Guns safety and recommendations in Last Word

Potted plants

We have an excess of potted plants, especially mother-in-law’s tongue and clivia, and would like to give them to a charity or garden club.  Please email wmburger@cox.net if you’re interested in picking them up.

Guns

Responding to the writer who thinks that exercising his constitutional right to carry a gun will keep him safer.  The assumption that if every household owned a gun we would be safer is a fallacy.  Statistics show that a gun in the home is 22 times more likely to be used in a homicide, suicide or accidental shooting, especially by children, rather than for self-defense.  Among 23 developed countries, 80 percent of all firearm deaths occur in the U.S. The NRA, the gun manufacturers and the politicians on their “payroll” have convinced many people that the more we are armed the safer we will be.  It is an illusion and anyone who believes them is being naïve.

Of course if there were fewer guns, fewer people would be shot.  It is common sense just as if there were fewer cars, there would be fewer accidents. And if there were fewer morons in the GOP, the Donald would be last in the polls.  But, there are not going to be fewer guns or cars or ignorant voters.  We are stuck with all of them.  So the least the NRA can do is support background checks and close loopholes for gun purchases.  But, the NRA will never do that because they do not represent sportsmen or gun owners, they only represent gun makers. And they do it very well. Just look at the extremely unpersuasive garbage they spew out here.

If you are in need of a genuinely supportive and caring residential environment for your loved one, please do consider Dominion Village on Longhill Road. My father has been there for several months now, and I have experienced such an outpouring of wonderful, professional and giving assisted living services for him.  The team of administrative staff and direct care staff are positive, personable and great advocates!    Staff is always available and eager to attend to a resident's need or a family member's concerns. The common areas as well as residents' rooms are well maintained. Dining, recreational and social activities are creative and varied. Dominion Village gives residents and their family caretakers assurance that they are safe, loved and respected.

If anyone is looking for a great pedicure, call Bonnie at 757-771-2867. She took care of my feet better than my podiatrist. She is mobile, so she comes to you. She soaked my feet, trimmed my nails, my callus and corns. I felt like I had a new set of feet. You will not regret your experience.

The gift-giver

In reply to “Four corners:” France gave the United States the Statue of Liberty as a gift, and we point her toward France.  If Iran, Iraq, China wanted to give us a statue, we would gladly point it toward them. I think the person who wrote this is the same person who inquired about why we don’t use fireworks during the day or why can’t we see fireworks during the day.

Decision questioned

The recent Arcitectural Review Board decision regarding 721 Lafayette Street is appalling.  Rather than let the owner demolish the current very small (~950 sq. ft.) rundown home and rebuild, the ARB is directing that the current structure be repaired at a cost of ~$200K.  Was the same rationale used to approve the replacement of the wonderful small house on the corner of Henry Street and Newport Avenue with the huge, 3 car garage house currently being built on that property?  As previously stated in the Last Word, Colonial Williamsburg is the 18th century site in Williamsburg, not the rest of the city.

Thank you

Wish to thank all of the many James City Police officers and volunteers who gave of their time to help at the Grove Christian Outreach Center's Back to School Event. The parents appreciated their friendliness and the way they interacted with their children. We want you to know it was greatly appreciated!

Cheers!

Congratulations to the Jamestown Eagles Junior Varsity Volleyball team!  They continued to be undefeated, taking home the gold, at the Endless Summer Volleyball Tournament on Sept. 12!

Does anyone have a working computer, microwave and a cat cage that you can donate?  The computer is for school. If so, please call or text me at 757-603-2281. Thanks!

Waiting, again

Another bike race, another 30 minute road delay.  Does anyone in charge care?
