The correct number
The correct number for Keep Kleen Dryer Vent Cleaning, which was highly recommended in the Last Word, is 757-707-0803, not 757-707-0308. The lady at the 0308 number keeps getting calls from people who want this service, and the business owner is losing business. The original Last Word item was printed May 4, 2016, and we have corrected it, but the wrong calls continue.
When it comes veterans' affairs, I am a Vietnam veteran, a proud Vietnam veteran who has served for 25 years and retired. My son is a proud veteran who has served for 20 years. And we thank God for the Obama Administration. It gets an A+ from us.
I am here visiting my 97-year-old mother, Mary Humelsine, and saw the letter from Wilford Kale about the Humelsine Parkway. We would like to thank him for his wonderful comments. Thanks to the foresight of my father and then Governor Holton, the parkway became reality and Williamsburg citizens don't have impossible traffic issues today. My mother also served this community for years on the hospital board, Community Trust Board and City of Williamsburg Anniversary Board and numerous other committees too numerous to mention. I feel it's not inappropriate to have a highway named Humelsine after these people who served their community well.
This is for the Williamsburg/James City County schools. I'm requesting a selection process for the next superintendent to be more open to the public. Thank you.
WJCC schools has a new superintendent coming in and we would like the selection process to be more open to the public. Thank you.
I attended the community forum held at the Williamsburg Library. It was a healthy, fruitful exchange of ideas, questions being fielded by the chief of police from Williamsburg, from James City County, from York County. It was a very healthy exchange of ideas and a very fruitful discussion. It was perfectly moderated and it gives me great hope for our community. Thank you.
Dude from NASA, thanks for returning my drivers' license. You even brought it to my house for me. Thanks!
As I left a bank on Wednesday, I'm homeless, I'm disabled and I went to my bank to get money. I could not retrieve money. And as I walked out the door, a man came out and offered me money. I did not accept it, but I want to tell that man how much I really, really appreciate his love and kindness. Thank you very much.
Just a reminder: Parking your maroon SUV in a fire lane is a violation, even when you've got your handicapped hangtag hanging from the rear view mirror. You're lucky I called the Last Word instead of the police.
VDOT, please fix your highway advisory radio transmitter in front of Pierce's on I-64. The lights were flashing , but the message was absolutely unintelligible.
To the person who almost hit me on Jamestown Road Tuesday morning as you moved into the right lane from the left lane without a signal – you realize I was fast enough to put on my brakes and then hit the horn. You almost caused damage to my vehicle which would cause problems for me. Pay attention and take a class to improve your driving abilities.
Sports companies that withdrew their contracts from swimmer Ryan Lochte should offer the same endorsement contract to pole vaulter: Army Reservist - Sam Kendricks.
To the person who says that they should not have to subsidize anyone's health care insurance: Kudos to you. Finally, finally, there's a person in the Gazette area that pays 100% for their insurance costs. No Medicare, no Medicaid, no employer-sponsored insurance and they're definitely not on their parents' insurance. Because any of that—well, would be subsidizing.
I have the best cleaning lady I have ever had. She's trustworthy and reliable and really needs to work to support a small child. She will tackle any job, including cleaning sliding door tracks or shower grout with a toothbrush. She is an excellent organizer, she deep cleans, irons and handles fragile things carefully. She has solid references and reasonable rates. Her name is Diana, and she can be reached at 757-903-7621.
If you are looking for an excellent housekeeper, I highly recommend Tina Harris. She did an excellent job on my house, very thorough. Her phone number is 757-236-4782. She is wonderful.
This is the answer to the name of the cemetery along Rochambeau Drive, submitted to the Last Word on Aug. 13. It's not a pet cemetery. A single parent crashed there about 2 ½ years ago and died and her family set up the memorial. It's a family memorial, not a pet cemetery. Thank you.
The article in Saturday's Gazette referencing SOL scores for WJCC schools is disappointing. The disparity from top to bottom is my main concern. If I were the parent of a student in one of the lesser performing schools, I'd be all over the county to address this problem. Assuming the teachers and curriculum are of similar quality, a redistricting seems to be in order. I pulled my children from WJCC schools so I have no dog in this fight. Which schools do the board's children attend?
For those who still believe that teachers are overpaid. Here's a simple example of how much time it takes a teacher to grade one set of papers. This work usually cannot be done in class. 125 students: 5 min/paper = 10 hrs.; 10 min/paper = 21 hours; 15 min/paper =31 hours; 20 min/ paper=42 hours! For 100 students, maximum is 33 hours. For 150 students, maximum 50 hours. That's pretty much an entire work week for the 40 hour/week employee. Remember, I said one set of papers. And wouldn't you hope that your student's teacher spent more than five minutes grading that 500-word theme you helped them write?

I have some materials for teaching art history in high school—teacher materials. Please call 566-0869 prior to nine in the evening. Thank you.
To the person looking for prescription drug disposal: You might call the police department because they're the ones that did it last—this was October. So it has been done in the last nine months because I actually disposed of mine. So you might call them though to see when they're planning on doing another one.
Looking for someone who can value/appraise some old metal Tonka trucks and 50s/60s cameras.
