Last Word on an old rivalry, Nov. 9

Old rivalry

A couple of weeks ago, a football game was played between the University of Virginia and University of North Carolina and that game was touted as the oldest rivalry in the South. For years, many of us were led to believe that the University of Richmond and William and Mary football rivalry held that distinction. We've heard nothing from the Tribe. Come on, Tribe! Tell us what it is.

Halloween fun

Colonial Williamsburg needs to do new programing to pull in more visitors which I understand, but this year's Halloween was a little too much fantasyland for me. With tentacle eye balls peering out of the Capitol, horses with ghosts, spider webs and hand prints on them. The riders were very healthy skeletons and colored bands were on the horses' legs. The sea witches were great, as was Blackbeard in the back of the Raleigh Tavern. It just did not have the same feel as last year.

Once again, the scary house in Indian Springs was really, really scary. Thanks to the owner who goes above and beyond putting on a fun show. It shows good, old fashioned fun on 10/31.

Lafayette swamp

I read in the Gazette about the Chickahominy and Queens Lake volunteers providing betterment to their communities. Why not have volunteers create a safe and secure pathway to use instead of the now un-allowed Lafayette pathway? Student council members, booster clubs, the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts have leadership programs such as "Golden Award" or "Eagle Scout," or others to lead the way. Seek donations from businesses. Use solar lighting and solar motion active cameras for safety and security. By using volunteers, this may be a "shorter" path then waiting for the school board to fund the project.

Free to you

We have a slightly worn gold two-cushioned upholstered sofa to donate for free to anyone willing to pick it up. Please call 757-595-0891 for inquiries or arrangements.

Job hunting

I for one have a hard time with the so-called homeless begging for money at the end of highway ramps. If you're really looking for a job, the end of a highway ramp is not the place to get a job. While driving around Williamsburg, as well as other areas, I see many help wanted signs. The police should enforce the vagrancy laws and not allow begging in public.

Well done, Bruton

Big Ups to the Bruton football team. Although the season wasn't what you wanted, you stuck it out to the end. Through your actions and those of a dedicated coaching staff, you have learned a few valuable "life lessons."

Superintendent search

Saturday's news that the school's CEO search is to be confidential is appalling to me as the number one thing that families that they wanted in the school board and superintendent positions were transparency and open communication. I very much hope that this is not going to be a repetition of the horrible lack of communication and disrespect that of our former superintendent.

School names

While Mathew Whaley School will always keep its name, I do wish that Miss Jeanne Etheridge, who was the principal there for years and a perfectly wonderful educator and person could be honored. It would be nice if some school could be named for her. It would be quite an honor to honor her memory. Thank you.

Research help

I want to know if anybody in Williamsburg or the Yorktown area had stem cell replacement done. I am doing a little research. If anybody can reply and suggest a doctor in Williamsburg or the Yorktown area, I'd be so happy. Just call the Last Word and leave your message. I'm interested in stem cell replacement. Thank you.

Water spots

I have water spots on several exterior windows. They appear to be spots from lime residue. Tried everything I can think of to clean those rascals—nothing will do it. Who in the community has some good suggestions and concoctions that I can put together to get rid of those things? Really would appreciate it! Thanks.

Thank you

Thank you, Darryl Cook of the James City County Capital Projects Division, for taking time to answer several questions for a James City County High School student's school project. Your kindness and willingness to help is very much appreciated by the student, teacher and requester. Thank you!

Thanks to Colonial Williamsburg for finally installing the handicap exit and entrance door at the Dewitt Wallace Gallery.

School supplies

I am looking for an artificial ficus tree for my classroom. I plan to start an initiative called the "Compassion Tree." If you have one that is clean and in good condition that you are willing to donate, please call 564-0868. Thank you so much!

Watching football

Given what appears to be the pro-market position of most Gazette readers, I was surprised by the person criticizing William and Mary students for failing to attend the Maine game. Blaming the consumer for low interest in a product? Is it possible that students have better things to do with their time and money than consume a product whose health costs to its participants are only just coming to light—but not because they have not long been known—and which, despite folk-wisdom claims to the contrary, they are forced to subsidize with their fees? The TV ratings for the NFL are also down. Face it, football fans, your sport is terrible and your days are numbered.

Health insurance

Is there anybody in Williamsburg or James City County who deals with helping people getting into Obamacare? Thank you.

I just read an article in the Last Word about Obamacare. You have got to be kidding me. My insurance has gone from $140 a month to $520 a month ever since he's taken office, and you think that's good? What is the percentage of that? I just don't understand—you people don't get it. A self-employed person in this world has no chance to survive.

Our state budget officials now say we will need an additional $281 million to fund Medicaid, the state-and federal-funded health insurance program for the poor. This two-year figure is in addition to the $9.3 billion Virginia already budgeted for Medicaid for 2017 and 2018. Why is this cost so high in the billions? How many people in the state receive Medicaid? We learned the state uses Medicaid dollars to pay their Medicare premiums. Obamacare is responsible and Hillary is supporting this.

It's apparent that the only people not complaining about Obamacare are those not affected by it. Those people are either government workers or teachers who get their health insurance paid for by our taxes. For the rest of us, either having to use Obamacare or paying higher premiums due to having to subsidize others, it's a nightmare.

The Bard is back

The Guild of the Virginia Shakespeare Festival has set up a committee of four to plan a Shakespeare production somewhere in Williamsburg in 2017. We are interested in soliciting support and ideas to keep Shakespeare alive in Williamsburg for future generations. Please take the time to share your ideas and suggestions, as well as ways you may want to share your experience, talent and expertise with the Guild of the Virginia Shakespeare Festival. Thanks for your support in helping keeping Shakespeare alive for future generations. Good day.

Value kindness

God wants all of us to be considerate with the people we like and the people we dislike. This is difficult to accomplish for some people because they were spoiled as a child. It is easy for a spoiled child to become a control freak. God loves all of us and God will help us to be kind and considerate with everyone.

Cat problems

I worked at a shelter for years and you have no idea how many cats and kittens had to be euthanized because of people like you who go and make the astronomically irresponsible uneducated mistake of allowing your cats to have litters of kittens and then releasing them.

Gun violence

"Gun violence" rolls off the tongue of newscasters everywhere, but once the perpetrators are sent to prison, why is it that they then make and use shivs? Could it be that the tool isn't the problem?

Quiet course

Just wondering—does anybody know why there's little or no activity at Williamsburg National Golf Course? There doesn't seem to be any golf carts, not too many people around. Just wondering what's happening over there. Thank you.

Road worries

I work at the produce stand at the intersection of Richmond Road and Airport Road, and it surprises me how many cars go across the tracks as the safety bar is coming down, way after the lights have started. Remember this saying: You may be able to beat the train; then again, you may be dead wrong.

This past Sunday, I drove my one-year-old Prius from Route 60 to Route 199 on Quarterpath Road. No problems or traffic. In 1977, I used to drive it in my Chevy Malibu to get my three young children to sleep for naps. Back then, it was very possible. Never have seen any other cars at the worst part where it's unpaved. How do you identify four wheelers from Kingsmill?
