James City County Police are investigating after a man and his wife were found shot to death at a residence Thursday morning, an official said.
Police were called about 9:30 a.m. Thursday to a home in the 9100 block of Richmond Road by a relative of the couple, according to police spokeswoman Stephanie Williams.
James City County Deputy Chief Stephen Rubino said two people were found dead at the home - a 79-year-old man, James Edward Kite, and a 77-year-old woman, Audrey Lily Boyle.
Investigators believe Kite shot his wife in the kitchen area of the home and then went outside and shot himself in the garage, police said in a news release.
Both were taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond. The investigation continues.
Recent national statistics show that 1,615 women were killed by men in single victim/single offender incidents in 2013, at a rate of 1.09 per 100,000, according to the Violence Policy Center. The center is a non-profit educational organization that conducts research and public education on violence in America.
The study found that nationwide, 94 percent of women killed by men were slain by someone they knew. Of the victims who knew their offenders, 62 percent were wives or other intimate acquaintances of their killers, the study states.
