For the person seeking an audiologist: I highly recommend Dr. Jude Liptak near McLaws Circle at Colonial Hearing in Williamsburg. Both my husband and I have been going to him for four years. He is outstanding. He has an outstanding knowledge of various hearing aids and can find the right one for anyone. Thank you.
Right off of Discovery Park Blvd. in New Town on Casey Street is the most quaint business ever, CakeAlicious. I went in there for the first time for a special birthday cake, and I had the most pleasant experience. The owners were friendly and welcoming, and when I went to pick it up, it was beautifully decorated and absolutely delicious. I will be returning. Give it a try.
My truck is closing in on 300,000 miles and the only place it's ever gone for service is Howard Motor Company on 2nd Street. If you're not taking your vehicle to Jeff, Red, Larry and crew, you're making a mistake.
To the person looking for a reliable mechanic: I recommend Brian at Williamsburg Automotive, 784-2977. He is a wonderful mechanic, honest, and reasonable.
To the person looking for an audiologist: I recently had the pleasure of taking my mother to Dr. Jude Liptak at Colonial Center for Hearing, 229-4004. After years of dealing with another company for hearing aids, Dr. Liptak has been able to provide my mom with a great pair.
Dan's Tree Service -- 757-206-9073 -- recently limbed up, pruned and thinned our trees in Kingsmill and did a superb job. Highly recommended for professional tree service.
Looking for ...
This is in response to the person seeking a housekeeper who's not afraid to clean, bend down or clean wood. Please contact me at 757-887-5010. I'm in dire need of extra work to continue paying for my education and can provide a background check, if needed. Thank you.
Four columns on the new Virginia beer company and yet not one single line on where the place is. Editor's note: the Virginia Beer Company, opening in spring 2016, will be at 401 Second Street.
I am looking for somebody to restore old faded photos. Please call 757-220-3012.
If anyone has seen a black Persian cat, please call 229-1042. During the snow he disappeared, and I think he went to the lot next door and maybe got under a vehicle and was taken off. He would never go off and stay. Please help. I have called everyone I know to help me. Thank you so much.
I moved to Williamsburg 10 years ago, and it took about two years to locate someone in a shop here to cut my hair, that was going to be around for a while. And it just so happens now, that's eight years later, that someone is missing—they left the shop and no one wants to say where they went. So, I'm looking for Becky, who was at Fantastic Sam's over at Route 5 and 199 shopping center. I'd appreciate anyone who has information on how to get in touch with Becky. Please respond to Last Word.
Could someone tell me where I can go to get beginner's bridge lessons? Thank you.
If anybody out there thinks the city should put up another fence around Harriet Tubman Drive, would you write in the Last Word and let me know how interested you are.
I just drove past the new James City County firehouse on Longhill Road. It shows that a large community building can still be attractive. Williamsburg Council and the Architectural Review Board should take a look before another disaster like the Stryker Building happens.
It has now been reported that in 2015 alone there have been over 250 peer-reviewed scientific papers published that contradict the human caused global warming theory. The paper that produced the 97% consensus meme was based on only 67 papers that supported the theory—so as now there is no consensus remaining, 97% or otherwise.
How things work
The correspondent who wrote in this week has numerous errors in his facts. The president is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, not of the citizenry. For us, he is the CEO of the federal government. President Obama did not "ignore Congress" when the Affordable Care Act became law. In order for that to happen, it had to be passed by the House of Representatives, the Senate and then it was submitted to the President for his signature which made it law. Since that time the Republican-controlled House has wasted over 80 votes and who knows how much money trying to cancel Obamacare, knowing full well it would be vetoed if it ever went to the President's desk. Over 20 million Americans now have health care insurance that did not have it before. A financial penalty was written into the law to encourage compliance. I have driven in Virginia since 1967 and I have always had to have car insurance or pay the uninsured motorists fee so this is not a new concept. But remember these are the same folks that shut the government down costing us over $24 billion dollars and accomplished nothing. The sequester was ordered by Congress and they can pass a bill at any time to remove it but they have chosen not to do so. President Obama cannot unilaterally cancel it. In fact, Congress has pretty much decided not to do anything except collect their salaries. Congress always writes into law that they are exempt from it no matter what the law is--call your congressman and ask him why they do that. And while you are on the phone ask him about his fat pension plan and over 250 different medical plans available to congressmen and senators at no expense.
Flying the flag
Why is nobody flying the US flag at half-mast with the death of Justice Scalia? Have we as a nation become so partisan that we can't even be bothered to offer a token of thanks and respect to an associate justice, or is it because people just don't remember their civics lessons?
