Last Word on domestic violence, Nov. 7

How do those who can't afford health insurance afford to pay fines for not having it.

Domestic violence

Ms. Bridges made an excellent report of the community's domestic abuse problem and of the steps the community as an alliance is taking to help remediate the problem.  One aspect of the domestic abuse problem is not addressed in the article.  My understanding is that 48% of women nationwide delay leaving an abusive situation out of concern for their pet and that 70% of them report that the abuser threatened, injured or killed their pet.  Since 2010, the American Kennel Club's Humane Fund has offered a Women's Shelter Grant Program to qualified domestic abuse shelters and animal shelters which house pets of residents of the domestic abuse shelters.  Information about this grant program may be found at the AKC website at www.akc.org; donations to the fund are always welcome and tax deductible.

Health care

I honestly do not understand this—if there’s someone out there who can explain this, please do so. Under the infamous Obamacare, you are required to have medical coverage. All right. Where does Olde Towne Medical Center come into play, when people go in there and get free medical care? An acquaintance of mine cannot afford medical care, but the government fines her each year, to the tune of $600. If she can’t afford medical care, how can she afford to pay a penalty? Someone please explain.

Quarterpath Road

Thank heaven the wise powers that be know that the only people who really want Quarterpath Road dirt section paved are those who drive 60 miles an hour past the busy recreation center, past the busy playground, past the joggers and bikers and past the families with the strollers so that they can go 70 miles an hour to get to their local grocery store. Thank you.

Helping those in need

There is an organization led by Mrs. Pamela Frazier that serves the Greater Williamsburg Community called, “Erase the Need Center.” They provide an array of services to the under- served population with the greatest need such as: the Back Pack Program that helps support the nutritional needs of students for learning, bread distribution day on Wednesday’s that offers various donated foods from the local community and the ability to personally shop at the center by referral just to name a few. Our community with its leaders should lend their full support to make deserving efforts like these a success.

Great information

I would like to thank the owner and staff of Godspeed Animal Care and St. Francis Pet Resort for the roundtable discussion that they held recently for dog owners to learn about canine influenza.  I attended this event and became educated on the disease and the highly contagious trait of this influenza, and the vaccinations available to avoid the severe sickness (and some deaths have resulted) which the disease causes in canine pets.  I learned about the extremely contagious strains of the disease, the signs of the disease, and the spread of the disease within the US recently.  Dr. Dumont and her staff are to be commended for holding sessions to educate the owners of pets on how to combat sickness of pets especially when vaccines are available. I have appointments for my pet to receive the two-part series of vaccinations for canine influenza, a few weeks apart, for this disease, and urge other canine pet owners to get these vaccinations for their pets.

Constitutional amendment

Is it necessary to have the “amendment" if the "law" has been working since 1947?  Does this amendment hinder the employee from seeking a solution to unfair employer actions?  Ask the Wal-Mart employees or other part timers what has happened to their hours and benefits because of employer actions.  As a several newspaper articles have mentioned, we do not need more regulations as this amendment proposes.   Vote "NO" to the amendment since the law has been working.

Fact checking

Several of your correspondents have claimed that the Clinton Foundation gives only 5% of their funds to charity.  I direct these misguided people to www.charitywatch.com.  They evaluate over 4,000 US charities.  The Clinton Foundation has a 4-star rating—their highest—with over 88% of the funds going annually directly to their charities around the world and none of it goes to the Clinton families.  Don't you just hate fact checkers?
