Last Word on compromise, April 2

The Virginia Gazette
Reader has grown weary of complaints from Last Word contributors.

The genius of our country's form of government is that people with differing views gather to discuss problems with the goal of finding a solution that's best for the needs of the country. The ability to compromise is "compromised" when we sink to name-calling

Presidential politics

Let's see. Trump doesn't like women who are ugly (Carly Fiorina, Heidi Cruz). He doesn't like women who are too outspoken (Megyn Kelly). He doesn't like women who take too long to go to the bathroom (Hillary Clinton(. Ladies, I'm sorry. If you fit in any of these categories, there is no room for you in the Trump Party.

Once again those who propose Bill Clinton could do no wrong are wrong about federal deficits. Yes, there were surpluses from 1998 to 2001. But these were not because of action by Clinton. He was an uninterested bystander. The surpluses were driven by the much maligned Newt Gingrich who insisted on a balanced budget. Clinton had to submit five budgets before one was acceptable to the Republican Congress, resulting in the surpluses. Too bad that the following Republican leadership in Congress was not willing to build on that success, leaving us now 19 plus trillion dollars in debt and building.

Donald Trump's series of foreign wives are living proof that there are some jobs that all Americans refuse to do.

We had Everything Audio Video put a TV over our fireplace.. They did a great job from start to finish. They came by our house to look at the project and gave a free estimate. We found their prices very reasonable. Professional and clean is what I would describe the install to be. The sound system they put in is amazing. The remote they integrated makes the system so easy to use. I would highly recommend this company to anyone needing audio video professionals. The owner/operator Fernando can be reached at 757-941-8400.

The woman who wants to buy a used Trek bike should go to Replay Sports at 2229 Richmond Road. The store accepts all kinds of used sports equipment on consignment. All items must be in either good or excellent condition. My sister and I recently brought our Trek bikes there (with the owner's manuals) to sell. Both adult's and children's bikes are available at the store. Phone 345-5334. My thanks to BikeBeat for recommending Replay Sports!

The Lafayette Lacrosse Club would like to thank Moe's Southwest Grill on Monticello Avenue for a wonderful Spirit Night. Our lacrosse players and families enjoyed all of the food and were excited and proud to learn about Moe's alumni LHS lacrosse player. We think Moe's knows all about "Rippin' the Duck" and are grateful for warm hospitality and local generosity.

I was thrilled with the great service at the new Mr. Bubbles laundromat on Merrimac Trail . I dropped off my slipcovers to be washed and was greeted by Leroy the manager in a friendly and helpful manner. When I picked up my slipcovers the next day, I was amazed that they were stain-free and folded perfectly! All done with a smile and a great price. Who could ask for more?

We have a clothes dryer that is only a little over two years old and it stopped working and displayed a code indicating the vent needed cleaning. We have seen warnings from the Fire Department about the danger of dryer vent fire, and had it cleaned even though we did not expect to do so after such a short time. We called Mark Sanderson of Keep Kleen Dryer Vent Cleaning, 757-707-0803, and he came the next day. He and his assistant did a great job for us, their price was reasonable, and we are happy to recommend them.

Enough already

Please, WBACH, enough already with the "Save Thirty" ads! I almost broke a toe this morning trying to get to the off button on my kitchen radio before yet again having to hear the man dream aloud over a Lamborghini Gallardo or the woman simpering over buying a two-bedroom house off Richmond Road.

Free to you

We have two mahogany chaise lounges with plastic covers free to anyone willing to pick them up. Call 757-258-2701 during working hours.

Enough complaining

I've grown tired of all the Last Word complainers. It always starts with…..why doesn't somebody do something about yada yada yada? I wonder why they don't do something about it, call whoever you're complaining about, or their actions, do it yourself, or are you too good to do it? The other is all the whining that politicians work for you -- run for office then, do it better, show us how it is done! We live in a great community. If you don't think so, leave.

No littering?

Now that a speed bump sign is posted on Merrimac Trail, what about a no littering sign with a high price fine for doing so? The place looks like a dump. There is garbage all along the street, and construction items were left behind. Who is responsible for this mess? Hubbard Lane residents, please keep that street clean!

Well done!

At about 2:30 in the afternoon on Wednesday March 23, our granddaughter was involved in an accident on Barlow Road. Her truck rolled three times and when it came to rest, she crawled out of the wreckage where the people who live in the neighborhood came to her aid. One good Samaritan even drove to her home to notify her family. The paramedics who arrived on the scene were extremely kind and helpful. She escaped with minor scrapes and bruises, but this event cannot go without our expression of gratitude to the wonderful people who were so willing to help a stranger. Thank you.

I was so delighted and surprised when I pulled up to the drive-through window of the Starbucks near Lowe's to learn that the car ahead of me had purchased my order. If you are reading this, then a hearty thank you! I will definitely pay it forward and do the same for someone else.

Berkeley High School Theatre has done it again!! Oh, did I say high school? I meant to say middle school, although you couldn't tell the difference! Their rendition of "Lion King" was absolutely dazzling to behold. How director Linda Gallant is able to draw the talent out of those children is nothing short of amazing! Bravo to the cast and crew that performed such a spectacle!

I was stranded at the Farm Fresh in Norge Friday afternoon with a dead car battery. Patrick, one of their employees, offered to give me a jump to get the car started. I offered to pay him for his assistance but he refused the money and drove off after getting me started. It really is refreshing to see someone who cares about their customers even when they are not on the clock. I hope Farm Fresh knows how lucky they are to have employees like that.

I would like to take a minute to thank the amazing people that were able to call me with some of their fabric they wanted to get rid of. I have plenty of fabric to quilt with now. Thank you all so much.

