Police: Shooting victim was visitor to James City apartment complex

A 20-year-old man was injured during a shooting at Lafayette Square Apartments on Monday afternoon.

Officials are not releasing the victim’s name, but believe he was a visitor to the 100 block of Dehaven Court at 12:45 p.m. when the shooting occurred, James City County Police Department Deputy Chief Steve Rubino said.

Police are releasing few details about their investigation, but confirmed a resident’s account of the shooting: the shooter, who was standing at the top of a set of stairs, fired about eight bullets into a group of people standing in outdoor walkway.

The victim, who was shot in the buttocks, and another man ran from the shooter toward the back of the apartment complex.

Bridget Harris, a 49-year-old resident, was taking her neighbor’s son off the bus when the victim ran from behind her apartment and asked her to call 911.

“He said, ‘Mam, can you call 911? I’ve been shot,’” Harris said. “He said he couldn’t feel his leg.”

Harris said could see a bullet hole in the victim’s blue Adidas sweatpants. She gave him a towel to help with the bleeding while they waited for an ambulance to come.

Medics took the victim to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, according to a James City County news release.

Police dug out a bullet that was lodged into a wooden porch beam at the scene.

Investigators also found a handgun at the scene, although they don’t believe it was used in the shooting, the release states.
