WILLIAMSBURG — Tracking down an iPhone taken from a hotel room was a matter of waiting for someone to decide to use it. When it happened, the phone led police straight to the home of a hotel employee.
The phone was reported stolen on Feb. 5, according to Maj. Greg Riley with Williamsburg Police. He said the victim stated the phone went missing from her room in a hotel in the 1800 block of Richmond Road between 9:45 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Feb. 2.
Using the "Find My Phone" app, the victim was was able to locate the phone when it was next powered on, according to Riley.
"It indicated the phone was in the 6000 block of Mooretown Road. That address happened to be the address of an employee of the hotel where they were staying," Riley said.
Police executed a search warrant on the home last Thursday evening with the help of the York Sheriff's Office. Riley noted that during the search information was received that the phone was sold to a business in Newport News. Officers responded and were able to recover the phone, he added.
Craig N. White, 39, was arrested and charged with one count of grand larceny.
