thing that happened in the 30s. Pick a target, insult them long enough and enough of the non-thinking masses will follow you and give you power. We have lost the sense of what this country started as and civility is gone. All for the sake of power and riches. Even the Christian ethic has been abandoned by those that have believed in it and call themselves Christian. Tough to believe we sit beside some of them in church every Sunday. Amen.

Up in Washington

The writer of "Up in Washington" praises Trump for ignoring the Constitution. Saying Trump will ignore the Constitution until it is changed to serve his purposes is supporting Trump's obvious intention to be a dictator. That is treason.
