Price shopping

To the person doing the price check for medication: That's a great job, and a lot of people don't realize that shopping around, you can get better prices. One thing you also should know is that generics aren't required to have the same amount of the positive medication in it as the brand name. In other words, there can be more filler—non-working medicine, filler—in the generic. My husband and I actually had generic that just didn't work, but the original did and it was because it had more of the active medication in it than the generic did.

Internet service

Can someone please tell me what recourse I have in JCC to change its approved internet providers? I have enjoyed excellent broad band internet for years and in the last six months the service has changed. The signal is dropped frequently. I skype for business and this is a problem. I decided to change to cable-based internet but the reviews were not good. What are/can we citizens do to address this problem? Editor's note: The county does not approve internet providers or cable TV providers. You can do an online search for those companies that do business in JCC.

Free to you

I have many outside planters and ornaments to give away. Call 220-0496 after 3 p.m. Thank you.

Rules of the road

You can add traffic symbols that local drivers don't understand—double yellow lines, especially those on Airport Road when you're passed by a little red Toyota.

With the new and increased traffic in the Wellington subdivision, there really needs to be four-way stop at the intersection of Loch Haven Drive and Ashington Way. It is a blind intersection at one point and can be difficult to navigate.

As I have said before, Quarterpath Road is left as a dirt road so that those people who live at Kingsmill who have four-wheel drive SUVs can go four wheeling safely.

Looking for ...

Where can we drop off or donate old and used shoes and slippers? We know we can drop off used eyeglasses and athletic shoes at the Quarterpath Recreation Center.

We have just moved into the Williamsburg area and are in search of a good dentist who really cares for their patients. Would welcome recommendations. Please reply to this in the Last Word column. Thanks.

As the holiday season quickly approaches, Sidecar Santa is still looking for "Beanie Baby" type stuffed animals to give away. If you have any that you would like to give, please contact me at sidecarsanta@hotmail.com to arrange for pick-up. Thank you.

Does anyone have medium to large baskets available who are giving them away for free? Text me at 757-332-4708. Thank you.

Does anyone have the name and phone number of the chef who would come to one's home to prepare meals? It was either in the paper or one of the magazines, I think within the last six weeks or so. If you have it, if you could leave it with the Last Word, I'd appreciate it. Thank you so much.

Early education

I find Heather Cordasco's position on education interesting. Her web site has a statement that she will work to ensure that our students have the tools to compete in tomorrow's global economy. When she was on the WJCC school board, she said she didn't believe pre-K was necessary for students who aren't considered at risk. Vast amounts of research has proven how vital and necessary early childhood education is. We must invest in our future by investing in educating our children. Heather Cordasco puts low taxes ahead of quality education. A very short-term view in my opinion.

Marching bands

With the stories on our local school marching bands, is there a "demonstration"? "Competition"? Or a "show 'n tell" open to public where we could see all the three? four? bands do their show? Hope so!

Congratulations

I'd like to congratulate Coach Doug Smith and the New Kent Middle School Lions football team, in their 20-8 championship victory over Berkeley Middle School at Bailey Field this past Sunday.

If you have not tried Chop Sticks, the Vietnamese Restaurant located in Williamsburg Crossing Shopping Center, you are missing a real treat. In addition to eating there with family, 20 of us went there recently and everyone there enjoyed their meal—some eating Vietnamese food for the first time. Great service and excellent Vietnamese food!

It gives me great pleasure to recommend Brantley and Ripley Construction for all home repair needs. Billy Brantley, with his associates Jim and Adam, just replaced French doors in my home that had fallen prey to moisture and wood rot. From the beginning, phone calls were returned, an estimate provided, and a time line established, which was met. Carpentry and technical skills were evident in every aspect of the job without loud radios or colorful language. The cleanup was exceptional. I cannot recommend this local business any more highly. Please call 757- 253-0233 or email chrismorgan.brc@verizon.net. You will not be disappointed.

We want to thank the person who recommended Lee's Auto Upholstery in Newport News. We had several small tears in our vehicle's driver's seat. We were scheduled quickly, the work was accomplished in less than one day, and the result is perfection. Prompt, courteous, and professional. What more could we ask for? We recommend Lee's at 757-595-1341 or LeesautoupholsteryVa.com.

This is for anyone needing foundation repairs. SSI is the best and the only honest company that I found after calling four different companies. They were all trying to sell me something that I did not need. They can be reached at 259-0790. Thank you.

Yes, I recently had a hot tubs company come out and look at my hot tub and they told me the motor was bad on it and it cost me $120 service call. I saw an ad in the Last Word about Howard's Hot Tubs. I called him and he came out and he put a motor on it—was a lot cheaper and he only charged a little bit more than half what the other company charged me for a service call. He did a very good job. His telephone number is 757-741-3871.

Cheering athletes

As a season pass holder for both football and basketball for many years, of course my wife and I have seen many changes. We believe the one change that has fallen by the wayside and seems go to unnoticed is the W&M Cheerleaders. These ladies and men have brought the sidelines to life. These athletes are cheering despite what the scoreboard reads, what weather they are standing in is. They just do their job and do it with pride. After watching the JMU game in person, we have a real appreciation for these athletes. W&M Athletics, you should be proud of where this team is going and the image they portray for not only W&M but for Athletics, too.

