Last Word on empty shelves, Nov. 19

Health insurance

To the persons who responded to the comments about people who get free health care, the reality is that some still do, but many more get highly subsidized (yes, by the government) retired medical plans including federal employees. The person who thinks $300-400 per month is the total cost of their health care is oblivious of the real costs and who pays them. For the person with 32 years of local government service and paying $1342.00 for a family, I suspect that even you are being partially subsidized, just not as much. When you go on Medicare, you will think you have died and gone to heaven. Part A is free and Part B reflects 25% of your cost with the government picking up the other 75%.

Empty shelves

Maybe the person who does not understand about empty shelves at FISH should talk to someone who regularly volunteers there. FISH shelves need to be restocked just like grocery store shelves where you are fortunate to be able to shop and donate to those less fortunate. Empty shelves at FISH indicate two possible scenarios: great need or inadequate response. Our grocery stores receive tractor trailer loads of stock daily. FISH receives its stock in bags and boxes from many ongoing sources—businesses, churches, clubs and generous individuals. As we enter the Thanksgiving season, let us who are able share our bounty with those less fortunate.

Cable service

How about if we all in James City County and Williamsburg proper call Verizon FIOS at 1-800-VERIZON (1-800-837-4966) or contact them on the internet at https://www.verizon.com/Support/Residential/contact-us/homepage.htm and ask them to service our area with FIOS. Please, let's all do this and maybe they will come.

Generic drugs

A caller commented that generic drugs aren't required to use the same amount of positive medication than their brand name counterparts, but this is totally incorrect. A new medicine must have the same amount of active ingredient as the brand to be approved as a generic by the FDA. Every lot of pharmaceutical product is randomly sampled and tested to show that it contains the correct amount of active ingredient. Also, quoted directly from fda.org: The generic version must deliver the same amount of active ingredients into a patient's bloodstream in the same amount of time as the innovator drug. So, not only does the dosage strength need to be the same, but it must be able to get into your blood as fast as the original product.

Free to you

I have an abundance of adult diapers, the pull-up type and the regular type for free to any organization or anyone that's in need. The sizes are medium and large. Please leave your number in the Last Word, and I will call you. Thank you, and you must pick them up.

State schools

University of Virginia officials have disclosed a strategic investment fund of $2.2 billion which was quietly established and endowed within the past decade and hidden from public view, while the school raised tuition up 74% for in-state tuition for the past seven years. This fund is separate from the school's $6.8 billion endowment. Tuition for Virginia students this fall is $13,000, up from $11,892 the year before. VA lawmakers need to investigate these schools who continue to raise tuition.

Rules of the road

Please, people who are driving too close to me, back off! Please stay two seconds behind my car, as we learned in driver's ed. Thank you.

Sanctuary cities

The mayors that plan on continuing to have their cities be a sanctuary for illegal immigrants should themselves be considered criminals, as they are breaking federal law. Since we will soon have a new president and attorney general, the letter of the law will once again be implemented.

Roadside help

Why did VDOT place an electronic message board on the York River side of the I-64 entrance in Lightfoot and not one on the James River side where most of the traffic is entering off of 199? Was that just an oversight?

Thank you

We weren't driving very long when we noticed something wrong on our car. It was a really loud sound. It really bothered us, so we approached the Shell station on Jamestown Road and pulled in to see that we had a flat tire. I approached an employee named John and told him why we were there. He was very helpful and we thank John for his efficient help.

I would like to thank the wonderful employees at Old Point National Bank for being the perfect "people's" bank. When no other financial establishments would consider our scenario, Old Point — namely Don Buckless and Sherry Thacker — believed in us by giving us financing to build our dream home while our current home is on the market. No other banks would consider this arrangement, but Old Point recognized our good credit history and made it all possible. Also an enormous debt of gratitude to Cheri Green for tolerating our questions and making the process fast and simple. Please spread the word about the trusting and caring staff at Old Point.

Job hunting

I remember in the 60s and 70s, when people didn't have a stable address or a phone number that they could actually give themselves personally to a potential employer. They would ask a friend or relative if they could use their phone number and address. So, there is a way. You know, there's more than one way of doing something. If you know someone that's homeless, who doesn't have a permanent residence, maybe they could use your address or your phone number, and then you would be in touch with them. They would check in. That's how it was done back then. So, I guess we were more creative, you know, about how we did these things.

Financial advice

I'm just curious. Am I the only senior citizen who is retired, who has financial advisers who are threatening and bullying and intimidating and harassing to make massive changes to a current IRA account? I'm just curious. Anybody else out there? Thanks.

Property taxes

There were two comments in the Last Word last week, obviously by people with more gray matter than myself. They were about James City County having excess property, and one suggestion was to allocate it for senior citizens for better housing. But I have another point of context. It's also an advertisement from James City Service Authority, i.e., James City County. The ad was for held surplus property in Toano. I'm willing to bet they don't pay property tax like the civilians do. I would really be interested to know if James City County—like all the other counties in the United States—if they own property, do they pay property tax?

Kingsland

The last thing Lightfoot needs is more traffic and noise. I beg of you, Williamsburg Pottery owners, do not build a several hundred acre theme park in the middle or our neighborhood! I live here because of close conveniences, theme park not included. I also live here because my neighborhood is quiet. And I will fight to keep it that way. Please spare us any more construction, noise and confusion. We are also property owners and we should also be respected. When is the hearing on this subject with the Board of Supervisors, because I plan on being there with bells on? No on Kingsland!

