Please stop with the redistricting based on free lunches. Kids need to go to the school that is closest to their home and with the kids in their neighborhood. There will be protest if the school board tries to bus kids across town. People buy homes based on school districts and could lose money if their home is redistricted. Stop with the "political correctness." It is what it is—don't try to fix something that is not broken.
The last I looked, the First Amendment guarantees every American the right to speak his mind. Peaceful protest such as kneeling during the National Anthem is protected by law. If you are opposed to this form of peaceful protest, get up and leave, but never try to inflict your views on another American. All Americans are obliged to respect the views of others. I may not support your views, but I fought so that you could have them without fear of arrest.
I was very skeptical about the Pottery management being able to handle something the size of this KingsLand resort, when they so obviously misjudged their new venture in the Pottery. I'd take a long, hard look at this if I were members of either of the county supervisors. Thank you.
I'm calling about the Pottery property. I think possibly something inside is needed because Busch Gardens and everything else is outside, like a Chuck E. Cheese or a Dave & Buster's or anything that families can use inside.
I think that the KingsLand idea proposed by the owner of the Williamsburg Pottery is a wonderful idea. I think that they should contact Disney and see if Disney would do a theme park there, called "America, the 19th Through the 21st Centuries." That way, Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg "Revolutionary City" and Yorktown could prepare people for that particular time in history and then everyone could go from there to the Disney theme park or resort for continuing history from after the Revolution until present day. I think they should also add an indoor ice skating rink. Thank you. Good day.
So now the owners of The Pottery, who turned a quirky, thriving complex which attracted busloads of shoppers from miles around into a pseudo-Disneyland set in the middle of a large, empty parking lot, want to favor us with another of their glittering creations? Heaven forfend!
My immediate reaction on seeing the proposal for the Pottery property on Wednesday's Gazette first page was to retch. The last thing we need is to turn Williamsburg into Orlando on the Virginia Peninsula.
The only good news from the Pottery's plan to build a playground is that the county won't be on the hook for extending Mooretown Road.
A resident has asked to have his property rezoned from R - 1 to A - 1. All of us who currently live there bought into a residential neighborhood. So did his family. The idea that it can be changed because of one resident is baffling. The residents who are aware of the request are opposed to it happening. We worry about potential diseases horses carry, property values, the current state of waste already on the property... If passed it sets a precedent that will open a huge can of worms for the Williamsburg community at large. It also dishonors the residents in the neighborhood.
Last Wednesday, my freezer stopped working. I called four local appliance services—twice—requesting a service call ASAP. On my second call to True Blue (Newport News), someone actually answered the phone. They came Thursday morning and restored service temporarily and replaced a fan motor on Monday. One other appliance service called back late Thursday (on vacation). The other two have still not returned my calls. True Blue can be reached at 253-0218. Elliott was professional and a true gentleman.
Our cat, Sandy, recently passed away after we discovered she had a brain tumor. During Sandy's treatment prior to her death, Morgan Castner, D.V.M., Anderson's Corner Animal Hospital in Toano, and his staff could not have been more helpful and compassionate. If you are looking for an excellent vet who practices with care and compassion, we highly recommend Dr. Castner.
While I agree that some TV shows are suggestive to our youth, it's the parents' job to raise their children to respect the law. Blaming others for your not doing your job is just another example of not taking responsibility of being a parent.
Why so hostile?
People, please listen up, specifically seniors in Williamsburg. In the four years I have lived in Williamsburg, I have witnessed some of the most egregious acts of hostility toward the people employed at our local grocery stores, specifically the Fresh Market . Demanding and impatient, the offenders slam hands on the counter and wave them as if they are being ignored on purpose. A few months ago, I was speaking with an employee in the parking lot and an impatient hostile offender blew his horn and hit the gas as I crossed the small parking area on the way to my car. What's with the hostility? Chill out and enjoy the time that you have left here on earth—stop being so incredibly rude to others.
I'm not a resident of Woodmere Drive or either neighborhood that adjoins the group home location, but my sympathies go out to those who work their entire lives to purchase homes in that area, only to have their home values decimated by this group home. The houses on either side or across the street from the facility have been rendered worthless. No one would ever buy a home, knowing that such a facility existed so close.
A previous Last Word writer wondered about the fuss over cats and the growing disappearance of certain kinds of birds. Only in the last 100 years have cats become pampered house pets free to breed and given medical treatment to live longer. That century has also seen the expansion of suburbs and the explosion of non-native cat populations into the native bird habitats. As far as windmills, Smithsonian studies estimate between 150,000 and 350,000 bird deaths. Cats kill between 1.4 and 3.7 billion birds each year. That's easily managed by neutering your cats and keeping them indoors.
Is it legal for Virginia Natural Gas to deny on-line access to view current and historical information about one's account on the basis of not being signed up for electronic billing? And what purpose does this serve? Surely it is not an additional expense for them as they already provide such information for customers that opt for electronic billing. I should think rather, that it is an additional expense to separate out customers for the purpose of denying them this service.
Does anyone know why the James City County Facebook page is headed by a photograph of a vandalized field or pasture? Editor's note: A click on the photo brings up this explanation. "Due to the demolition of the former Fire Station 1 in Toano, the parking lot in front of the Satellite Services Building at 3127 Forge Road is currently closed. Temporary parking is available on the opposite side of the Satellite Services Building until construction activities are complete."
