Too much noise

Every day I hike Freedom Park with my dog. Lately all I hear is the sound of very nearby construction destroying the serenity of the park. James City County should have bought the land surrounding the park either for expanding the trails or at least as a buffer. Did we really need more McMansions and will those moving in complain about there being too many deer eating their precious plants?

As usual, Busch Gardens out does themselves in decorating for Christmas. Now I wish somebody would take over the volume control and turn it down! When you have to shout to be heard while walking through the park there is definitely a problem. As much as I like to frequent the park during the holidays I'm just not sure I can deal with another day of the assault on my ears. I feel sorry for the employees! They'll be wearing hearing aids by their 50's at the volume level I heard this weekend.

The car wash across the street is running leaf blowers at 11:00 Sunday morning. They were doing it last night at 7:30 pm too. When this place was approved a James City County planner told me we'd never hear them. Boy was he wrong. Trust James City County at your own peril.

Political birds

I have heard it all now. The Republicans are endangering birds per Dan Cristol's recent birding column. If you dare question " Climate Change you are "willfully ignorant" or "shortsighted" per Mr Cristol. What arrogance. Its that extreme "political correctness" that the voters just showed they are so tired of. The author endorses wind energy and wind towers. Do they not endanger birds? Not to mention the additional cost to a homeowner in wind and solar. Just ask many Europeans how "clean energy" has exploded electric bills. And of course, every storm and hurricane is now due to "climate change," as if we never had them years ago. Please keep the politics out of "Birding."

Please, Dan Cristol, keep your politics out of your otherwise helpful bird column. We can argue the "science" of man-made vs. natural climate cycle, but in another venue. Reader, in case you missed it: "Based on the campaign promises, platform and recent track record of the Republican Party, the future has dimmed for many birds."

Castro's passing

The fact that Castro was a murderous thug who, along with his hit-man and fellow murderer, Che Geuvera, killed off his political opponents in order to solidify his power was somehow omitted in the story on his death.

Ninth Amendment

The caller who said we have no rights but the right to the pursuit of happiness needs to read the U. S. Constitution again. We do indeed have all of the rights the caller listed! They are guaranteed to us in the oft-ignored Ninth Amendment, which reads, "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." Yes, this means we all have the right to food, clean air and water, clothing, adequate housing, health care, education, a job or other means of income, abortion without restrictions, marriage to the person(s) of our choosing, and any others we can imagine that are not listed in the previous eight amendments. The Fourteenth Amendment, the Civil Rights Amendment, says that no State shall "deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." Nowhere in the Constitution is it mentioned that we have a right to the pursuit of happiness; that actually comes from the Declaration of Independence, although it does fall under the Ninth Amendment as well. So I advise any caller to the Last Word who wishes to comment on our human and civil rights to keep in mind that the Ninth Amendment grants us all of them.

'Excellent mother'

Did you really look at Barron? The child never had any expression on his face; he looked absolutely blank like he was medicated or traumatized by it all. You might also know that he has an entire floor of his own in the New York residence, and probably his own dedicated staff to take care of him when his excellent mother is entertaining in Palm Beach during the winter social season. I truly don't doubt that she is a good mother — but, really, perhaps some of her reticence in being involved in the campaign says more about her own feelings of insecurity than about her devotion to Barron.

I inherited a Bose home sound system from my sister. When we went to hook it up, we got sound but no picture. I called every company on the Peninsula that sold TV's, the Bose store at Prime Outlets, and all the big box stores. No one could help us. Then we tried Radio Shack on Monticello Avenue. We walked in to find the place buzzing with folks of all ages attending their weekly Saturday morning electronics class. Despite how busy they were, we were quickly assisted by Craig and Chris. They fixed us up with exactly what we needed. In addition to the excellent customer service we received, we were incredibly impressed by the electronics class. One little eight year old was programming a robot! Thanks again, Craig and Chris, for helping us.

Mail delivery

Yes, you can go out in the morning and hope that your mail hasn't been stolen -- especially if it included your bank statement or a check you were expecting. And don't think that doesn't happen here in our area.

Tax proposals

New proposed tax rates reduce the two highest rates on taxable incomes over $400,000. from 39.6% and 35% to 33%. The lowest tax rate increases from 10% to 12%. Guess who benefits from this plan??

