Last Word redefines 'over-55' on Dec. 17

Discrepancies abound about the size of the national debt and deficit.

‘Over 55’
There's a re-defined “over 55” community, where any NASCAR wanna-be can drag strip or practice a qualifying run. Drive like you're 16 again, forget the speed limits (i.e, drive over 55), and ignore stop signs, no passing zones and pedestrians, too. And we wonder why tourism is declining.

National debt

The CBO estimates the National Debt will increase to $19.4 Trillion in 2016. Obama has increased the average national debt by $61,000 per U.S. household. The decrease in the deficit referenced was actually from 9.8% in 2009 to 4.2% in 2014. What the previous comment failed to identify was that the deficit growth was 3.1% before Obama took office. The noted deficit reduction cited by Obama was the result of sequestration, not the Obama administration.

Fuel charges

Why are we still being charged a fuel cost, big dollars, on our electric bill?

Unemployment rate

The unemployment rate is 5.6% today - which is a significant decrease from the unemployment rate of 7.8% when Obama took office. That said, let’s add a few more numbers to the mix for consideration. Under Obama today, we have record number of people living below the Federal Poverty level, slightly over 50,000,000; under Obama, the number of single parent households has increased by 3,200,000; we have seen an increase in the number of families on food stamps increase by 45% under Obama and that number has not dropped; we have seen the number of American homeowners drop by 3.2%. Add these numbers to the reduction in unemployment rate should tell you that over 40% of those new jobs were at minimum wage or part-time jobs.

According to National Business Report, only 22% of Americans think the economy will get better and has been getting better. How do you rectify that with the phony 5.9% unemployment figure? You do it by not counting a lot of people who aren’t working.

Yes, to the person that had the accolades to Obama and the 4.9 or whatever unemployment rate:  ’08, when the President went in, there were 77 million people unemployed—not in the labor force. Now, according the Bureau of Labor Statistics, December of this year, or the last quote, it was 94 million, or a difference of 17 million. How do you count these 17 million people that aren’t in the work force any more? Shouldn’t they be included because we’ve lost 17 million people and the middle class is getting smaller because there’s less income since President Obama has gone in. Obamacare is a disaster. People are probably paying $2,500 more versus $2,500 less. You know, let’s count all the statistics, not just the good ones. Thank you.

George Washington

George Washington died Dec. 14, 1799. He was first in war, first in peace, first President of the United States and the only Founding Father to free his slaves. I don’t exactly think that keeping the security of the United States safe would have been something that George Washington was against. He called things exactly what they were. Might make a trip to Mount Vernon and get one of the many, many books that are written on George Washington. I’ve read six and haven’t even scratched the surface. He was very opinionated and very straight forward in his thoughts and actions for the security of the United States.

Trump on Muslims

Once again the liberal media blasted Trump’s position on not allowing any new Muslims to enter our country. Furthermore, the liberal media claims not all Muslims are bad If that is the case, why haven’t we heard any news reports on how “good” Muslims are turning in the bad ones? I’m a Catholic. If I knew a possible terrorist attended my church, I would turn him in to the proper authorities.

Looking for ...

Looking for a tutor who knows trigonometry and physics (11th grade). Any suggestions?

Stryker building

I like the Stryker Building a lot. It’s exciting and elegant and fits in well with its surroundings. It’s about time Williamsburg built something other than a brick box. So, bravo to Stemann Pease for bringing modern architecture into our sleepy town.

Recommended

This message is in response to someone in the Last Word who is looking for a clockmaker. I would like to recommend Robinson Antique Clocks in Carrollton. The company is owned by Richard Robinson. Hours are Wednesday to Saturday, 9:30 to 4 and his number is 757-238-3755. I used Mr. Robinson to move a grandfather clock for me. He did a very good job. He leveled it, cleaned it, serviced it and explained how to use the clock. It works perfectly and I would fully recommend him. Thank you.
