Questions on schools
Remember all the talk about the socioeconomic balance touted during redistricting by WJCC schools? How about the recent talk by Dr. Constantino that the need for redistricting will become unnecessary due to the balance between schools? If that's so, how does Dr. Constantino explain the disparity between schools, using percent of students receiving subsidized school lunches as an indicator? Berkeley Middle School 44%, Hornsby Middle School 17%, Lafayette HS 31%, Jamestown HS 17%. WJCC is quietly segregating schools, with no debate, no public input. According to a local real estate agent, the best home resale areas include the Matoaka Elementary, Hornsby Middle, and Jamestown HS zones. Facts don't lie; the new school board members need to start asking questions.
I have seven cats (don't ask). Every time I fed them salmon, two of the seven would have projectile vomiting or refuse to eat. I eliminated salmon from their diet (both dry and wet food) and now I rarely have an incident of someone refusing to eat or being sick (except for an occasional hairball). Since salmon is abundant and cheap, they stick it in lots of cat food. My friend's cat developed pancreatitis from eating leftover salmon from her plate. We can't be the only ones having this problem. If your cat is ill, try eliminating salmon from their diet.
Does anyone know why VDOT's several thousand dollar traffic sign on the overpass going 199E approaching I64 E/W, MM 242, does not advise when traffic is backed up on 64?
The proposed Wegmans grocery store for Newport News has cleared the first hurdle to build a store on Jefferson Avenue. The company also plans an additional store on the Southside. There are 13 grocery stores in the area of the proposed new store. Some truly need to be replaced with a modern, up-to-date store. Let's keep our fingers crossed that Wegmans will be permitted to go forward with its plans for this store. It will be a much-needed, refreshing choice to grocery shopping on the Peninsula.
Not quite right
I was called by a stylist stating that the Fantastic Sam's in Williamsburg Crossing was closing and they had moved. I was very unhappy to hear that. I drove by there the other day, and they are open for business as always. I was being misled by an old stylist who walked out of this location. I have been coming to this salon almost 10 years and am sorry to see the staff leave. But the new staff in the salon is very good and very friendly. Just letting people know.
Looking for ...
Is there an agency or business locally that will analyze soil with a quick turn around? To go through JCC/Va. Tech takes much too long for my needs. Thanks for any assistance.
Does anyone have a recommendation for someone, within reasonable driving distance, who could do delicate repairs on fine antique furniture?
I've noticed photos of Antique Adventures members in the Gazette numerous times. How does someone join this group?
I'm looking for suggestions for a nice restaurant in Williamsburg offering a Mother's Day brunch.
Does anyone know how to install or set-up the amazon fire stick for TV selections?
Thank you to the person who turned in my purple earring to the lost and found at the Regal Theatre. Unfortunately, after emptying three boxes of items found there, the earring was not found. I spoke to the manager and am offering a reward as it is part of a set that is dear to me. I have the matching ring. Again, thank you; at least I know where it was lost.
I decided to try Papa Murphy's take home and bake pizza last night. All I can say is OMG it's was wonderful! I will definitely be a returning customer.
For the person looking for a great vet in the Toano area, check out Dr. Sparkman at Noah's Ark on Rte. 60. He takes care of our cat and puppy and is great! Very nice facilities and nice people.
This is an answer to "looking for a loving vet." It may be a little farther to go, but Sam Banks in West Point at Tri-County Animal Hospital cares about animals and not the almighty dollar. He's worth every mile I go to see him from Williamsburg, and if you need him in the middle of the night, he's there for you, too. Thank you.
To the person looking for a good, reliable veterinarian: I would recommend Noah's Ark Veterinary Hospital on Richmond Road. We have been with them for the last 20 years and they have helped and serviced with three of our beloved pets. They are always courteous, kind and quick to have appointments. Our beloved Maltese thinks the world of all the staff and all the ladies there as well as the two doctors, Dr. Sprenkel and Dr. Sparkman. They are all great. Thank you.
For the person looking for a veterinary practice in the Toano area: I think you would be very, very happy with Dr. Averitt at the Toano Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Averitt and her staff are not only knowledgeable and competent, they are caring and patient with both patients and their owners. As an added benefit, their groomer, Kelley, is excellent and reasonable. The phone number is (757) 566-1100.
Not everyone feels that the political cartoons knocking Trump are offensive. I for one enjoy when a cartoonist finds things which are funny in reference to that buffoon.
I am now convinced that most Republicans believe the worse Republican is always better than the best Democrat. Thank God Trump is a Republican. Can you imagine the deafening disdain if he were Democrat.
What is it about President Obama that makes some Last Word callers lose every bit of sense they ought to have? One wanted him to drop a historic foreign policy breakthrough to fly to Belgium and do - what? Another wants him impeached and replaced with a Republican president. Senators claim they can't even confirm a Supreme Court justice nominated by the popularly elected President. Now this person wants not just Barack Obama but Vice President Joe Biden removed from office to be replaced by Paul Ryan, the bottom half of the slate that was defeated in the 2012 election. What are they thinking?
Congratulations to all the wonderful people responsible for another outstanding opera here in our own city. "La Cenerentola" was absolutely adorable. All the player- singers were such characters. And the music, musicians on stage melded so well with the busy stage action. The singers were from all over the world. here for us to enjoy. I am looking forward to the next performance, "The Barber of Seville," on Oct. 21 and 23. The pre- event activities are worthwhile as well.
Free speech rights
The Attorney General of Virginia has joined with other state AGs to use the power of the state and taxpayers' money to intimidate free debate about man-made global climate change, formerly known as "global warming." This assault on free speech and free expression of ideas is abominable and everyone of every political stripe should demand they stop. This bullying by abusive Democrat AGs shows a terrible lack of understanding of the free speech rights established by our founders, and is especially disgraceful here in Virginia.
