Today in history: 34 years ago John Hinckley Jr. attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan

On March 30, 1981 John Hinckley Jr. shot Predident Ronald Reagan and three others outside a Washington, D.C. hotel.

Also wounded was a Washington police officer, a Secret Service agent and James Brady, Reagan's press secretary. Brady, who went on to become a gun control advocate, died in 2014.

Hinckley was tried, but found not guilty by reason of insanity. He remains at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, but has been granted increasing freedoms, among them lengthy stays at his mother's home in Kingsmill.
