Thousands of people attended the festivities in Colonial Williamsburg over the July 4th weekend culminating in the fireworks (with extra viewers from the Yorktown area - those fireworks canceled). I saw not one speck of trash in CW on Tuesday morning, the 5th at 9:00 am. The streets were sparkling! Many thanks to the CW Cleanup Crew. Incredible job.
Now, let me get this straight. They're going to build all these condos and whatever back there behind Food Lion, off of 199—off of Route 5. One question for James City County: Where in the world are the people going to get to it—how are they going to get out of it?
Once again, 64 eastbound is jammed up as far as the eye can see. At the absolute minimum, VDOT could at least close the on ramps with those hurricane gates they've got
To the person offended by the rainbow colored buddy bench at a local elementary school: Rainbows have been around since before Noah built the ark. It is also part of the science curriculum and students learn how rainbows are created as well as what the colors of the rainbow are. It has zero to do with the LGBT flag which was created in 1978 by Gilbert Baker. Furthermore, what does religion and being LGBT have to do with the other? Are you implying that LGBT people are not Christians? "Judge not that ye not be judged."
In regards to answering emails, I contacted Senator Warner and Senator Kaine's offices on several bills over the time that they have been in, and their response to me is they do not give a written response when you question their voting record on bills or any other issues. There are too many Virginians to waste their time doing that; they don't have the time. That was their quote. On the other hand, Robb Wittman has sent us—we had to do a count—30 letters explaining positions on bills in great detail that are extremely polite.
Speaking of replies from our elected office holders: I did get a reply from Senator Warner in April about Medicare waste, fraud and abuse. If you recall, $700 million was taken from Medicare and used to help fund Obamacare. He said, after a large amount of boiler plate, we actually only saved $10 million. In my book, that's not a very good outcome, but at least he was honest and I did get a reply. I kept the reply. Good thing, apparently it's a rare document. I am afraid to ask for an update. I suspect the news will not be good.
A word to the wise is sufficient regarding long-term health insurance. You pay a premium for many years, only not to receive help when you need it. Instead, invest the money to work for you so that it's available when you need it.
Shame on James City County for ruining the Jamestown beach. Why do anything to change what was not necessary and charging for entrance to the local public that has supported it for many years? The entrance and parking are too far from the beach, thus making it a very long walk.
Looking for …
My husband wants to sell his baseball card collection. Does anyone know who buys baseball card collections in the Williamsburg area?
Does anyone know where I can get a wall clock—30-day wall clock—with a pendulum that needs to be cleaned? Call 564-8001. Thank you.
We are looking for a business in this area that sells medical equipment such as walkers and wheelchairs and, if possible, submits to Medicare. I know we can buy them at Williamsburg Drug or one of the pharmacies, but we need extra wide products and I'm not sure they have them in stock. Please leave a message here in the Last Word. Thank you for any help you can give us.
I have a pretty good selection of European and Middle Eastern adapter plugs that are just taking space in my garage. Seems a shame to toss. Any ideas who might benefit from my donation of these? Couple transformers and owner strips too! Two prong and three prong.
In a recent Last Word, someone wanted to know if anyone in the area collects old license plates or old postal cards. I collect, buy and sell old postcards as a hobby. You may contact me (John ) at 757-634-1706 or email@example.com.
Once again, shame on the people leaving the nasty messages about the woman having problems with a sweating glassware. All you have to do is invest in some insulating glassware, such as Tervis tumblers. And you can find a nice selection of those at your Hallmark store and also at Bed, Bath & Beyond and then you won't have a problem with a sweating glassware.
Free to you
Free to good home: Trampoline in good condition. You must pick up. Call 757-645-5264. First call accepted.
When you register to vote in the Commonwealth of Virginia, you are not registered to a particular party. There is no party registration according to the voter registration laws of this Commonwealth.
When is the new Harris Teeter slated to open? And also, what other shops are coming to Lightfoot Marketplace? Editor's note: Harris Teeter is scheduled to open July 13. No word yet on the other stories.
We noticed that the Williamsburg Post Office parking lot lights are still on throughout the day and night. Why can't the manager take action to cut them off during the day and stop wasting the taxpayers' money. We have called the office without having success. What should be our next step?
It is so impressive to read (Gazette July 2) of the student leadership program held here for high school students from across Virginia. What a great idea from one of the Board of Visitors members, Karen Schultz. What a remarkable and important experience for the students. We hope the program will be expanded and continued! Actually, we wish the activities could be part of every students' work and learning in high school.
A survey among Democrats shows that they don't care whether Hillary is under indictment while she's running for president. They don't care. I have a question. Would you care if a Republican was under indictment if you are a Democrat?
