Football waiver wire

BY ADAM RONIS

Quarterbacks
Jeff Garcia (Bucs): He won't light it up, but he has a good matchup this week against a struggling Seahawks secondary. He completed 75 percent of his passes for 173 yards and 1 TD last week.

Brad Johnson (Cowboys): The 40-year-old hasn't started since 2006 when he was with the Vikings. He has a good matchup this week against a Rams secondary allowing 250 yards per game. He does have a lot of talent around him. He should only be used in deep leagues.

Matt Ryan (Falcons):He's looked very good for a rookie and just passed for 300 yards against the Bears. He's a decent No. 2 QB, but expect some shaky starts.

Chad Pennington (Dolphins): He passed for 284 yards and 2 TDs on Sunday against the Texans. He'll have a high completion percentage and limit turnovers, but he won't pass for many TDs. He's a bye-week fill-in.

Running backs
Dominic Rhodes (Colts): With Joseph Addai nursing a hamstring injury and Mike Hart injured, Rhodes becomes an important player. He had 73 yards on 25 carries and a TD against the Ravens this past week. If Addai is out this week, Rhodes has a good matchup against the Packers, who are 27th against the run.

Warrick Dunn (Bucs): Dunn unexpectedly got 22 carries this week and gained 115 yards when Earnest Graham was moved to fullback because of injuries. Graham should get the bulk of the carries the rest of the way. Dunn is a decent fill-in for bye weeks, but don't expect big numbers.

Cedric Benson (Bengals):With Chris Perry struggling, Benson could get more carries. Still, I have very little faith in the Bengals' backs. Only pick up in deep leagues.

Kenny Watson (Bengals):Watson could also get more carries. Again, only in deeper leagues.

Ryan Torain (Broncos): He has been out since the preseason with a fractured elbow. He could return in a few weeks and should be picked up in deep leagues if you have a spot on the bench.

Tashard Choice (Cowboys): With Felix Jones out, Choice should get some carries, especially if the Cowboys focus on the run with Tony Romo out. He has a good matchup this week against the Rams.

Wide receivers
Justin Gage (Titans): The 6-4 receiver is expected to return this week. Kerry Collins has a good rapport with him.

Devin Hester (Bears):He's improving as a wide receiver and has caught 11 balls for 153 yards and a TD the last two games.

Kevin Curtis (Eagles): After the Eagles bye this week, Curtis should return from hernia surgery. If he's available, grab him.

Donnie Avery (Rams): He's very fast and is becoming more involved in the offense. he had four catches for 73 yards last week. The Rams face a depleted Cowboys secondary this week.

Antwaan Randle El (Redskins): He had 5 catches for 87 yards last week and is becoming more consistent.

Joey Galloway (Bucs):He could return this week.

Bobby Wade (Vikings):He has 19 catches the last three weeks.

Tight ends
Marcedes Lewis (Jaguars): He has scored in two straight games and is becoming a red zone target. He had 3 catches for 64 yards and a TD Sunday.

Cowboys acquire Roy Williams

BY ADAM RONIS

The Cowboys have acquired wide receiver Roy Williams from the Lions for a first, third and sixth round pick in 2009. The Cowboys will also get the Lions seventh round pick in 2009. Williams turns 27 in December and is a free agent at the end of the season. He has 17 catches for 232 yards and 1 TD this season. Brad Johnson gets another solid option while Tony Romo is out. The Cowboys have a lot of options now, but Terrell Owens and Jason Witten should still be the first options in the passing game. The addition of Williams should help TO as teams can't pay him as much attention with Williams on the other side. Patrick Crayton and Miles Austin lose a lot of value and were inconsistent options anyway.

Shooting guard rankings

BY ADAM RONIS

1. Kobe Bryant (Lakers): Bryant is a top-3 player overall. He helps in every category except blocks. He averaged 28.3 points, 1.8 3-pointers, 6.3 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.8 steals, shot 45.9 percent from the field and 84.8 percent from the free-throw line. His scoring could go down and assists could rise with post threats in Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol. He didn’t get surgery on his injured pinky, but Bryant has paid through pain before, so it’s not a big concern.

2. Dwyane Wade (Heat): He’s one of the toughest guys to decide on when drafting. The talent is not in question, but the injury risk is very high. He did look very good over the summer. It looks like his explosiveness is back. He helps in every category except three-pointers and he gets to the foul line a lot. Just make sure you have a plan if he gets injured. He has played 102 games the last two seasons.

3. Allen Iverson (Nuggets): He has become a better percentage shooter from the field since he arrived in Denver. He averaged 7.1 assists and 2 steals last season. He is 33, but his minutes have yet to decrease.

4. Danny Granger (Pacers): He had a huge second half last season. With Jermaine O’Neal gone, Granger becomes the man for the Pacers. He averaged 19.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.1 3-pointers, 1.2 steals, 1.2 blocks, shot 44.6 percent from the field and 85 percent from the foul line. The Pacers will run an up-tempo offense with T.J. Ford at the point, which should help Granger. He has a lot of potential.

