For the third game in a row, Section 103 elevator is shut off to fans so that they are forced to walk two long walks to wait for the "overcrowding" of the far section elevator. All because our athletic director (retiring-Yea!) has directed (or not informed otherwise) the operator to allow only the media or coaching staff to use the 10-person elevator! I am handicapped, have 44 years of season ticket holding and resent this selfish stupidity!
Rules of the road
To the gentleman riding the recumbent trike through Chickahominy Haven the morning of Oct. 19: The rules of the road apply to you, too! When a bus is stopped with its lights on/stop sign out and children are loading, you should stop just like everyone else. It would probably be best not to pass the bus on the left side either. If a child had been crossing the street to get on at that moment, you could have caused an accident. According to VDOT's pamphlet on sharing the road, bicyclists should "obey all traffic signs, signals, lights, and markings."
One for the dogs
Thank you, Colonial Williamsburg, for a wonderful day at Dogs of DoG Street. The weather was great and the event was of fun. One thing—the carriage was going much faster than last year for some of the dogs to keep up. Could Liberty maybe walk with the dogs all the way next year instead of riding in a carriage?
Dominion, have you ever heard of the "western link"? It is an underwater power cable 239 miles long that takes power from Scotland to England. Go ahead – google it. Then quit telling us you can't run a cable a mile or so under the James.
Let's see, if the Supreme Court rules that a man who identifies as a woman can use the lady's rest- room, does it then follow that she can play on the women's basketball team, or maybe on the women's track and field team? Oh my, what a slippery slope we are on!
Zoned for horses
I would love to have an area near me zoned to allow horses. What disease do these people think the horses will have? If they're owned by veterinarians, they should be in excellent health. I'm sure their stalls will be cleaned and their waste removed. Years ago when I visited Busch Gardens, the Clydesdale's stalls were so spotless that you could practically eat off them and the pastures were so clean. I've seen people who live worse than some people's animals.
I needed my front steps re -done and it was hard to find a brick mason to come out to my house as the job was a small one. I found a great man by the name of Tony Harris, a superb masonry professional. What a perfect job he did. I highly recommend him as no matter how small the job, he will perform the work. His number is 593-1310.
The movie "Queen of Katwe" is outstanding and a worthwhile choice—true story, wonderful cast! A feel good movie!
I highly recommend Kevin Fox, service manager at Priority Nissan in Lightfoot, to readers of The Virginia Gazette. Kevin is simply outstanding in making sure that your car receives the best possible care and attention. He has always been most accommodating when it comes to scheduling appointments and has always gone out of his way to be most helpful every time I have visited.
To anyone looking for a good contractor, I highly recommend Mark Davis Custom Contracting, 757-696-6315. He and his crew have done several fairly large jobs for us over the years, all with timely, excellent results at a reasonable price.
Khalid has done it again. He assisted in installing and configuring a new Dell Inspiron 7000 series computer to meet my needs and specifications. He assisted in configuring three computers, one personal and two used for work, to print on the network printer. Khalid is can always be depended upon to solve these problems, which seem minor, but are difficult for the common user to resolve. He took me from Windows Vista to Windows 10. What a relief.
Based on an opinion published in the Last Word, I decided to give Mark of Mark's Hair Studio a try. He did a great job. One of the best cuts I have ever received. A big shout out and thanks to the person who suggested him. I lost the number but found it through Facebook. Everyone else should call 757-345-9810.
To anyone looking for a good contractor: I highly recommend Mark Davis Custom Contracting, 757-696-6315. He and his crew have done several fairly large jobs for us over the years, all with timely excellent results at a reasonable price. Thank you.
I would like to highly recommend Jason and Brian at 757-869-4884 as I had my insulation removed and re installed for a great price. They were in and out in a day and everything was very clean and neat. I actually found Jason and Brian with a post in the Last Word myself.
If you have a dog that requires grooming, you will want to take it to The Grooming Divas which just opened at 6929 Richmond Road. I started taking my dog to Trish after she was shaved twice by a groomer at a local pet resort. Trish takes her time and does an excellent job. Her number is 757-969-9411.
Whenever I want comfort food, I head over to the Grecian Plate and eat the best Greek salad in town, followed by these homemade desserts. It's absolutely delicious. The owners are wonderful, warm and inviting, I feel like I'm home. Thank you.