Time to retire?
It is time for Coach Laycock to leave. Are you kidding me? I have followed Tribe football since 1966 when it was known as Indian football and have been a season ticket holder since 1991. Coach Jimmye Laycock has built a quality athletic program; He and his coaches have produced quality teams consistently. A football season is a complex animal made up of blown knees, dropped passes, tipped balls, poor weather, and quality opponents. Coach Laycock regularly has turned out high quality, well educated, degree-earning young men of which any program would be proud. I would rather win half the games and see all the players graduate on time than to cut corners or sacrifice academic standards and win all the games while only half the players graduate. Coach Laycock will tell us when it is time for him to retire.
Does it make sense to anyone that an elementary school with 44% free and reduced-price lunch has the same number of teaching assistants as a school with 19% free and reduced-price lunch? It's not shocking that these schools do not perform as well as the schools with a lower percentage.
Doing a good job
It has become clear that the interim WJCC Superintendent, Olwen Herron, is exactly what our school system needs. Our previous superintendent and assistant superintendent from a few years back clearly showed that a great resume does not necessarily result in great or even good leadership. Teachers and parents need to be heard and not simply dictated to. Our recent past should be taken into consideration and Dr. Olwen should stay rather than going to the expense of enlisting an outside firm to tell us what we need. Our school system is too good to make these critical mistakes again.

Looking for honest, hard-working cleaning lady with references to clean my home every two to three weeks. Please leave recommendations and contact information in the Last Word. Many thanks and have a blessed day!
I'm looking for a place to buy firewood. I'd like to find a place where I can pick it up and pick it out myself. I need shorter lengths.
To the person asking about Early Bird menus: Center Street Grill offers a great one Sunday through Thursday. Their Early Bird menu is in addition to all of their other weekly and daily specials. Try it out; you will not be disappointed.
Where is R.J., the hairdresser from Fantastic Sam's?
Alex, formerly of Duke's Barber Shop, is now working at Colonial Barber & Beauty on Monticello Avenue. Give him an call at 757-220-8039.
I really liked my dentist, Dr. Breanne Barrineau, at Williamsburg Dental Group, but she no longer works there. Does anyone know where she's gone?
Just had to give a big "Danke Schoen" shout out, to the Waypoint Seafood & Grill for their "Wunderbar" Oktoberfest last Monday the 3rd. All was "Sehr Gut"- the fantastic "Happy Dutchman" German Band, the music, the dancing, the beer, the wine, the fun guests, and the great German food! "Vielen Danke!! , and here's to next year!!
I stand by Hillary. She is absolutely not the self-serving, lying crook that impressionable people have come to believe. She has been hounded for years by self-appointed "Witch Hunters", who have spread rumors, innuendos, and outright lies, in an effort to discredit her in every way possible. I have been around a long time, and know of what I speak. I am not implying that Hillary is perfect; none of us are. But she is far more qualified to lead this country than her opponent, whose platform consists of daily attempts to assassinate her character, by projecting onto her, his own reprehensible characteristics and actions.
Why vote for Hillary Clinton? She has many failures—insecure emails, corrupt Clinton Foundation, lives lost at Benghazi, vicious attacks of women involved with Bill Clinton. She will continue Obama's failed policies—open borders, high unemployment, escalating national debt, low military readiness, poor veterans' hospitals. If she couldn't protect four Americans at Benghazi, how could she protect our nation? Donald Trump will secure our borders, bring jobs back, build up our military, properly "vet" refugees, help our veterans. He will make America great again.
Young people need to know history will repeat itself if you don't learn from mistakes. There was one depression, one near depression and eleven recessions under eight of the last eight Republican presidents and none of them lost nearly a billion dollars in one year and filed bankruptcies six times.
Yes, after watching the debate tonight between Senator Kaine and Governor Pence, and all the chatter that was on the email and the Twitters, and what have you, it came across that Senator Kaine was more like a bully to Governor Pence. And any time that Governor Pence would bring up a point, it appeared that Senator Kaine would use a distraction of some sort, like Donald Trump's taxes. It didn't seem like Senator Kaine wanted Governor Pence to really get his point across. So, it appeared to me as a bully versus a strong leader. Thank you.
After the opening 20 rude, bickering and interrupting minutes of the vice presidential debate, my wife and I turned off the television, vowing to change our votes to the Clinton-Pence ticket over the Trump-Kaine ticket.
Pence's persona was much better than Trump's. Kaine was worse than Trump. And I am not voting for Trump.
This morning, when Governor Pence was giving a beautiful speech to people who were at his rally in Virginia, guess who interrupted that speech through a public service announcement? It was Barack Obama, about the hurricane that's coming. Now, it's great to know that a hurricane's coming and for people to take action, but I've never known Obama to do this at all. This was a blatant, blatant call to break up a speech to the people so they could be informed. Thank you.
I am so angry because of the bogus NRA ad. It is one big fallacy. The NRA is very rich and powerful, and that's why they are getting away with the big lie that the Democrats are going to take your guns away. All the Democrats that I've seen on TV have said that they are gun owners themselves, and they do not have any plans of hurting the Second Amendment. Thank you.
