Last Word on trees, Oct. 10

CW trees

Congratulations to Colonial Williamsburg for achieving the rank of Level 1 Arboretum. Wonderfully deserved! I hope tree lovers will come enjoy, and perhaps the city will take notice that there is such a category and choose to save the beautiful trees at the shopping center on Richmond Road. It is a joy to have beautiful, mature trees and to shelter in their shade, marvel at the colors and textures.

Noisy times

The noise coming from the Warhill Sports Complex through the night on Sept. 28 was Relay for Life. I am sure that if anyone bothered by it had called the police with the complaint, they would've been informed of this and JCC police would've happily stopped by to ask the students and families to quiet down a little.

Oct. 15 is the last day to register to vote in the 2018 midterm elections. You may register online at elections.virginia.gov. This site also gives local, in-person registration. You can also check your current registration, find your polling location or request an absentee ballot. See you at the polls!

Downtown plaza

Kudos to Colonial Williamsburg for proposing to convert the P3 parking lot to a pedestrian plaza. A plaza will give the locals, tourists and students an open space to enjoy downtown and its many amenities. While some people will be upset about losing parking spaces, be cognizant of the fact that mall and other commercial lots provide little or no parking at a business door. Some accessible spaces will be available in the proposed configuration.

Arcade and beer?

We remember very well when game machine were the rage: children stole money from their parents to play the games, skipped school to play the games, became addicted to playing the games. Oh sure, and put them in a beer hall — that’ll work! Are slot machines next?

Looking for …

Paper bags are needed at Grove Christian Outreach, 800 Pocahontas Trail, 757-887-1100. Thanks.

To the person looking for John Jordan: He is working at Bruce’s Super Body Shop at 5521 Richmond Road. John would be happy to work on your vehicle if you come in and request him.

I’m in need of a responsible landscaping service for lawn and tree maintenance, and I would appreciate a referral from anyone who has had good service. I’m also in need of someone to come to my home and help me with windows. Thank you.

Can anyone tell me of a vegetable stand where I can purchase Kushaw or Cushaw squash? We called them “Japanese Sweet Potatoes” when I was growing up in Gloucester. They are large, green and white crook-necked squash and usually available this time of year, along with pumpkins. They make the most delicious puddings. My previous source on News Road has closed and I am desperate to get my fall Kushaw fix.

Good news! Michelle at Great Clips is back for those of us who were missing her.

We need to learn how to use Windows 10 and would appreciate references from the public about how to go about doing this. Thank you.

I am looking for a competent and reliable lawn service provider and would appreciate anyone making a recommendation in the Last Word. Thank you.

I was given my first pawpaw fruit to eat the other day, and I am in love, but I need help. Could somebody please tell me where pawpaw trees grow in Williamsburg, so I can go and pick these fabulous fruits? Thank you so much.

We are in need of someone to deliver and stack a load of seasoned hardwood. Please leave your number in the Last Word, as we have not seen any ads about firewood recently. Thank you.

Did you lose your car key at a garage sale on Oct. 6? Call 220-0051.

Does anyone know of a hairdresser who does black hair and who uses a flat iron with a setting on it that controls the temperature of your hair? Someone who is very reasonable and doesn’t trim the ends every month. It would be appreciated if you would leave the message in the Last Word. Thank you.

We recently purchased a coffee table and the sticker on it says, "Walnut Grove furniture by Dean Richards in Toano, Va." The store did not have contact information. We were wondering if anyone does. If you have contact information, please call us at 757-565-5947, as we would like an accent piece. Thank you.

I need to replace a bathroom sink and countertop. It is a small job. I need suggestions on who in Williamsburg might be good to contact. Thank you.

TV news

Far from being fresh air, Fox is a massive dose of laughing gas and an embarrassment to all honest journalists.

Mail delivery

Have been trying to figure out whether we're getting mail delivery at 11 p.m. or 4 a.m. Guess I shouldn't complain. At least it is arriving. If its being delivered late in the evening however, it concerns me that it is laying in the mailbox over an extended period of time and subject to thievery.

To the folks who complain about their mail being delivered too late: Just leave it in the mailbox and get it in the morning. Then you can congratulate the postal service for delivering it so early.

Kimball movies

When the Kimball again shows movies such as “Tea with the Dames” and “Science Fair,” we will be satisfied. Sad we have to wait. How can it be Williamsburg doesn’t have such movies now?

Too much debt

I find it disturbing that there are companies that offer to relieve people from paying their debts, such as taxes and credit cards. People who live above their means have no business incurring debt they can’t or have no intention of paying. If you can’t afford something, you don’t buy it.

