Last Word on making friends, Dec. 6

Making friends

I live on Country Club Drive off Longhill Road and just recently acquired a rescue dog with a ferocious bark. At 7 p.m. Wednesday night, a UPS delivery person delivered a package and rang the doorbell. Naturally, our dog barked and ran to the door. When I retrieved the package from the front porch, a dog treat was on top of the UPS box. Unfortunately, the driver was pulling away so I was not able to thank them. What a kind and sweet gesture. Thank you so much to our UPS delivery person for such a thoughtful gift.

Redistricting

It was mentioned during the last School Board meeting about redistricting that the “funding partners” needed to be involved in the process. Can someone tell me what a funding partner is and why they need to be involved in what is best for the students?

Does anyone know why the zoning for Jamestown High skips over Jamestown Road areas and goes to Kingsmill area, which is farther away? Maybe we should test to see who should go to which school instead of having it based on location, location, location.

Christmas tree

For 58 years the Kiwanis Club has performed an outstanding service to the community by sponsored the lighting of the Colonial Williamsburg Christmas tree at 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve. But the Gazette recently reported that this year the date has moved to Dec. 21 to accommodate those “having to choose between the tree lighting and other Christmas-related events.” Given the substantial size of the crowd every year, I don’t see how moving the date could improve attendance. And for the first time since moving to Williamsburg, my family will not be attending, as we have a conflicting event: work.

Great work

Congratulations to W&M chemistry associate professor Doug Young and his research students working with unnatural amino acids. The possibilities for more selective treatment of cancers are very exciting. Doesn't W&M have some kind of start-up program that could pull together the next step in the work, as visualized by Dr. Young? If they don't, sounds like they should.

Need a gym

I was wondering why there isn’t a gym at the City of Williamsburg Rec Center. The place has so much potential, yet there’s no gym. I don’t know why we have to go to the James City County Rec Center and pay more as York County residents when we have one just around the corner. I imagine it’s really a matter of purchase, but it’s about time we get something near this side of town, and that is near the City of Williamsburg Rec Center. There’s so much potential and that place is just dead. Thank you.

Sexual harassment

You know, so many of these men are being fired for their sexual misconduct. And Matt Lauer, I heard about today. I’m sorry for him and his family and for the lady that spoke out. We had a man in our midst that talked terrible about women and nothing has happened to him. So I’m sure he is above the law. Thank you.

Parade laws

Every year when the Christmas parade rolls around, we're told Virginia law prohibits handing out items along parade routes. I've searched for this law and never been able to find anything. Can someone point me to it?

New G.I. Bill

The Forever G.I. Bill was just passed into law by the Federal Government. Thank goodness. And signed by President Trump. There are 13 new laws that take effect now and 18 more that take effect in nine months. For example, there’s extra help for education if you’re going into math, science, technology or engineering. Previously, if you were in a school that closed, you lost your benefits. Well, now they are reinstated. If you want more information on this, go to benefitsvagov/gibill or call 1-888-gibill1. There are a lot of benefits in this. And benefits for spouses and children that weren’t there before.

Don’t forget children

Wendy’s is not a place we often go eat, not because we don't like the food, just a little out of the way. How many of you have gone there and actually read what is printed on the drink cups? They have testimonials from adopted children — yes, children, not pets. I know in Williamsburg there are more of you than I can count that are addicted to your furry friends — that is OK. But, have you ever stopped to think how many foster children want a home? We see ads on TV, in magazines and the newspaper about adopting a pet. How often do we see anything about adopting children? What if we became more sensitive to the needs of children; can you do that? Foster children also need Christmas gifts, clothing and items that make them feel we haven't forgotten them. I challenge all of us to start doing our part. Thanks.

Free to you

One Sharp 27-inch TV with remote and one 27-inch Phillips TV with remote. Not flat-screen TVs, but work fine. No problems. Call 259-2449 if interested.

Grocery store

Just what we need, another overpriced grocery store. We will have 12 grocery stores serving our small community with this addition. If this trend continues, grocery stores may outnumber the pancake houses here. I welcome the jobs. Where there is a need, is between here and Newport News; that area is a grocery desert. Residents there have to walk, take a bus or ride bikes to 7-Eleven or Dollar General to purchase groceries.

Looking for …

Does anyone know someone who does calligraphy here or the surrounding areas? I have a small poem my husband wrote for my daughters and me, so not too complicated. Thanks.

I lost a Williamsburg library book in the parking lot at a doctor’s office in McLaws Circle. It is a large print mystery with a slip of paper inside with my name and the due date. If found, could you call me or turn it in at the Williamsburg library? Thank you for your consideration.

Guns

The NRA has no problem with terrorists, escaped convicts or convicted violent felons pulling up to a gun show and loading up a van with weapons and ammo without a background check. The NRA is a threat to my family’s lives.

Living nativity

Liberty Baptist Church of Lanexa is presenting a live Christmas nativity from 6:30-8 p.m. Dec. 6-8 for free. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy this Christmas scene. Thank you.

