Williamsburg-area residents wanting to ring in 2018 with a few drinks and ensure a safe ride home will have a few options.

AAA Tidewater is offering a Tipsy Tow service for members and nonmembers alike on New Year’s Eve for the greater Hampton Roads area, including the Williamsburg region.

The service is available until 6 a.m. Jan. 1, with AAA providing free one-way transportation for the car and driver only to the person’s home. AAA says it does not accept reservations for the service.

Taxi services are available in Williamsburg, as well as in James City and York counties.

However, public transportation will not be an option for residents staying out until midnight and beyond, with Williamsburg Area Transport Authority buses running New Year’s Eve on its Sunday schedule from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. WATA buses will not run on New Year’s Day.

Area police will be on the watch for DUI enforcement on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Williamsburg Police spokesman Maj. Greg Riley said in past years that the volume of DUI arrests for the nighttime hours of New Year’s Eve into the early hours of New Year’s Day are not any greater than what city police see in an average weekend — about a handful or less.