Some understanding

The Nov. 19 "Retired in Williamsburg" cartoon read: 1st retiree: The Flat Hat reported that on the day after the election, students were shocked, crying, suffering from major stress, and requesting a test be moved back a day. 2nd retiree: USA Today said that University of Pennsylvania established a safe room for students with puppies and coloring books! Do the old expressions, "Get a grip on yourself" and "Grow up" ring any bells? An alternate response from the 2nd retiree might have been: I get that. Young people are developing a clear sense of right and wrong. They believe privilege and respect are earned. The election of a predator, a racist, and a dishonest businessman is upsetting. I'm stressed and frightened too.

President-elect

Since over the last eight years most Trump supporters denied the legitimacy of the Presidency of Barack Obama I feel I am entitled to deny the title of president to Trump. Considering that he was one of the first birthers and didn't change his tone until the adult on his staff forced him to do it I feel I have the First Amendment right to deny Trump's legitimacy seeing as he lost the popular count by more then 2 million votes.

Most politicians wait till after they are sworn in, but Trump has back pedaled from half of his campaign promises in 14 days. A new national record. Trump will take the term lying politicians into the stratosphere.

Please remember that not supporting the elected person as your President is setting a dangerous precedent. The next time your candidate is elected, it will be fair game to not support your President. This approach will further divide this country to the point that everyone will feel entitled to work against their neighbors instead of together. We need to find common interest to work on together instead of trying to find things that make us different. Me, I don't have a candidate, I just go to vote against someone but will support issues I believe valid, regardless of the person who holds the office.

I don't understand why people are concerned that Trump isn't interested in his daily intelligence briefings. During the campaign he bragged repeatedly that he is smarter than the generals.

To the person who complained about Trump's racist's remarks concerning Muslims and Mexicans, let me educate you. There are three races in the world, Caucasian, Negroid and Mongoloid. Muslims are not a race. They are a religion as are Catholics, Jews and Baptists. Mexican is also not a race, but an ethnicity as is Irish, Polish and Spanish.

Veterans benefits

Tried to use the on-line query system for VA benefits? Don't bother as it still does not work. Tells one to enter usual info; SS #, Service #, VA claim # then rejects all those as duplicates already in the system. One way the VA consistently fails to serve vets is by stonewalling: setting up systems that make the VA perpetually inaccessible. Talk about Catch 22.

Electoral process

For a long time I have felt that the electoral process in this country sucks. I believe that the British system of electing a majority parliament which then selects their leader who then becomes the Prime Minister of the country is superior to our system. In their system you would never see a loose cannon similar to the demagogue we will be stuck with for the next four years.

A polite response to Mr. Lewis D. Williams Jr's Op Ed in the Nov. 22 Gazette. The United States is not a democracy at the national level. We are a democratic republic, fashioned by a voluntary joining of our several states under a Constitution. Part of the give and take in arriving at that Union were several protections of the rights and power of the member states themselves. The electoral college was one. Another was the appointment/election of Senators by the several State legislatures, who could quickly recall and re-appoint replacement Senators if the federal government started acting despotic. Unfortunately, in 1913 Progressives were able to convince the people and the states to destroy this "vertical" "check and balance" put in place by our wise founding fathers, by passing the Seventeenth Amendment to the Constitution. This Amendment replaced the appointment/election of a State's U.S. Senators at the will of State legislatures with election by the voters of each state themselves for cast-in-stone 6 year terms. Had the Seventeenth Amendment not been passed, it is my opinion, Obama Care would never have passed Congress, as many States would have recalled their Senators faster than a black-jack dealer rakes in the chips when the house wins a hand. Please, lets not devolve further from a democratic Federal Republic towards mob rule. Thank you.

I'm no fan of the Electoral College, but given Trump's manifest incompetence, I would suggest in this instance that we make it function as it was designed to, as an independent deliberative body charged to keep buffoons out of America's highest office. Read James Madison on the subject: "... The immediate election [of the President] should be made by men [the Electors chosen by popular vote] most capable of analyzing the qualities adapted to the station, and acting under circumstances favorable to deliberation, and to a judicious combination of all the reasons and inducements which were proper to govern their choice.... The process of election affords a moral certainty, that the office of President will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications. Talents for low intrigue, and the little arts of popularity, may alone suffice to elevate a man to the first honors in a single State; but it will require other talents, and a different kind of merit, to establish him in the esteem and confidence of the whole Union, or of so considerable a portion of it as would be necessary to make him a successful candidate for the distinguished office of President of the United States.