Just read an article that a report concerning the economic feasibility of developing the 700 acres known as Kingsland was finished on Aug. 31. Yet JCC officials interviewed in October say they knew nothing about it. Please start telling the truth about what is going on and what each supervisor's position is on the development. If you insist on clearing green land, at least approve year-round businesses that pay more than minimum wage.

Immigration law

U.S. Code Law 1182, passed in 1952 by a Democratic House and Senate (law used by President Jimmy Carter in 1979), said the President of the United States has authority to bar immigrants from any country, regardless of race or religion, if he believes they represent a threat to the United States. Carter banned Iranians from coming here and used the law to deport several thousand Iranian students (after the hostage taking). When people call Trump a nut-case for saying "No more Muslims until we figure this out," Trump stands on the 1952 law.

Electoral College

If you want your vote to count, the Electoral College is the best way. If it weren't for the Electoral College, New York and California would decide every election. Two states would rule over the other 48.

Post election

I am leaving for Canada for the following reasons: (1) Trump, Giuliani, Sessoms, Gingrich, and Kellyanne; (2) Heather Cordasco won't be in a position to relieve transportation gridlock so families can spend more time together, create jobs, and wear a hard hat in the pictures in all her mailings; and (3) Canada has a much cooler national anthem.

The Secret Service always has code words for each member of the president's family. For Donald, they can call out on the radio "Shaggy Dog" and for Melania, they can use "Playmate."

If the Trump people had rioted against Obama, they would have been called racist. If Hillary had won and they had rioted, they would have been called misogynists. But they can riot against Trump because he is a white male. The right needs to be trained on how to riot. When the Tea party had a "get-together," they left the area cleaner than it was when they got there. If I can live through eight years of Obama, you can live through Trump!

Donald J. Trump was crucified by the media and some of his own party, even ex-presidents. "I do not know him," they said. He was resurrected and is now president-elect, 45th President of the United States! How wrong were they all. I hope and pray that we will support him that he will be a good President and leader for all Americans!

If Trump follows through on his plan to let people wait till after they contract a blood borne virus, leukemia, breast cancer , heart disease, etc., to obtain health insurance, within a few years only people over 65 will have health insurance because there won't be anyone left in business to sell it to the rest of us.

To all those stating that Trump won't be their president: I never considered Obama my president as his policy only hurt America. Still, I put up with him for eight years as he was the elected president. I suggest you get ready to do the same with Trump.

All the postings in Last Word with post-election attacks on Democrats and Clintonites are disconcerting. Mr. Trump tweeted, "We will all come together and be proud!" That will not be possible if his supporters continue to be ungracious winners. A less abrasive attitude will go a long way towards gaining support from Democratic voters. We should also remember that Mr. Trump will be the winner of the Electoral College election, but more people actually voted for Mrs. Clinton. That means that Trump voters are actually in the minority.

What a surprise—during the liberal 60 Minutes interview of President -elect Donald Trump, he was asked to say something to stop the very few incidents of supposedly his supporters harassing Muslims. Why isn't the liberal media saying anything about President Obama and Hillary not coming out against the thousands of illegal protests and especially the rioting in Portland?

With these phony protestors that are bought and paid for and the media coverage right now, you would think that at least half /two-thirds/most of the country is really upset—they don't want anything to do with the Republican Party. So, how many states have Democrat governors and Democrat legislatures? How many? Twenty? Fifteen? No. Four. Only four states have Democrat governors and Democrat legislatures. That's it.

To all the people who say Trump will never be their president: I have not had a president for the last eight years. I'm thankful to have one again. It's now my turn.

Concerning the caller to Wednesday's Last Word who said that she will never support President Trump and he is not my president. Well, here's what President Trump said. He said that he will be your president; he will take care of you. So much for that.

Mr. Schoenbaum's letter to the editor in today's Gazette is on point. When you expect nothing from a President Trump and he delivers nothing, you can't be disappointed.

You just want to laugh when you hear the news saying that the Trump transitional team is in total disarray. What a joke! The new office is about two blocks from the White House. You've got Newt Gingrich there, whose expertise is great; you've got Pence there, whose expertise is great. Everything is rolling along. They want to fool you and they want you to think, "Well, he's never governed before, he doesn't know what he's doing." Here we go.

Yes, I have an excellent suggestion for Al Sharpton. A position as a court jester for the Trump organization. I think, with all his crazy antics, I think he would be perfect for that position.

I am writing in response to the previous post that labeled all young liberals as non-working, non-patriotic, and the children of parents that didn't teach them well. My wife and I fall in the category that you chose to lambaste. We both work over 50 hours a week. I am a special education teacher and she works for a non-profit. Both of us work to make a difference in other people's lives every day. My brother is a veteran, young and liberal. Both of my grandfathers fought for this country and watched their friends die in front of their eyes in two separate wars. My stepfather was a Marine in Vietnam and witnessed the same. All of us, with the exception of my father's father, who received a 21-gun salute from the American Legion at his funeral two years ago, cast our ballots for Hillary Clinton.

Trump is the Republicans' punishment for not working with President Obama.

I read with interest the letter regarding Donald Trump's success in business. I'm sorry, but I don't consider someone who files for bankruptcy five times and who hasn't paid income taxes for 18 years because of a tax loophole to be a successful businessman. Trump University, which he established, is being sued by those who signed on the dotted line. I consider men like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates to be successful. They not only pay their taxes but have given away millions and millions of dollars to charity.

Now that Trump has won the election, is Canada going to build a wall and expect America to pay for it?

I'm willing to follow Monty Python's "Look on the bright side of life" and consider that the next four years Saturday Night Live is going to have an unlimited source for political comedy coming out of the White House.