5. Joe Johnson (Hawks): Once Mike Bibby arrived in Atlanta, Johnson’s stats soared. He averaged 21.7 points, 5.8 assists, 4.5 rebounds, more than 2 three’s per game, 1 steal and shot 83 percent from the foul line. He shot 43 percent from the field, but 47.5 percent with Bibby on the team. He’s a stud.

6. Andre Iguodala (76ers): He’s durable and can fill up the stat sheet. The addition of Elton Brand, who will draw a lot of attention in the post, should open things up even more for Iguodala, who averaged 19.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 2.1 steals and 1.2 3-pointers. Only flaw is a 72.1 percentage from the foul line.

7. Vince Carter (Nets): He had surgery on his right ankle, so he should be healthy. With Richard Jefferson and Jason Kidd gone, the offense is his to carry. He averaged 21.3 points, 6 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.3 three-pointers, 1.2 steals and shot 81 percent from the foul line.

8. Paul Pierce (Celtics): It was no surprise that his numbers were down last season as he shared the ball with Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. He averaged 19.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.8 three’s. His shooting percentage went up to 46.4 percent. Pierce is solid all-around.

9. Jason Richardson (Bobcats): His shooting percentages aren’t great, but he’ll score, rebound well for a guard, get steals and hit three’s. He averaged 21.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists, almost 3 three’s per game and 1.4 steals.

10. Kevin Martin (Kings): He will be relied upon to carry the Kings offense. He averaged 23.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists, almost 2 three’s per game, shot 45.6 percent from the field and 86.9 percent from the foul line. He’s really an asset in points, three’s, and shooting percentages.

11. Kevin Durant (Thunder)
12. Mike Dunleavy (Pacers)
13. Michael Redd (Bucks)
14. Brandon Roy (Trail Blazers)
15. Hedo Turkoglu (Magic)
16. Mike Miller (Timberwolves)
17. Ray Allen (Celtics)
18. Tracy McGrady (Rockets)
19. Corey Maggette (Warriors)
20. Luol Deng (Bulls)
21. Josh Howard (Mavericks)
22. Jamal Crawford (Knicks)
23. Randy Foye (Timberwolves)
24. Leandro Barbosa (Suns)
25. Stephen Jackson (Warriors)
26. Ben Gordon (Bulls)
27. John Salmons (Kings)
28. Peja Stojakovic (Hornets)
29. Richard Hamilton (Pistons)
30. Jason Terry (Mavericks)
31. O.J. Mayo (Grizzlies)
32. Anthony Parker (Raptors)
33. J.R. Smith (Nuggets)
34. Ricky Davis (Clippers)
35. Kirk Hinrich (Bulls)
36. Francisco Garcia (Kings)
37. Ronnie Brewer (Jazz)
38. Raja Bell (Suns)
39. Rashad McCants (Timberwolves)
40. Raymond Felton (Bobcats)
41. Manu Ginobli (Spurs) injured
42. Monta Ellis (Warriors) suspended and injured
43. Mickael Pietrus (Magic)
44. DeShawn Stevenson (Wizards)
45. James Posey (Hornets)

Hasselbeck out with bulging disk

BY ADAM RONIS

Matt Hasselbeck will not play in Week 7 because of a bulging disk in his back. He had a bad back in the preseason and then had a knee injury the last few weeks. Seneca Wallace could start against the Buccaneers if his calf is fine. He's not a strong play.

Palmer out for Week 7

BY ADAM RONIS

Carson Palmer will not play against the Steelers this week. The Bengals are being very cautious with Palmer. Ryan Fitzpatrick will start again after a poor performance against the Jets. He has a tough time getting the ball downfield. Downgrade the Bengals receivers.

Cowboys injury news; Romo out

BY ADAM RONIS

The Cowboys suffered more than just a loss yesterday against the Cardinals. Tony Romo broke his pinkie in overtime and could miss four weeks. Brad Johnson will take over at quarterback. The 40-year-old will be asked to manage the offense and not turn the ball over. The passing game will take a hit. Marion Barber will become more of a factor, especially since Felix Jones will also miss 2-4 weeks with a hamstring injury. Tashard Choice will back up Barber. Sam Hurd will miss six weeks with a high ankle sprain. He needs surgery. To make matters worse, punter Mat McBriar will miss 6-8 weeks and possibly the season after fracturing his kicking foot on the final play of the game when the punt was blocked.

Palmer to have elbow examined

BY ADAM RONIS

Carson Palmer will have his elbow examined by Mets doctor David Altchek Monday morning. Palmer hopes that his elbow has improved enough so he could practice this week and faces the Steelers Sunday. Palmer said his elbow is getting better.
