Last Word: Honor thy educator, Sept. 3

Teacher pay

We need more teacher appreciation as these individuals have a big responsibility for all of our futures young and old. I recently read an article in a local magazine where three local businesses are doing appreciation lunches for all of the educators. They referred to it as the XI Commandment, "Honor Thy Educator!" What a great effort. The article further said these businesses took this Williamsburg-born program to a national platform for other businesses to model and honor their educators. What a great honor to educators and a demonstration of living in a great community.

Absentee voting

New to Virginia. Does anyone know when in-person absentee voting starts and if I can vote on weekends?

Free to you: Old postcards, some over 80 years old. 757-229-1390.

Still sitting

Regarding the disrespectful football player who refused to stand for our national anthem because he feels repressed because he's black in America. If getting a million dollars a year to play a game that you love is being oppressed, well sign me up. He isn't oppressed, he's just plain disrespectful. Let's also remember that sport figures are role models for our youth.

The San Francisco quarterback who refused to stand for the playing of our national anthem should be released and not allowed to play professional football. I don't care what your cause, being an American, living in this country, reaping the benefits of your freedom to follow your dreams means that you should show your love and appreciation for the United States. Our pledge of allegiance and our national anthem are ways of giving thanks for being lucky enough to live in the USA. We don't need people like you. We need people who want to improve our country for everyone. Thank you.

Yellow butterflies

Can anyone tell me about the yellow "butterflies," what they are that they're flying around? I don't mean the yellow-and-black monarchs. These are just yellow. I don't know if they're moths or butterflies, but I have tons of them in my yard, and this is the first year that I've seen them. And I'm just interested in what they are, habitat and things like that. Are their little babies going to come in my yard next year and eat all my plants? What's going to happen? Just interested. Thank you.

Simple pleasures

As a new resident, I want to thank whoever is responsible for thoughtful planting along Route 199 East at the Mooretown exit before the overpass. I drive by there daily and the sheer beauty of all the blooms put a smile on my face. Ahh! The simple pleasures.

Over in Charlottesville

So, according to a UVA administrator as quoted in the Daily Press, raising tuition by 70% over the past seven years while sitting on a $3.2B pot of money was prudent. Seems no thought was given to the students and families that are saddled with crushing student debt over the next 20 years as a result of their prudence. Obviously, UVA has no clue about the realities of life in the "real world."

Back to school

Next year for back-to-school open house maybe they could eliminate the "three-ring circus" in the school and in the parking lot! Maybe staggering the grade level open house times and also having police directing traffic would be more effective. It took longer to find parking and leave the school property than anything else.

Looking for ...

I'm collecting exercise balls to be used in the classroom. Exercise/stability balls provide benefits ranging from quieter classrooms to more attentive and engaged students. If your exercise ball is sitting in the corner unused, I would gratefully accept donations or I am willing to purchase for a nominal fee. Contact me at elbrinn@netscape.net and I will arrange pickup. Thank you.

In the Aug. 27 Last Word, someone wanted to know if anyone in the area might be interested in old penny postcards. I collect, buy and sell old postcards as a hobby. You may contact me (John ) at 757-634-1706 or yorkantiquepc@aol.com.

If you're in need of someone to clean house, may I recommend my girl, Michelle, 757-613-8074. She is reliable, honest, pays attention to detail and very affordable!

Single mom of one seven-year-old little girl in need of help with school clothes and shoes. She's a size 6X and 7 in shirts and pants and a size 11C in shoes. If anyone can help, please give me a call at 757-849-8530.

I need to have some brickwork repaired and repointed. Can anybody recommend a reliable brick mason who does small jobs?

I am looking for someone who can professionally copy an old photo of my father and format it to fit a locket I plan to wear. You cannot begin to imagine how much this means to me—or maybe you can and that's why you'll call. My number is 757-298-5026.

Help! I am so frustrated in my search. Is there any store or medical supply house in the vicinity of Williamsburg or Newport News where I can see a three-wheel roller walker with a basket, before I buy one from the Internet? Returns are at the buyer's expense if I order from a picture and the walker is not what I expected.

What is the new restaurant coming in at the intersection of Waller Mill and Richmond Road? Hopefully, something fresh. We need a place with a fantastic salad bar, in my opinion at least. Editor's note: It's a Jose's Tequila, still gathering more information.

Student voters

Regarding college students' right to vote: I see no difference in college students and "snow birds." Both live here 9-10 months a year, the only difference is college students leave for the summer and snow birds leave for the winter.

In response to the letter to the editor from Terence Wehle (VG Aug. 31), I think giving the students of William and Mary their own council seat is a good idea, especially if they tend to be more active voters than the rest of Williamsburg voters as stated in your letter to the editor.

Sidecar Santa

As summer is ending, Sidecar Santa has started to collect Beanie Babies to give out this Christmas season. This will be my fifth year and I am looking forward to seeing the children around Williamsburg again. I can be contacted at sidecarsanta@hotmail.com if you have any beanie type toys you wish to give. I will get back with you as quickly as I can to arrange pick-up.

Recommended

Kudos and much appreciation to Middle Plantation Animal Hospital's Dr. Randall Dunsmore and staff for treating a seriously injured wild turtle as though it were a cherished pet. Amazing compassion and expert care offered in a scenario where compensation was neither sought nor expected.

Another good word about Jolly Pond Veterinary Clinic owned by Doctor Bonnie Brown. Cindy has been one of the best employees as she goes the extra mile to help you. There are questions that a pet owner may have and you can always count on a speedy reply about your concern. The staff takes the time to help you regardless of what the problem may be. That makes for a warm and friendly office with outstanding professional service and I say Thank you!

