James City police to host firearm safety classes in May and June

Adults can learn about firearm safety at free classes hosted by the James City County Police Department in May and June.

Classes will cover the basics of firearm safety, including storage and concealed carry laws. The classes meet the "proof of handgun competency" requirement needed to get a concealed handgun permit in Virginia, according to a James City County news release.

Participants should leave personal firearms at home, the release states.

Materials and gun locks were purchased for the classes through grants from the National Rifle Association Foundation and Project ChildSafe. Participants will get a certificate of completion after their class, according to the release.

Classes are scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on May 23, May 31, June 15 and June 27 at the Law Enforcement Center at 4600 Opportunity Way.

Participants must register online at signupgenius.com/go/60b0545a9a922a02-jccpd1.