Stuck like glue

Container labels used to be put on with either an animal- or vegetable-based glue that was water based and, like the caller said, can be soaked off. But today, most of the labels are put on with a self-adhesive, sticky glue that hangs on like a bad in-law. The easiest way to get it off is to fill the bottle with the hottest water you can without getting the label wet. Let it sit for eight or 10 minutes, and the glue will most likely release. What doesn’t release can be wiped off with a little bit of acetone or fingernail polish remover.

A very good product is “Goo Gone” to get rid of those sticky labels. It is very good to get off stuff stuck on bottles and whatever. Thank you.

Pesky calls

Is anyone else receiving calls from Cape Charles, Va., on a daily basis? I blocked the number and they call again from another extension. I have to keep my phone on mute now. Is there anything that can be done? Thank you.

Retired in Williamsburg

I enjoyed the “Retired in Williamsburg” cartoon of Oct. 6. It was excellent and I enjoy the “Retired in Williamsburg” on other dates as well. Well done.

I was responding to the comments about the cartoons from Fred Siegel. I agree on all of that stuff. I am a conservative — Hannity, Rush Limbaugh — but when those gentlemen express something that I think is wrong or I’ve heard 100 times, I exercise my right to push the remote or change the dial. That’s all you have to do. Close your eyes or turn the page.

Just a tease?

I’m seeing a lot of ads for Ollie’s in the paper in the last month. Does that mean that Ollie’s is planning to come to Williamsburg?

Now you know

The word is that former FBI Director James Comey fell into the pond on Golden Horseshoe hole No. 2 recently while playing a round of golf. Emerging wet, it goes to prove he really doesn’t walk on water.

Road worries

I’m disappointed in some small and local businesses. If you’re going to put your business name on the side of your vehicle, while honking, driving aggressively and recklessly, don’t be surprised when I take my business safely elsewhere.

Recently, I backed out of my garage while the garage door started to close, which I could not hear. The resulting cacophony of noise was a shattered rear window on the SUV and many scratches on the roof, etc. I took it to Bruce's Super Auto Body Shop. Everyone there was extremely nice to me. They fixed it in a timely manner and they cleaned the inside also. My wife is very grateful for their service. We highly recommend them for your auto repairs. You can find them at Bruce’s Super Auto Body Shop is at 5521 Richmond Road, 222-3655.

Karen Washington is an exceptional housekeeper. I have trusted Karen with my home while I'm away. As a result, I return to a clean, refreshing house. Karen cleans with precision and detail. She cleans and keeps your home neat, all within a reasonable fee. Contact her at 757-879-2522 or franwhitny@aol.com

We had a delightful lunch today at Anatolia Grill in New Town. Food was delicious! We started with lentil soup and ended with the rice pudding. Attractive, clean, hospitable, reasonable. What more could anyone want? They’re at Anatolia Bar & Grill at 5203 Center St., 757-220-3840.

If you should need your house pressure washed, I would like to recommend David Dean, owner of Just Right Cleaning. He has just finished our house, garage and shed and the results are outstanding. Not only was his price very fair but he is very customer friendly. He can be reached at 757-508-3958. Give him a call.

I would like to recommend the best pet groomer in the Williamsburg area. The name of the company is “Toni’s Glamour Pets.” Phone number 757-254-5306. She is great with my dog and does a wonderful job grooming my Bichon. Thank you.

Jack Robinson, 757-871-9700 (jackrob36@gmail.com), is your man for serious koi pond maintenance. He knows his business, has a sure and experienced eye for tough pond problems and can repair most any commonly occurring difficulty. For us, he diagnosed, then repaired leaks between the waterfall and stream mechanisms and the pond liner (after 16 years the bolts, washers, and nuts holding them together were disintegrating!).

Scam in waiting

Yesterday, we received an email from “Our Vacation Store” (a no-reply email) with subject line: “Thank You for your Purchase.” It listed the primary member as my husband, with a member ID beginning with RCIT. I wasn’t aware that the member ID was not his number, and saw only the transaction date and package price. I asked him when he came home if he had booked something, which he had not. If you look further, nothing was charged; nothing has been charged on our credit card, but we’ll keep checking. The email seems to entice you to call the phone number listed, where you could be strong-armed to pay.

New NAFTA

The president's replacement for NAFTA is good for big oil, drug makers and retail businesses and bad for consumers. The good part of it is The Village People can sing and dance to USMCA.

Electoral College

The Electoral College did exactly what it was designed to do. Our nation was established as a republic, not a democracy. A pure democracy, one where every vote has equal weight, has historically led to mob rule and then anarchy. We are fortunate to have had intelligent founders who established our Constitution.

Why should the vote of a person in Wyoming carry greater weight than the vote of a person in California — or for that matter, Virginia? The vote of every individual voter, wherever they live. should have equal value. It is important, also, to remember that the Founding Fathers, for all their virtues, were elitists who believed that the common people — people being white men who were property owners — were not capable of the judgement necessary to choose their own leaders.