Blaming George Bush. I believe he's responsible for those floods in Texas. He may also have had something to do with the floods and the fires in California and ....
I have Cherokee blood running through my veins, and I think that it's pretty bad when you got somebody that's running for president calling somebody "Pocahontas." You had a big ruckus about changing the name of the Washington Redskins because they thought it was racist, and I think that Pocahontas would be a racist name to be using toward another political candidate. I sure think that people with Indian blood running through their veins should stand up and stop this kind of activity in the political arena.
How much taxpayer money is being used by the Hillary Clinton campaign when Barack Obama travels and supports her candidacy?
According to the inestimable Washington Post, a Pew research study indicated that Asians earn the most money among men in the United States. Perhaps we should tell Obama so he can pass a law requiring others to be paid the same as the Asians. On second thought, there are probably not many votes to be had.
If Trump is elected President, the first thing he should do is fire all those incompetent people that Obama put into office, starting with the Justice Department. All Trump has to do is look at the resumes of those people that Obama appointed. It will be obvious that they weren't qualified for the job given to them.
If you were the CEO of a large company and wanted to secure your clients' financial or other information , the last person you would hire to secure it would be some guy in the basement of the State Department. There would be no reason for Hillary to pay an outside contractor to set up her server unless she thought it would be more secure not less. Obama would not have endorsed her and campaigned with her if she had not already explained that to him. The reason she is in trouble is she doesn't want to embarrass her former employees by saying the obvious that she didn't trust them to set up a secure server.
It's apparent that the Democrats don't fully understand the implications of substantially increasing the minimum wage. The first action that would be taken is for businesses to reduce staffing, that would directly lead to higher unemployment of those who were to be the intended benefactor of the higher wage. The second action would be to raise the costs of goods and services, again the poor would feel this action more as they frequent those businesses that cater to them.
Threatening phone calls. Once again, I have received numerous calls that the IRS is going to take me to court if I don't call their toll-free number and make arrangements to pay. Why haven't these people been caught and prosecuted? I've always paid my taxes. Please go find them. Thank you.
Hold the hugs
I am a young waitress in a local breakfast/lunch restaurant. We all appreciate our customers—some are like family. However, we do not appreciate the sudden intimate hugging and squeezing from male customers. We smile, we wait on you. You pay your bill and leave a tip. That tip does not buy you physical affection. Please stop. We need our jobs. I witnessed this again last week when one of our older lady customers who was at the door was suddenly joined by an older man who was loud and then grabbed his waitress inappropriately. The older lady looked mortified.
Why is there only one page of the Last Word in Saturday, July 2? This is the first thing I look for when I pick up my Gazette, is the Last Word. Very disappointed that Saturday seems to be down to one page now, like Wednesday. Thank you. Editor's note: Thanks for noticing the temporary change. We found ourselves in the unusual situation of not having enough Last Word comments to fill two pages for Saturday, so we went to one page; credit the long holiday weekend. We expect things to be back to normal this week.
Congrats to the WYBL All-Stars. I noticed a confusing statement by one of the coaches. How can an All-Star team be together for more than one year? Are not All-Stars chosen for the work during the baseball season? Or is the league just choosing their All-Stars based on their Revolution travel teams? Sounds like politics as usual. What say you, WYBL?
A recent Daily Press article quoted local William and Mary basketball coach Tony Shaver's wish list for $125 million for a new basketball arena and practice complex. Shaka Smart showed how to earn it by building and coaching a winning team. He didn't rely and confer with his assistant coaches each time out. Smart, not his assistants, coached his team to the NCAA tournament. Shaver needs to earn it first, then wish it. Thank you.
Neighbor to neighbor
To the committed couple in the neighborhood who wants everyone to get together once a month because other neighborhoods do it. Why don't you move to one of those neighborhoods and let the rest of us socialize with whom we choose and whose company we enjoy.
We, too, took a TV to Best buy. I was charged $25.00 to get rid of it. Good Will would not take it at all. It was a working large flat screen, the heavy one.
Merrimac Trail continues to be a dumpy road. A big fine for littering needs to be posted . I see no trespassing signs. Who owns those woods along the road, anyway?
VBS thank you
Thankful for the five or so churches these past two weeks who have hosted children for Vacation Bible School. It was great for the kids, families and the community. Volunteers ranged from pre teen to senior citizen. One church had snacks with themes. Different colored fruits represented the rainbow from Noah's Ark. Banana and chocolate chip eyes represented Jonah and the whale. Blue jello and goldfish and pretzels that looked like nets represented Peter fishing. Very creative!