I would like to say "Thank you" to Jack Van Kneist and his technicians . When he says he'll be there at 10 AM, he means 10 AM. His workers are top quality. We are more than satisfied with their work. We have had them here in our home twice. Next time we need home repair, guess who we will call? (757) 565- 2699.

Watching TV

This client is getting very tired about having access to the CBS channel 3. It has gone on far too long. To the Tribune side: please participate in the negotiation process. To the Dish side: I pay for local access, but what I really want is the national products. If you are unable to get them at local channels, broadcast national ones obtained from a national source, such as Washington Channel 9. Thank you.

Social sisters

Our Sigma Kappa alum group in Williamsburg has planned a variety of activities for the coming year. We will join the local Alzheimer's walk, have a social evening at a member's house, celebrate Founders Day with lunch at Opus Nine, fill Easter baskets for the children served by CASA, just to mention a few. If you are a Sigma Kappa alum and enjoy socializing, helping local charities, and sharing our sisterhood, please call 757-561-7235 to receive more information.

Obama movie

Someone wondered why the Obama movie is not scheduled locally. Last weekend it finished in 13th place in box office receipts. Movie theaters are in the business to make money and fill seats. A movie about Obama just won't do it.

Bicycle friendly

Let's keep our bike-riding citizens of James City County safe by fixing the sidewalks along Richmond Road, especially in front of the 7-Eleven at the 7200 block of Richmond Road. Bikers have to stop, dismount and lift their bikes over two tall curbs before proceeding to and from the Norge Post Office. Thank you.

Cartoon fodder

Regarding Fred Siegel's cartoons: They used to be funny. Please ask him to keep up being funny instead of being political. It doesn't look too good on him. Thank you.

Veterans affairs

In response to the Veterans Affairs submission where the writer gave the Obama Administration an A plus: I would love to know the grading criteria used. As a 21-year veteran myself who deployed several times under this administration before retiring, I would grade Mr. Vacation at the other end of the spectrum. I feel for those Navy ships dealing with ROE policies that put them in harm's way. Labor participation rate hasn't been this low since the seventies. Many defense cuts with very little to show for it. Many more negatives -- why an A plus?

School performance

Once again, a Last Word commenter bashed the system for underperforming schools. When will we as a society discard our PC blinders are start addressing the real situation—the communities and more importantly, the family situations that these students come from. I believe our teachers are doing the best they can. But if their parents do not support and become involved in their child's learning, many will be lost despite the teachers' best efforts.

Car registration

I find it very offensive that some of our local residents may be avoiding personal property taxes by not registering their vehicles in Virginia. While some of the out-of-state tags belong to visitors and others to active duty military personnel, that does not account for all that are observed. Especially questionable are those vehicles displaying both out-of-state tags and stickers from local residential developments.

Book exchange

I know the lady who was running the Book Exchange has been very ill. Has she got anyone else that's going to try to open the store at a new location, or is the Book Exchange closed permanently? I'm just very interested in knowing, you know, one way or the other because I have a few books if you're going to reopen. Thank you.

A cool walk

If the weather is too hot outside for walking, go to the Quarterpath Recreation Center in Williamsburg. You can walk inside an air-conditioned gym 11 times for a mile. They provide a leather-beaded string to help you count your laps. Walkers walk from 8 - 1 p.m, Monday-Friday. The center is located on Quarterpath Road, near the Valero gas station. Come join us. It is closed now for maintenance and will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Trapped again

Well, here we go again! Traffic nightmares for September 10 & 11. You know, when I bought my house off of Rt. 5, I didn't expect to be trapped in my neighborhood on spring and fall weekends by events closing the roads I have to use. Maybe once a year but this is getting ridiculous now!

Thank you

To the person who found my wallet in the Harris Teeter parking lot and returned it: I just want to say "Thank you very much." Today it is so nice to know that people like you still exist.

Cost to attend

I noticed a big ad in the Daily Press for the schedule of games at Todd Stadium, in which all Newport News High school football games are played, and saw their prices are $5 with any resident over 60 as free and if non-resident $3. I ask why is the admission to James City/ Williamsburg high school games $6 for everyone? It should boost attendance to be progressive like Newport News!

Drive on

As everyone complains about left lane bandits, people state that road signs read "slower traffic keep right." Those signs were removed from Route 64 because they confused native Virginians, who were granted left lane status as a birthright. If you flash your lights asking them to move over, that is a sign of aggressive driving. But wait, Virginia is a right to carry state; what are they trying to tell us?

Second amendment

I believe today America needs to change the Constitution of the United States. It was written when the membership of the Continental Congress thought the British army might come back and make America a British colony again. Today, America needs to change it to read that "the right to own a gun or rifle is granted only to our armed services for homeland defense and our police for their protection. I believe today guns and rifles should not be used for the pleasure of hunting and killing an animal.

Free to you

I have free irises, purple and yellow, free. Just come and get them. Have to plant now for spring. 804-966-9784.

President's visit

There is was a stupid remark in Last Word about our President and the Louisiana disaster. He was very concerned about the flooded area. He called the governor immediately and was told to delay his visit until the next week since he wanted the emergency personnel to concentrate on recovery rather than providing escort for the President. He came on Tuesday. At least he didn't show up for 48 seconds like Trump did for his photo op. Thank you.

President Obama did not rush down to Louisiana right after the flood because he was asked not to by the officials there, said that would avoid rushing services to the stricken. Thank you.

Presidential politics

In 1960 the KKK and John Birch came out hard against Kennedy because they didn't believe Catholics were Christians. When I was eight, the Williamsburg Boy Scouts didn't allow Catholics for the same reason . When Catholics hear Trump talking about religious tests for anything, we think that we could be next.
