New faces joining W-JCC schools next year

Two principals are the latest new faces to join superintendent Olwen Herron’s administrative team.

On Tuesday, the Williamsburg-James City County School Board approved hiring Phoebus High School principal Mark Hudson to replace Jeffery Carroll at Warhill High School and Charles City High School principal Panagiotis Tsigaridas to replace Amour Mickel at Berkeley Middle School.

“In education, it’s all about growing and gaining new experience,” Hudson said Thursday. “Different schools offer different opportunities.”

Hudson has a bachelor's degree from Howard University and a master's and a doctoral degree in education leadership from Old Dominion University, according to a resume provided by the division. He's been a principal at every level, serving at an elementary school for four years before spending seven years at two middle schools. He joined Phoebus High in 2015.

Herron promoted Carroll to assistant superintendent in May. As of July 1, he will oversee all seven middle and high school principals.

To the north, Tsigaridas has led Charles City High, a consolidated school with grades 7-12, since 2015. He holds a master’s in leadership administration from George Washington University and a bachelor’s from the University of Virginia. From 2008 to 2015 he was an assistant principal at Denbigh High School in Newport News, according to a resume provided by the division.

Mickel, who has led Berkeley for two years, will return to Warhill as an assistant principal — the role she had prior to becoming the principal at Berkeley.

“It’s very fortunate that I am able to go back there,” Mickel said Thursday. “The familiarity was a huge part of it, and just going back to the high school level. I’m really excited about getting back to Warhill and work on the innovation program.”

Mickel asked for the transfer this spring because she lost a close family member earlier in the school year.

“It’s been really difficult to lead the school how I would like to and grieve at the same time,” Mickel said. “Knowing that I couldn’t give 100 percent of what I could give, I decided to take a step back.”

She said she’d like to become a principal again, possible a few years after her son graduates high school in 2018.

Assistant principals are also shuffling around ahead of next year.

Both Jamestown High School assistant principals are leaving the division — Crystal Haskins will be joining Dozier Middle School in Newport News as principal and Jeff Bond is returning to West Virginia for his family, Herron said.

Lafayette assistant principal Howard Townsend is moving to Jamestown to take one of those openings. The other will be filled by Warhill assistant principal Karen Scott, according to board documents.

Mickel is taking Scott’s Warhill spot and on Tuesday the board approved hiring Daniel Miani, an assistant principal at Bishop Catholic Sullivan High School, to replace Townsend at Lafayette.

At the elementary level, Noah Green is moving from school improvement specialist at Warhill to Stonehouse Elementary to replace Jaime Claus as assistant principal. Claus is moving to J. Blaine Blayton Elementary to be a teacher, according to school board documents.

The assistant principals at J. Blaine Blayton, Elizabeth Pell, and Matoaka Elementary, Sandy van Leliveld, are switching places, according to board documents.

The staff changes go into effect July 1.