In response to the person looking for crawl space repair: I recommend Hurley Piggott (or Jr.) of Crawl Space Master. Does it all under the house. His number is 804-614-7311 or 804-397-5852.
As a Williamsburg native, I read the article, "Colonial Williamsburg to undergo major makeover," with interest. My one question is, with four sites being enhanced and instead of hiring more employees, they say they will reposition where employees are placed, it begs to have the question answered, what sites will now not be as good as they were or will close?
One day last week I visited a local sporting goods store to buy one box of shotgun target loads. Not only did a have to show ID but had to sign that I was an American citizen. That afternoon, I visited a local doctor for a six month check-up. After showing ID, I signed no less than five pages, two of them saying that my ID was me and I would cover any expense if need be. We live in a dangerous world and can expect additional security overlay going forward. It seems pretty simple to me that voter ID is needed in order to keep the American citizen's most precious right fair and honest.
To whoever said that if the people would have followed the officer's command, they would be alive today: Were you on the scene when it happened? What if it was your son and he was white?
Does anyone have an idea how old the huge live oak tree might be that is behind the courthouse in Colonial Williamsburg?
Looking for ...
Does anyone know of a business or individual who can help with connecting new audio/video components? Nothing on a "grand scale" media room level but just the family room TV, DVR, sound system, etc?
Does someone know who I can call to reupholster a chair I have? If you know a business or individual you can personally recommend, please post the information in the Last Word. Thank you.
Yes, does anyone know of anyone in the area who does permanent eyebrow stenciling? If they happened to know that, would they call 585-2618? I need a referral to have that process done. Thank you.
If you are looking for someone to do a housecleaning job, well done, once a month, you can call me at 757-741-2044.
If anyone has a cotton fabric, thread or batting used for quilting and you would like to get rid of it, I would be happy to come pick it up. Please call 757-784-1242. I'm a new quilter, and I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much.
Looking for a recommendation for someone to renovate a bathroom and replace a tub/shower inset with a tiled shower. Thank you.
Looking for someone who can sew curtains/drapes for a couple of rooms in my home.
While it was wonderful to read in the Oct. 15 paper thanking Dominion workers, I would like to send a thank you for the Dominion office staff that answered our calls. When I called to check and make sure our area was on the list, I got a very nice lady, very pleasant and informative. I'm sure she must have received a number of irate people, but she kept her "cool" and answered my questions. When I thanked her and apologized for my unimportant questions, she said she was happy to do her work and keep people happy. A big thank you to all the workers for their work and concern!
Free to you
I have got a baby mattress, all cloth covered, organic, for free, for someone who needs it. It is slightly stained from being used with my children, but it is very clean—I have cleaned it and I don't want to throw it away. It is very nice. Please call 757-287-5485 if you could use a baby mattress like this. Thanks so much.
If anyone out there needs firewood, we have a maple tree down that you can cut up for firewood. No cutting it on Sundays. Call 229-1042. It's free.
I have a whole bag full of various colors of yarn, and I wanted to find out if there's anybody that might be able to use them. Thank you.
What happened to the saying, "If you cannot say something good about a person, do not say anything at all"? Always look for the best in other people, and you will enjoy better health. Always accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative and you will be a blessing to other people. It is easy to love the lovable, but God wants all of us to love the people who not lovable.
If you missed the special on PBS last week about the hummingbirds, I hope it will be repeated. Of course, the subject of hummingbirds is a fascinating subject, but the topography was absolutely spectacular. It was such a wonderful, interesting—I don't have enough adjectives to describe how great this program was. If it's available on DVD, I'm going to look into it myself. It was just fascinating. Many of the pictures were taken in the Andes, in Peru. It was not only beautiful—I just don't have enough adjectives. I do hope that if you missed it, you will be able to see it sometime.
Taking a knee
Yes, I see in today's Last Word on the protest by the athletes. I agree, if they are being paid or the people pay to come in to see them play, that's what they should do. It's not pay to protest, it's pay to play—see them play. If they want to do that, let them contact the Democratic Party. They have plenty of openings for protestors. Thank you.
