Hildreth's Department Store, 51 Main St.: Grand opening for this store that is still family owned and now carries furniture, housewares, linens for bed and bath, fabric and curtains was Oct. 28, 1842. Back in that day, the store bartered with Shinnecock Indians and sold to sea captains. Later on, it was the haunt of the likes of Gary Cooper, the Gabors and the Rockefellers. Today's customers include Matt Lauer (who stopped in a few weeks ago), Barbara Walters, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jimmy Buffett.
