William and Mary and the University of Richmond have the "South's longest rivalry" and are tied with Wisconsin and Minnesota as the fourth longest in Division I football. This year's game on Nov. 19 will be the 127th in the series that began in 1898. (In some years the teams played several games and there were no games in 1900, 1902 and 1943.) Lehigh and Lafayette have the longest rivalry with 152 games; Yale and Princeton have played 138 games, while Yale and Harvard will play their 132nd on Saturday. The University of North Carolina's rivalry with the University of Virginia began in 1892, making it the "South's oldest rivalry." This year's game between Virginia and North Carolina was the 121st in the series.
The first UVa-UNC game was played in 1892. They played twice, with UVa winning the first match and UNC the second. The W&M-UR series began in1898.
Free health insurance to government employees? I'm now retired with 32 years of service to two separate localities. I pay the full cost of health insurance for myself and my spouse, at $1,342.00 per month.
Thanks so much to the kind stranger who paid for our meal at Victoria's Restaurant on Sunday. We shall never forget his special thoughtfulness honoring my husband's military service and 83rd birthday. We will carry it forward. God bless.
I just want to thank the JCC Fire Department Station #4 for their kindness and never-ending visits to our home. I have a very ill husband who needs to be picked up off the floor, often in the middle of the night, several times a week. They are always kind, caring and most understanding, even when they are exhausted, I'm certain. Knowing you are there has been a great comfort to me and I cannot thank you enough.
To the writer asking if hiring someone from only your own race because you don't trust those from another race is a fair solution: Wow, you sound like a very narrow minded person to think that people can only trust their own race. When, in fact, if you were more open to meeting all people regardless of race, religion, or anything that may be outside of what you are, you could see you just don't judge people by the color of their skin, or their personal choices of religion or who they love but by the content of their character. It's been since 1963 that that was a dream for our country. So step into the real world of the 21st century and expand your circle of people and you could find all races have trustworthy people and all races have untrustworthy people.
Good zoning call
A big shout out to the JCC Board of Supervisors for the decision to turn down the rezoning request for Riverview Plantation. I have been a resident here for over 20 years and love the peaceful and tranquil setting provided by our R1 residential community. I can only hope and pray this will never change, for my home will be passed down to my children who also love it here just the way it is. Many thanks.
Our cherished Cedar Grove Cemetery was again very beautifully prepared for Veterans Day weekend. Caretaker Bill Brown and his crew worked hard to prepare the grounds. The American flags were then placed on the graves of those who served our country by two older gentlemen, Dave and Rodney. We greatly appreciate the efforts of Bill Brown's crew and these two volunteers. Our deserving veterans were greatly honored. Thank you to all who made this happen.
Many thanks to all of the eating establishments that offered free meals and appetizers to all of the veterans, active and reserve military personnel on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2016. Your recognition of this day is fully appreciated by us.
The Clinton Foundation has a four star rating from Charity Navigator, contrary to the post of last week. It ranks very high with 94.74 of 100. Please, I'm begging readers, double check your "facts" before assuming they are true. We all deserve more truth in our lives.
This September 2016, The Clinton Foundation received four out of four stars — the highest rating that Charity Navigator gives after a close look at the charity's finances. The rating is based on annual federal tax returns. A charity could have a four-star rating but also be on the watch list. The Clinton Foundation is no longer on their watch list.
More than food
I think most people know that FISH gives out food to the needy but did you know that they give out other things, too? They give out clothing of all sizes; XL especially goes quickly. Also small housewares are given like sheets, comforters, blankets, towels, pots and pans, toasters, etc. Next time you clean out your cupboards and closets, please think about FISH.
Someone mentioned about the shelves being empty at FISH. I don't understand this when Martin's grocery store just had its customers donate to FISH, I believe, in September. Where are the funds that were collected? And I am sure they were not the only ones that had a drive for food.
What a great article about Jamestown High School and their veterans' skits. These youngsters are lucky to have teachers with the vision of Mr. Stone and Ms. Smith to teach them important fundamentals of the cost of freedom. Moreover, in light of the recent election, we all could learn from the quote of the young freshman, Faith Marasigan, which is worth repeating, "We all came to school today relatively free from fear, and able to speak our minds and enjoy many freedoms others around the world don't have. For that we thank our veterans." Good job, Jamestown High School.
Looking for ...
Looking for someone who does specialty cakes. Please post your number in The Virginia Gazette or call 757-603-1244. Thanks.
I am looking for someone who will come to my home in the Newport News area and can rid my garage and attic of either squirrels or mice. If you know someone, please contact me at 757-952-6236. Cannot be expensive. Thank you.
My primary care physician retired and moved away. I need a new doctor, but everyone I call is either not taking new patients or will not accept Medicare. I'd appreciate any ideas. Many thanks!
Could somebody please tell me where Kristin Green, formerly of Cindy's Classic Cuts, is? I'm trying to locate her. Thank you.
Can somebody please recommend a person who can refinish my table top and not charge as much as a new table?
To the person saying homeless people should be job hunting: One of the first questions on a job application is your address and contact information. Many homeless people cannot provide this, making it difficult to impossible to get a job. These people also have a difficult time getting around town to job hunt. Perhaps a donation of a one-month bus pass would be appropriate to help them.
Free to you
Piano looking for loving home. Interested in donating it to someone who can benefit from its use. I have to move by Nov. 28 and all I need is for someone to come and carry away! Please call 757-592-8667.
I am reading the paper this morning and see that there are Photoshop 6 and 7 training books available. I am interested in acquiring those. My cell phone number is 305-505-8204. Please let me know if they are still available. Thank you for your time.
