Thank you to Jody Davis for writing a very touching letter on behalf of her daughter Kelsie during this extended illness. Please know that there are many who care more about your situation than about any credit we might have at the store. Kelsie has served the community well, and deserves to have our support and prayers. We stand with you in your positive outlook.
I was looking forward to going to Colonial Williamsburg's new flintlock musket/fowling piece firing range. Then I heard it was $119! So I won't be going. Seems to me they've gone off half-cocked and it makes me wonder if this will be a flash in the pan? That's an awful lot of money for an hour and just a few shots.
WJCC Public Schools would not need to build a fourth middle school if they gave families the choice of attending the public schools or taking $10,000 to use as they want on private schooling. We pay taxes to a school district we do not use. We pay for a private school that we want our children to attend. There would not be a need for new buildings, additional teachers, administrators, custodians etc. with no end in sight. This would be a win/win for everyone.
Favored party redux
The comment "Favored Party" article mentioned above cites that Democrats create debt (like it is only they who do this). Sounds like another uninformed comment. From 1980 till 2008, the national debt was raised by all Republican presidents. Only Bill Clinton had some balanced budgets. It might be wise to note that the article is incorrect.
To say that Republicans create jobs and Democrats create debt is an overly simplistic view of politics. "Minorities" as you call them, (I prefer the term people) vote for a politician that will fight for their views in our government and represent their ideals. The reality is all people would like to have a job that makes them proud. That job has to be fair and make them feel empowered and not indentured. The other reality is all people need help sometimes. You call that help a hand out when it goes to someone else, but call it a subsidy, a benefit or a credit when it goes to you.
To the person wondering why minorities vote Democratic rather than Republican, think about the Republican war on African-Americans, Hispanics (immigrant workers) and women and you will have your answer. I do feel so sorry for those of you who support that clown Trump. What a waste of votes, time and money (his). Also think about immigration, voting rights, a woman's right to choice, etc.
To "Favored party": Your comments are very interesting and very revealing. First, it shows your narrow mindedness and it shows your bigotry. And, if you think about it carefully, you have it wrong. The Republicans do not create jobs. The Democrats create jobs. The Republicans create recession.
The comment that minorities vote for Democrats "for handouts" while Republicans create jobs is not only racist but erroneous. The economy has historically done better under Democratic administrations while the debt has increased under Republicans. Were all Republicans asleep from 2000-2008? I am willing to wager that the writer has signed up for Social Security and Medicare, programs sponsored by Democrats but resisted by Republicans. It is only the ignorance of history, combined with bigotry and greed, that draws people to the right.
Don't miss the current Williamsburg Players' production of "The Front Page." The rapid-fire dialogue and one-liners are impeccably delivered, and the entire cast did a fabulous job, keeping the audience engaged and, at times, howling out loud. The set is wonderful and the sound system (finally) was perfection. This production is among the Players' best ever!
The movie "Spotlight" is one of the finest films that the liberal movie entertainment industry has done in years. The writer of anti-Catholic bias in the Last Word made many valid points. The exposure of other professions who have committed crimes against children continues to be reported daily in the news. The difference is these criminals have been tried and convicted of their crime, as well as a log of their whereabouts so the public will be aware of their presence in their area. The Catholic Church choose to handle the "situation" by sending abusers to another parish or to a retirement home. These abusers were released to have interaction with innocent young people, even though the church knew their history of abuse! Those who have not seen "Spotlight," Do yourself a favor and see it. Not only will this movie raise the level of the enormity of this scandal on the lives of people who so strongly believed in the church, but also the impact of discovery had on a city and lifelong friendships. Remember this is a true story!
In reference to the comment about the movie "Spotlight" being anti-Catholic: I am very glad that the movie highlighted the huge problem with the Catholic Church. It tells a story that for so many years was not to be mentioned. And the child abuse by the priests was not handled correctly, which is what made this issue so much worse. Spotlight is not the only movie in recent years about some ugly parts of the reality in this country. There are plenty. And I hope they continue to make movies about real people and reality. It's not always good. But it has to brought to light in order to be addressed.