I was in a serious accident on 3/17, Thursday morning on Capitol Landing Road. Thanks to the City of Williamsburg EMT's and Police for the fast and excellent response. Most notably, thanks to Sgt. Kim Baranski, who kept me calm, informed and optimistic during my long ordeal. I am very grateful to all.

The Dance Performance at PBK was terrific! We enjoyed the dances, music, lighting tremendously! We also thought the costumes were perfect and designed to enhance each of the dances but no name was listed for costumes. And even the hairdos were distinctive to each dance, adding to the beauty and totality of movement. Please let us know who to congratulate on those parts of an outstanding event.

Supreme Court

Every U.S. Senator who has an attorney's license who says the people should get a say in the Supreme Court nominating process should have their attorney's license revoked. They are knowingly and with malice misrepresenting the Constitution that they swore an oath to uphold. The Constitution is clear that people do not get to vote on any Federal Court justices. They are nominated by the President and approved or disapproved by the Senate. Those without a law degree and who are also spreading the same misinformation should have their college and high school diplomas revoked.

War powers

The U.S. Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war. Over 75 years ago, Congress declared war against three enemies: Germany, Italy, and Japan. Now Congress should declare war against three enemies of the western world: Al Queda, the Islamic State, and the Muslim Brotherhood. Or, are we just a nation of sheep being led to the slaughter?

About Rawls Byrd

False information concerning Rawls Byrd is being repeated over and over. He did not resign when the schools were integrated. He retired. He was no young man, and he may not have wanted to deal with the problems associated with integration. Check the facts. There should be an article in The Virginia Gazette archives on his retirement. He was an unassuming man and he really would not have wanted a school named for him in the first place.

Flag protocol

Once again I am compelled to point out that American flag etiquette requires the American flag to be flown by itself when flying at half staff. No state flags and especially no gated community advertising flags. Don't disrespect the flag.

Misleading solicitation

I received a mail solicitation for the "2016 Williamsburg Area Appeal for The Hospice Support Fund" (A Program of The New Hope Foundation, Inc) out of Merrifield, VA. I have been a 15-year supporter of our local Hospice House & Support Care of Williamsburg and found the fund drive I received in the mail confusing. I did an internet search and found the "Hospice Support Fund Legal Disclosure." It read, "The services of a paid professional fundraiser are used to professionally assist HSF in the solicitation of funds. In the last fiscal year The Hospice Support Fund raised a total of $1,521,951. Its expense distribution was 69.39% on fundraising, 10.22% on administration, 5.93% on program services, and 14.46% on public education in conjunction with fundraising appeals." Be aware if you receive this fund drive mailer. It is not helping or providing funds to our local Hospice House, an incredible asset supported by donors and volunteers within our own community.

City budget

In reading your informative article on the Williamsburg municipal budget, I became curious about no mention of a Capital Improvements Project for the city's share of the new 4th middle school on the James Blair site. How much will Williamsburg contribute to the building of the school? I note city children make up 8.44% of the students. Will the city be paying 8.44% of the total $61M estimated building cost of the new middle school, or are they contractually obligated to pay 9.46%, or something else entirely?

States' rights

This is for the person upset that states seem to be breaking the Constitution by have their own gun laws. There are gun laws that are independent of existing federal laws. The 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states, "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

Neighborly help

To the person complaining about unkempt neighborhoods: Take some initiative! Contact your elderly neighbors and offer your help. Most elderly folks feel like a nuisance when they ask for help. Let them know you care and offer your kindness.

Just wondering

Why is chocolate so much better in England and the UK than the ones they make (by the same companies) in the USA?

Looking for ...

A cell phone was found in the parking lot of the Walmart Marketplace off Monticello, on Saturday, 26 March at 11:15 am. It was lost between 10:30 and 11:15. The last photo was of an infant. It was turned in to the customer service desk inside.

For the person looking for a great dance school in Williamsburg for their three year old, I heartily recommend The Institute for Dance on Ironbound Road. My daughter started there at 2 ½ and is still dancing there at 16 years old. The younger classes are focused on cooperation and fun and they introduce more technique as they get older. Their number is 229 -1717 and you can call for more information and class schedule.

My sister was involved in an accident on March 17, in the afternoon. It occurred at the corner of New Town Avenue and Monticello Avenue near the post office entrance. A Honda Accord and a Jeep Laredo were involved. If you saw the accident, please call 757-912-7703. Thank you!

To the shrinking person in need of a tailor: The very capable lady at Berkeley Cleaners in Colony Square, Jamestown Road, does all alterations reasonably. I use her.

To the person who mentioned they were old and shrinking and needing pants hemmed, I might be able to help you out. Email me and mention the Last Word, and let's see what we can work out.

I need some boxes, medium-size boxes. If someone has some to get rid of, give me a call at 229-5248. Thank you.

I am looking for someone who can remove the black stains off of the roof of your house. If you have any recommendations, I would appreciate it if you could leave their name and number in the Last Word. Thank you.

Now that the Italian club CIAO has disbanded, does anyone know of any other Italian group?

I'm looking for someone who reupholsters chairs and sofas, and possibly even makes slip covers. If I could get any suggestions, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Regarding the hummer feeders: I have learned over the years to put the feeders out on April 1st. The first hummer arrived on April 4th last year. I don't fill the feeders full, just one quarter to a half, and clean and refill every couple of days. Last year, I could hardly keep the feeders with syrup as there were so many happy hummers. Hope they and their offspring return. Such a delight to watch.

In reference to the person who wrote in who wants to know when to put the hummingbird feeder up: I always put mine up about the 15th of April. They're usually going through at the time. I do not see my regular ones until sometime in May.