Free firewood! Recently cut mixed hardwood located in Barhamsville. Come get it. Please call 757-897-0572.
When I began a new garden this fall, I found Kyle Backer of Capitol Landing Mulch to be most helpful. Their hardwood bark mulch made my plantings look great. This new business has added to the improved look of Capitol Landing Road when you enter town from that direction. They can be reached at 221-6669. I find that placing old newspapers beneath the mulch prevents weeds from sprouting and helps to retain moisture.
For those interested in oak antiques, or have wood furniture that needs repair or refinish, I'd like to recommend Smith's Antiques in Sumerduck, Virginia. Sumerduck is an easy day trip from the Peninsula (just off US 17 in Fauquier County). Laura Smith operates the shop her father established in 1959. She has a large selection of oak antiques, including many unusual pieces. We have purchased a few items from Laura and she has glued and custom refinished more than a dozen pieces for us. We have been uniformly pleased with her work. Check out her web site at www.smithsantiques.net.
When I put Joe's Mobil Repair in the Last Word for small engine repair, I forgot to put his phone number, 757-570-5708.
Need professional, prompt, and reasonably priced tree service? I highly recommend Arborista Tree Care. Owner Christie Cramer returned my call promptly, analyzed the issues thoughtfully, and showed up when promised to do the work. She did research on our particular, not-so-common tree and recommended we try to save it after a battering from Matthew. 757-345-8688.
My husband and I spent last Saturday with three delightful people, the employees of Let's Get Moving & Storage. They were hard-working, efficient, flexible with our request of making an additional stop at a local consignment store along the way, and above all, very pleasant. We highly recommend this Toano-based company. Reach them at 364-0834.
Call for assistance
How sad the Kristiansand resident wouldn't come and talk to someone rather than put a comment in the Last Word about the "overgrown hedges." If you'd like your concerns addressed, please call Karen at 645-3222.
Odd house odor
Has anyone else had experienced a new "cat litter box type odor" this fall which they have never had before? I know of two other residences that have. Of course, we do not have a cat or other pet. We have enclosed crawl space without any mildew and have not found a solution to the problem. If anyone with knowledge as to the cause or cure could submit their advice to the Last Word, it would be appreciated. Thanks.
I am not certain how many of those complaining about the recent election have ever had a civics class. The Electoral College was established in the Constitution to protect the interests of the smaller states from the larger ones, i.e., Virginia initially. And it has worked. In this election Clinton won California by 2.9 million votes and New York by 1.5 million. If our elections only selected presidents by the popular vote, then California and New York would be the only states that matter. But look at the map and see that 30¼ states were won by Trump while Clinton won 19¾. Also Trump won approximately 91% of rural counties. Do we really want a system where elections are decided by the urban east and the west coast states while ignoring the heart of the United States?
I went from being told that my third party vote for Gary Johnson was a "wasted vote" to "it decided the election." I'm damned happy about it too.
Now that the protest/rioting has begun, we now know that Hilary supporters are the real "deplorables." They are the young liberal Democrats who never worked for a living, nor served in our country's military. This means that their parents are also "deplorables," as they certainly didn't teach their children well.
Isn't it interesting that the same newspapers and television news shows that predicted a Hillary win are now telling us who will make up Trump's cabinet. Newspapers and television news shows should stick to reporting facts and save the opinion for the editorial page or comments.
The many Hollywood media darlings who promised to leave the country if the Republicans won the election would do millions of us a big favor if they would keep their promise and do it very soon.
Canadian prime minister said he was willing to renegotiate NAFTA. Mexican prime minister said he's willing to modernize NAFTA and work with Trump to make changes. Merkel said she would like to meet with Trump next week before Thanksgiving. Hollande would like to meet with Trump next week. President-elect Trump issued a request to meet with Theresa May, the prime minister of England, who'll be meeting with him next week, and he may be meeting with Merkel and Hollande also. So much for nobody wanting to work with Trump.
I want all people who will be affected by the racist, homophobic and sexist Trump administration to know that the majority of decent people do not agree with his agenda. I will never support this man and he will never be my president!
If the Trump people had rioted against Obama, they would have been called racist. If Hillary had won and they had rioted, they would have been called misogynists. But they can riot against Trump because he is a white male. The right needs to be trained on how to riot. When the Tea party had a "get-together," they left the area cleaner than it was when they got there. If I can live through eight years of Obama, you can live through Trump!
Donald J. Trump was crucified by the media and some of his own party, even ex-presidents. "I do not know him," they said. He was resurrected and is now president-elect, 45th President of the United States! How wrong were they all. I hope and pray that we will support him that he will be a good President and leader for all Americans!
If Trump follows through on his plan to let people wait till after they contract a blood borne virus, leukemia, breast cancer , heart disease, etc., to obtain health insurance, within a few years only people over 65 will have health insurance because there won't be anyone left in business to sell it to the rest of us.
All the postings in Last Word with post-election attacks on Democrats and Clintonites are disconcerting. Mr. Trump tweeted, "We will all come together and be proud!" That will not be possible if his supporters continue to be ungracious winners. A less abrasive attitude will go a long way towards gaining support from Democratic voters. We should also remember that Mr. Trump will be the winner of the Electoral College election, but more people actually voted for Mrs. Clinton. That means that Trump voters are actually in the minority.
I'm willing to follow Monty Python's "Look on the bright side of life" and consider that the next four years Saturday Night Live is going to have an unlimited source for political comedy coming out of the White House.