I was recently contacted by my home loan company telling me that James City County home property taxes increased by ten percent. When are local officials going to realize that they cannot continue to fleece home owners to cover inept government management? I cannot get our street plowed during snow storms and have a better chance of seeing Big Foot than JCC Police patrolling our neighborhood. Thank you for the tax increase and continued poor JCC services.
If anyone is wondering how did the Chinese became so financially powerful, thank Hilary Clinton who gladly received millions in donations from them during her previous campaign.
Looking for ...
At the last Triangle Center Flea Market, I purchased a four-CD Time Life Gift Set titled "Moments in Time" from a nice couple who were located along the right side wall as you came in. That night I opened the box and took out a CD to listen to and there was not CD in any of the four cases. If you have the CDs at home, please call me at 757-570-6204.
On Wednesday, March 9th, I found a set of keys along the path at the Rec Center. I turned them into the desk at the Rec Center. That's it.
I'm looking for any leftover fabric from sewing projects. I'm a quilter. If you have any you'd like to get rid of, please call 757-784-1242. Thank you.
Does anyone know what's going in the old Ukrop's, off of Mooretown Road? Thank you.
I think I get it now. When women and minorities demand change, they are "motivated," "enthusiastic" and "energized." When white men want change, we are "angry."
To the individuals who complained about polling site procedures: I would suggest that you become an election official to learn why certain procedures have to be done according to election law and see firsthand what goes on behind the scenes before you walk in and cast your ballot. My wife and I are election officials and worked 1 1/2 hours on Monday night and 15 1/2 hours on election Tuesday. Our pay of $100 each comes to $5.88 per hour. That doesn't even count the training and study time, food preparation for fellow workers, and transport to and from locations. We obviously do not do it for the money but as a civic responsibility. It is very gratifying to work with our wonderful James City County residents in such an important endeavor. James City County is in need of more election officials, and I would respectively ask for your help. If you do not agree with the way polling places operate, consider joining us as a poll worker, instead of just complaining.
Why can't Virginia have both parties on the same ballot? Save printing costs, save trees and simplify the voting process.
I agree. Congrats to Donald for exposing the Republican Party for what it really is. Although the popular vote continues to be won by those grounded in reality, we do so wish good meaning Republicans would listen to the sane voices remaining in their leadership.
Last time I checked, the word "team" did not have an "I" in it. My club swimmers swam for Jamestown and enjoyed getting to know their team mates and their coaching staff. As a matter of fact, it was their best experience. If you don't want to go to practice, don't be on the team. AAU players don't get to skip JHS basketball practices so why should swimming be any different? Yet again, another example of the trophy generation and the parents being the problem. I am sure Coach Sandling and the other swimmers would be successful without your swimmer, so stop complaining or let an athlete who appreciates the team take your child's spot.
Help the poor
I believe not all poor people are lazy. Jesus told a rich young ruler to sell all he had and give the money to the poor. Jesus did not say, "Give the money to the poor who are not lazy." Jesus taught his followers not to judge each other. Thank you.
Affordable Care Act
Well, let me see. A friend and I were talking the other day about the Affordable Care Act. Boy, if that isn't a play on words. A local waitress here in the small town of Williamsburg, a single mom, not getting anything from anybody except what she makes at the restaurant, and they're going to fine her $600 because she can't afford the insurance. Now, you tell me that's not a crime in the open public.
I just wanted to mention the great tribute to Nancy Reagan done by ABC News just now. She was a wonderful, dignified and gracious First Lady, and there will never be another First Lady as gracious and loving as she was. She was a great asset to America. She did many honorable deeds during her life, and she shall be remembered fondly. God bless Nancy Reagan, and God bless America.
I wish to thank a woman who paid for my groceries at Trader Joe's on March 2. She was behind me at the check-out. Unknown to me, my credit card was invalid and I left to retrieve another card. I came back to find she had paid for my groceries and departed the store. Not being able to thank her for her generous gift, I am thanking her now. I will definitely "pay it forward." Thank you.
Phone scam. On a recent Saturday afternoon a caller said, "Either hit 2 to disconnect or 1 to lower your credit card interest." I hit 1, that came on: "Which of your credit cards do you want to lower your interest on, Visa or MasterCard?" I said, "Well, you have the number. You tell me." And he immediately hung up. Another phone scam. Don't give your credit card number over the phone [to anyone] who called you.