To the person who placed the political signs at the edge of the College Woods property along the John Tyler Lane right-of-way: Both the Code of Virginia (Section 33.2-1224) and Williamsburg Code of Ordinances (Chapter 21, Art. 6) prohibit placing signs in this location and state law prescribes a $100 fine. Do you really believe that your disregard for the law reflects favorably on your candidates? Why not do yourself and your candidates a favor? Take responsibility for your political preferences by removing the signs and placing them on your own property.
We would like to thank the men from James City Fire & Rescue who responded to my wife's 911 call on Sept. 30. Our pet Pug was caught under our power recliner and I was stuck in the chair. Our dog suffered severe damage to his paw when the men lifted me off the chair, allowing them to feed the dog. Be grateful that we have such a dedicated squad. Please show your support to our county and city squads.
Many thanks to the wonderful hard working volunteer organizer(s) who made the FC bi-annual yard sale at the Williamsburg Community Center again a big success and lots of fun! As for the woman who made some very derogatory comments to one vendor about another vendor whom she didn't even know—and in front of a minor—she is to be pitied for being anything but a nice person, to put it mildly!
I heard that Jamie was leaving Ruby Tuesdays last night. Thank you so much, Mr. Kehayes. You've been very welcoming in the community and for giving us a place to call a second home. You will be missed.
For those who wrote in complaining about the House of Representatives being the problem with not getting anything done while Obama was in office, not true! Obamacare was put through and it's a total nightmare. Thank God Obama's other wants and wishes were rejected by the House of Representatives!
I don't understand people complaining about Trump's behavior and its influence on our children. I guess they have no problem with the Clinton's behavior. Teaching your children that it's all right to continually lie and enable your pervert husband to abuse women is the right role model to follow.
A vote for Trump will save our Supreme Court and that is why I must give him my vote. He will allow me to practice my Catholic faith and continue to foster true American values. A vote for Clinton will surely rob our saving accounts, fill the courts with those of little allegiance to America and break down our churches one by one. Trump may not be my first choice, but I must vote for him for the sake of my grandchildren.
I encourage everyone to watch the film "Hillary's America" based on a TRUE story.
If Trump loses, it's because the election is rigged. They are going to let women vote again.
In reference to the caller's comment on the first three years of the Obama Administration being held up by the House of Representatives: If my mind is correct, the Democrats controlled the House during the first four years—is that not correct? Thank you.
Yes, answer to the person/caller emulating Donald Trump: I would clearly want my child to emulate Donald Trump, who says vulgar things, versus our President Bill Clinton, who did impeachable things. So, you know, I don't think he'll ever be called "Saint Bill," but, anyway, we'll see how it goes. Time's running out. Thanks.
With the death this year of Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court, the new president has a chance to make a fair and balanced Supreme Court out of what has been for at least the last 20 years a right-leaning group of conservatives.
Would any Trump supporter please let us know where a woman has to rate on Trump's scale to be beautiful enough to warrant his unwanted attention. On a scale of 1 to 10, is an 8.5 high enough or are only 9.8's considered? Is age a factor or is the starting point 18? Trump made it clear at one of his rallies that in these matters he has his standards!
It appears to me that intelligent, thoughtful, rational, logical and moral American voters believe that there is no presidential candidate worthy of our vote in our upcoming election. What is the answer? I believe the answer is to vote on election day; however, do not vote for a presidential candidate. Leave that portion of your ballot blank. If the winning presidential candidate obtains a low percentage of total votes cast, and she/he is intelligent enough, he/she may modify their personal, political and issues position to be more worthy of representing our citizens and country.
With all the WikiLeaks stuff that is dripping out, just drip by drip by drip, do you think Donald Trump promised Julian Assange a pardon?
The FBI has released their statements to show that a top State Department official tried to pressure the FBI to change its security classification on least one of the emails on Hillary Clinton's unsecured private server. Hillary stated earlier she had no classified emails on her server. Ms. Clinton, the State Department employee and FBI agents should be charged with corruption and security violations immediately. Congress should initiate an investigation. This is bigger than Watergate.
Here is the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle as it relates to Nov. 8. If political power is more important to you than national security, vote Clinton. If what Trump has SAID is less serious than what Clinton has DONE, vote Trump.