Tax plans

Well, they did it. Our two congressmen, Taylor and Wittman, both rubber stamped the GOP tax bill in the House. If it and the Senate version eventually become law, older, middle-class people like so many of us in Williamsburg will start paying higher taxes because of reduced or complete loss of deductions for state and local taxes, mortgage interest and medical expenses. And all to support reduced taxes for the very wealthy. Are these two really representing our best interests?

My husband and I met with our financial advisor a few weeks ago. We asked what he thought the new tax plan, whatever it would be, would mean for our portfolio. He said it would probably be good, that if corporate taxes were cut, our investments would increase in value. I said, "Oh, but I thought the tax savings would go into new jobs and higher wages." Yeah, we all had a good laugh about that.

Can anyone explain to me why any of the politicians are concerned over $1.4 trillion on the deficit for the tax cut plan — that’s over 10 years — versus the 8 years that Obama was in the White House, it went from $12 trillion to $20 trillion. So it went up about $1 trillion a year, not over 10 years. What is the big deal? I don’t understand.

A careful math proponent informed readers that the 13 million tax payers whose taxes will increase only amount to 5 percent of the U.S. population, with the obvious implication that those people are too few for the rest of us to worry about. But I worry, especially when considering that these are presumably middle-class tax payers who were promised a cut. In contrast, the wealthy 1 percent are allegedly expected to actually benefit from tax cuts. If the Last Word contributor has such lack of concern for the 5 percent, how does she/he do the math in justifying such preferential treatment to the mere 1 percent?

Why are senators Warner and Kaine voting no on a tax bill letting us keep more of our money? New York Times reports most middle-class households that take the standard deduction now would get a tax cut under the bill and almost none would get a tax increase. Let them know: We the people want to keep our money.

If the president’s tax plan is passed by the Republican Congress and signed into law, the American people will know by the Ides of March whether the president is telling the truth about it or lying.

Someone commented that people shouldn't get hysterical that 13 million people are going to get a tax hike. In six months those that get their little tax cut will forget. The 13 million won't.

The dumbest thing Trump can do is sign the GOP tax cut. After he does, they will have no reason not to impeach him for being mentally unstable.

The rich control the Republican Party. If this tax cut and the dismantling of all the consumer protections don’t prove it, I don’t know what will. I am baffled as to why working people vote for them. The Democrats are labeled tax and spend. Republicans are tax cut for the wealthy and spend. My children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, etc., will be paying for this tax cut. They will have to deal with a hotter and more polluted planet and no way to pay to fix it. All the government income will be used to service the enormous debt the Republicans are going to generate. Tragic.

Store closing

I just read in the Last Word about the closing of Tuesday Morning. This is so shocking and disappointing. It seems like all the individualized stores are closing. We are still grieving the loss of Books a Million. Thank you.

Thank you

To Mitch in the ER and the fabulous ladies in ICU, I want to say thanks for making my three-day stay the best that it could possibly be. You are all amazing professionals and I appreciate all that you did for me. Merry Christmas.

High water

I just want to know why VDOT refuses to fix the standing water issues in the two areas west of Anderson’s Corner on Route 60. And they know which areas they are, because they’ve gone and put signs that say “High Water.” Recently, they’ve been down in front of James City Recycling, cutting the bushes back and taking the bushes out; weeks ago they spent days down there trimming the bushes back. Why won’t they fix the serious safety issue with the water standing on the road? Are they just going to wait for somebody to get killed? I know work orders have been put in by citizens and it’s been reported to the county supervisor, but nothing’s been done. I’d like to know why.

Up in Washington

In 1971 there was a riot at York High School because they picked 12 white cheerleaders when 30 percent of the students were black. Presently, 51 percent of Americans are women and 40 percent of Americans are people of color. Yet 95 percent of the U.S. attorneys Trump has picked are white men. We won't forget at the ballot box next year.

Since Trump has been president, the North Koreans have developed a ballistic missile that can reach the White House, and all Trump can do is tweet childish taunts.

If your bank rips you off for $100, you probably won't go to court. Thanks to the Consumer Protection Agency, $12 billion was retrieved for consumers, making it the most effective agency in Washington.

VP Pence wants to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. It took about seven years to just build a new U.S. consulate in Jerusalem (2003-10). How long will it take to build a new embassy building, which would require higher security, in Jerusalem?

Angels among us

There are angels among us. Have you seen them? They might be standing behind you in the grocery store, post office or theater. They can be a woman, man or even sometimes a child. They can be black or white, rich or poor. Have you seen them? They are people sent to uplift us. Their deeds are simple. They find the lonely and make conversation; they give hugs. They find the less fortunate and give what they can. They are kind; they show compassion; they are thoughtful. Have you seen them? If not, look closer, listen better, take the time and seek them out. Making their company will be one of the best gifts you will receive this holiday season. And should you be so fortunate, so blessed as to not have the need, then join them and be an angel yourself. Merry Christmas.