Recycling joy

What a pleasure it is to wash plastic containers and drop them into the recycling bin, without worrying whether they are a 1 or a 2 and not a 5, 6, or 7, or whether they are bottles with necks or flat trays or clam-shell containers. I applaud County Waste and James City County for coming up with the inclusive plastic recycling program we now enjoy.

Health insurance

The Health and Human Service Department reported that Obamacare premiums will soar 25% on average next year. For a 27-year old buying the second-cheapest Silver plan in Arizona, premiums will climb by 116%, Oklahoma (69%), Tennessee (63%) and Minnesota (59%). Thanks, Mr. President. We thought if we liked our doctor, we could keep him; if we liked our plan, we could keep it; and we will be saving $2,500 a year. What a joke and we believed him.

Eastern State

Yes, back in the 1970s there was quite an article in the Daily Press across the front page referring to Eastern State Hospital, "Snake pit of the 70s." This was remarked by the commissioner of mental health, and it appears that we're back on that same track again. I hope the people who are in charge of this hospital and all around it would take into consideration these people need help. These poor, unfortunate mental health people need help, and I hope that this will open up some eyes. Thank you.

Cat problems

To the person who thinks that dumping four kittens in a good neighborhood makes sense because they are natural born predators, she's sadly mistaken. The last cat we took into our home was a small kitten -- you could hold him with two cupped hands. He was scared and hungry and sick, and when he sat on my wife's lap and slept for two hours, he felt safe. We took him home and he's now with three other cats that will enjoy long, healthy lives.

If you know nothing about cats, as the writer of "Cat Problems" obviously exhibits, take the kittens to the local shelter, where they have a chance to go into homes where they will be loved, instead of condemning them to a cruel and needlessly harsh, short life that will end in death or disfigurement because the local wood are filled with foxes and other, larger predators.

Presidential politics

Republicans are correct in saying that the election is rigged. However, they are the ones who have rigged it by nominating a non-electable general election candidate. Do you really think Gov. Kasich or Sen. Rubio would be trailing Hillary in the polls if one of them were on the ballot instead of Trump? Would Gov. McAuliffe be in office if the Republicans had nominated Bill Bolling instead of Ken Cuccinelli? My guess is no.

Class 101 in the logic of lying starts now. In an apparently unauthorized video, Trump admitted how much he enjoyed groping women. Then women started coming forth and admitted they were groped. At latest count at least ten women, in essence, provided the smoking gun. But Trump denied doing what he had previously bragged about doing, calling the women liars. So, class, the question is who lied and who is telling the truth. You see the dilemma. Trump can't be telling the truth in both circumstances. He either lied previously or he is lying now.

Yes, I think we all can recall when the Clintons were in the White House previously. They were selling bedrooms, not even a bedroom, the Lincoln Room, for $25,000 a night. Now, what's going to happen if Hillary's elected this time? We already know about her organization—charitable organization—the only charitable people that are getting it are the Clintons. Thank you.

The justice system in this country is rigged when powerful men like Bill Cosby and Donald Trump can get away with sexual assault, regardless of how the assault occurred an insult is an insult. At least Bill Cosby did not try to destroy the reputation of the women that spoke out against him, like Donald Trump will try to do. The only reason these women have come forward now is that Trump had the audacity to run for president.

When you look at the WikiLeaks, the newest one on the Clinton Foundation and Bill Clinton's personal income—it's what I've been saying for months and months. The Clinton Foundation gave 5% to charity. They funneled a lot of money through various aspects of the foundation into income for Bill Clinton. What donors were told they were going to get was not necessarily what they got. It's very extensive, this newest WikiLeaks report. It smells rotten.

You need to put your country first, your party second. By Hillary's own words, the Russians were behind all the Wikileaks. If they had unfettered access to emails from the DNC, Podesta and Hillary's emails, you can guarantee they have the classified emails and the quid pro quo emails showing Hillary selling access to your State Department. This allows the Russians on a minute's notice to blackmail her should she become president.

There is only one person on the ballot who has the ability to change how Washington, D.C., works, Trump. He's a true outsider. The Hillarys of the world have given us the mess we are in. Trump is the only one who has any chance of reforming, cutting the size, and changing the direction of government. Only a true outsider, no matter how imperfect, can shake things up.

Why this close to the election are we only hearing about Hillary's emails that may or may not be relevant, yet nothing is being mentioned about the case against Trump University, Trumps ties to Russia as well as the 12 or 13 cases of sexual aggression against women. And that's not even mentioning his temperament. He scares many people to think he could have access to the nuclear code!

Donald Trump is not my idea of a great presidential candidate. Far from it. However, the manner in which Mrs. Clinton handled emails is deeply troubling to me. She seems oblivious to the fact that what she was doing could do great harm, perhaps deadly harm, to our military, intelligence and diplomatic personnel. There is no way that I could vote for her and then look members of the military straight in the eye. That is the "difference it makes" to me.

Someone cited a statistic that 70% of citizens feel the government is headed in wrong direction so why are 50% voting Democratic and status quo? It is because many of us in those polls are unhappy with the Republican majority, do-nothing Congress, that is the "wrong direction." We also will vote for Democrats for Congress to end the "status quo."

Donald Trump made the statement that thousands of Muslims celebrated when the twin towers came down. Not true; never happened. He has made various statements when campaigning and later claimed he never said them. Sitting in the Oval Office will not change this man. This is who he is. Do we want untruths beaming out of the Oval Office almost daily? Can someone this emotionally unbalanced possibly be an effective president? A Trump presidency will destroy this nation as we know it. Think carefully before you vote.