Note to Jeb
Jeb: Please quit whining about what Trump is saying about your brother. First, it makes you look like a spoiled preppie. And second, and more importantly, so far everything Trump has said about your brother is the truth even though it is at odds with the myth about George W. that the right likes to spin about him.
Get some perspective
I love to read the Last Word. It's like watching Jerry Springer except those people have real problems! You're crying over a $2.99 charge and yet you can afford cable -- must be nice for those of us who have to decide between gas to go to work or lunch to eat. You don't agree with Colonial Williamsburg's Super Bowl ad and tourism is down so you have to pay more for a cup that gets free refills and heaven forbid they play Madonna while people ice skate and ruin the historical atmosphere. And to those of you who couldn't get out of your neighborhoods and shamed VDOT. A big boo to you, too! VDOT works around the clock during snow making sure police, firefighters, ambulances, EMT's and hospital roads are clear for people who have real health emergencies and need to get to work to help other people in trouble. I'm sorry you couldn't get out and get your Big Mac fix for the day. I feel better having my rant and I hope you all put your life into perspective and be grateful for how far we have come that you have the right to cry and whine about such childish things.
A truly great debate
In this season of political campaigns and debates, a particularly interesting political debate took place last Sunday evening at the Kimball Theatre in Williamsburg. This extraordinary debate was between King George III King of England, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The capacity of the Kimball Theatre is only a few hundred but this debate should be seen by millions in this land to remind us all of how and why this country was founded and now the direction that our political leaders are taking us. I wonder just how it would go if we could set up a debate between these three Founding Fathers and all the presidential candidates currently running for the highest office in the land. I have a feeling we would want to dismiss all the current candidates and just start over!
Yes, I, too, have been informed my dental office will no longer be accepting my well known insurance provider. I received a notice in the mail, along with a brochure offering coverage through the dental office. I am very unhappy with this decision, and will be looking for a new dentist in the Williamsburg area.
Count super delegates
Those Democrats who support Bernie Sanders will be outraged to discover that no matter the margin of victory in the primaries, e.g., New Hampshire, over Hillary Clinton, Sanders will not be the Democrat candidate for president in November. The Democratic National Committee has guaranteed Clinton's nomination in advance of the primaries with the insidious device called "super delegates," who have no obligation to support the will of voters. Clinton already has commitments from hundreds more such delegates than does Sanders. This appears to be yet another example of the Democrat deception.
To the person who so adeptly answered the complaints about the poor mail delivery: Maybe you can explain how, on Jan. 25, 2016, we received our Oct. 9, 2015, mail! Also, maybe you have a reason for us consistently receiving our mail one day late and, like today, receiving our Motor Home magazine, cover only. No magazine inside, one day late, bundled with the rest of yesterday's mail. For a change, we received our today's mail today in a separate delivery. Confused? Us too!
When the speed limit was raised on Croaker Road between Rochambeau and Richmond Road, I rejoiced. But it is time to change it back. No one obeys the signs as if there is fear to travel that fast. It creates a danger with traffic. Last, [since] it is such a short distance, the increase in speed made little measurable difference in travel.
For quite awhile I have been puzzling over what was causing the popularity of Trump. Then a couple of days ago I discovered the answer. It was the middle of the day when there was significant turmoil, as usual, going on about the world. I decided to turn on the TV to check the weather report and the current news. I was amazed to see both CNN and Fox News covering a live news conference, not by the President or other leading figures around the world, but by Donald Trump. This news conference lasted for an extraordinary length of time. Trump was receiving the kind of exposure to the public that would have been the envy of all the other presidential candidates and the ultimate irony was that it didn't cause the multi billionaire a penny. If, as is becoming more likely, this man rides all this free publicity to the White House, he will become the first, but probably not the last person to become President solely due to the frenzy of the media. Welcome to the new world.
The writer of the blurb of Feb.17 needs some educating. The second amendment was intended to arm a well regulated militia, not a ragged mob of gun toters. The three-mile-an-hour world of the founders no longer exists. The writer is quick to blame who is the president at the moment. I am sure that did not apply for him in the early 2000's.The Affordable Care Act has problems due to the obstructionist party controlling Congress. Why was Congress exempted from it? Look under Joe Lieberman, the closet Republican from Connecticut. Sold his vote five "terrorists" from Gitmo in a swap for our guys. And your problem is? Secure our borders ? Obama has angered his base by enforcing deportation laws. The writer wants Obama to bring back jobs to the US. The writer had better talk to the Koch Family. A majority of their labor force is foreign. Last but not least the Sequestration fiasco. Republicans wanting to shut down the government if they could not get their way was the reason for the disaster of sequestration. Our nation might have become weaker in an Obama haters eyes. The basic reason was and is obstructionism and stupidity.