Can anyone tell me who might be interested in unused old penny post cards? email@example.com
Why is there a "no turn on red" [sign] coming out of Lightfoot Marketplace, turning on to Richmond Road? As there is nothing that create a bottleneck or traffic and that's just when Harris Teeter is open. Just wait 'til the other stores are open. That sign needs to be removed.
I would like to know—I vote Democrat, but I sure am not this year. I would like to know why our great governor is pardoning all these people. They should be able to petition each individual themselves and he should not restore their rights until they do. He's awful funny. Instead of that, he needs to do something about these people who are driving and talking and texting on cell phones. It should be abolished where they can't do it. Thank you.
For employers who actually pay their employees a living wage and employ them full time! And have a serious benefits package and retirement savings plan! Since the argument against a tax break for the suffering companies is the high cost of employees, let's give a break to companies who come here, stay here and pay their employees well enough to pay their own bills! Eureka! Everybody wins!
Does anyone have updates on the Marquis Shopping Center near Water Country? I thought Sam's or Costco was coming and an indoor gun range too? Looks like nothing is happening there.

Kudos to Jamestown Beach Event Park! I was reading the recent Southern Living magazine and Jamestown Beach Event Park is listed in "The South's best swimming holes and waterfalls"!
Please have someone explain how a local Virginia resident can go to New Jersey with Virginia tags and a Virginia inspection sticker on his windshield and come back with New Jersey plates and no inspection detail on his car. What happens to local and state taxes if the vehicle is not inspected? What about the safety issues? Sounds dishonest to me.
I have received the most outrageous survey from the Census Bureau. Why do they need to know when I was married, when I moved into my house, how much do I have to pay in real estate taxes, how much do I have to pay for fuel? It just goes on and on and on. It's outrageous. I'm upset, and I hope that anybody else who has received these surveys will call our senators. I have called Senator Kaine and Warner and they have received many complaints, also. Please call your senators and your representative. Thank you.
Recently, Riverview Road was lined with a double yellow line. As a bicyclist living in Barhamsville and often riding to York River State Park, I would like to point out that in Virginia, it is now legal to cross a double yellow line in order to pass a bicycle, provided such movement can be made safely. Hopefully, this will lessen the frustration felt by motorists sitting behind a cyclist and unwilling to pass because of a passing restriction. But as always, it is never safe to pass a cyclist if you can't see far enough ahead to see what's coming. Even worse is to pass a cyclist when there's oncoming traffic. That happens often, believe it or not.
Two helpful hints to the "Simple math" clubhouse. Open the restaurant for a month at 11 a.m. instead of the bar. Then keep the open hours the same every day you decide you are open. "K.I.S.S." would stand for "Keep it simple, stupid." Thank you.
Yes, to the person who keyed the gray Hyundai: I've got news for you: We got a video and you'll be contacted by the police and my attorney. Good day.
I am a loyal Democrat, but I wonder if the Republicans do not have a valid point when they say our Democratic elected officials take our votes for granted. What do they do? What can we say that they have accomplished on our behalf? Not very much, especially in James City County and Williamsburg.
To all those who say a vote for the Libertarian Party is a wasted vote: Did you consider a vote for a Tea Party candidate was wasted? Gary Johnson will put forth a balanced budget. The Republicans and Democrats will scream but it will cut entitlements and reduce overspending while maintaining taxes. Then you all will see how the people you elected really feel.
Concerning gun control, an issue of deep concern to me, it appears that Hillary Clinton is on the side of reasonable background checks while Trump represents the NRA's blind-sighted policy of guns at any cost. Final score: Plus one for Hillary and Minus one for Trump.
Hillary Clinton has said that the Clinton Foundation will no longer accept foreign donations if she's elected president of the United States. So, let's see if we get this straight. While she was secretary of state, it was OK to accept foreign donations. While she's running for president, it's OK to accept foreign donations. I thought foreign donations were a good thing. Now, if she's president of the United States, they actually might be buying influence. Really? What a joke.
There is no evidence that Trump has put one nickel in the Trump charitable foundation in the last eight years or distributed so much as a happy meal to those less fortunate than him. The Clinton Foundation has distributed 9 million vaccinations, Aids drugs, seeds , farming equipment and water projects, helping tens of millions and Trump wants her locked up for it. Go figure.
Yes, I was just curious. Where is our President during this catastrophic disaster that's going on in Louisiana with all the flooding? He hasn't mentioned anything about it. I guess, you know, he doesn't think it's very important although there's 40,000 homes lost there. He gets to be a disgrace when it comes to the public interest. I guess he's too taken aback with his golf game, you know, to care anything about the poor citizenry of the United States. Thank you.
Just wondering how much the Clinton Family Foundation donated to the Louisiana flood victims?
Your editorial cartoon for Saturday, Aug. 20, was misleading, inaccurate and irresponsible. The right wing chatter about Hillary's health has been de-bunked, and her medical records have been released. Perhaps the cartoon should have shown the Secret Service guarding Trump's tax returns!
A recent Facebook item pointed out the irony in the DNC's anger over Russian hackers trying to manipulate our election by pointing out the DNC's manipulation of our election.
This week Trump released his latest clothing line! With his change in his stand on throwing all 41 million illegal aliens from the USA to a "softer" stance he has introduced a line of beachwear known as "flip-flops" that he wants to sell to his followers.
It is fascinating that Hillary Clinton won't talk to the press, in spite of the fact that almost all of them are on her side.
