Middle school sports, flying the flag and waiting on the ferry: Last Word, Nov. 21

The Virginia Gazette

Flying the flag

To all businesses that fly the American flag: When the American flag is flying at half staff, as it is now for the attacks in Paris, it should be flying by itself. No state flag, no corporate flag, nothing else. The other flagstaffs around it should be empty. And after dark, the flag should be illumined or you take it down. Please, respect the flag. Fly it properly.

I'm praying that we don't become a country desensitized at seeing our flags at half-staff on a regular basis.

Power lines

In reading today's 11/14/15 headlines, it appears that Virginia Dominion Power is trying to buy its way into the hearts of the Williamsburg community. First there is the possibility of protecting Jamestown Island from potential sea level increasing and then there is the contribution for Liberty Ice Pavilion. I remember I tried to ply my way with my future mother-in-law by bringing her presents/flowers to gain the good graces of her daughter. One more time that money buys the community . Get ready to see the giant towers on the James River.

The recent headline, "Dominion Rising to Sea-Level Challenge," immediately suggested a subtitle, "Will build towers five feet taller." And it will create jobs!

Home sellers, beware

To all those looking to purchase someone else's home or have their home on the market, please don't do or allow this to happen to you: After listing with a Realtor, we went back and forth with a couple who wanted everything for nothing. Keep in mind that you plan your future purchase as far as your financing and your closing cost. Keep in mind that the seller is already paying a great deal of commission to the Realtor. Do not expect them to pay your closing. Many will pay a portion in order to push the sale but this is their investment and a place they have called home for a period of time. Don't go in greedy. If you truly have found a home you love, be prepared to pay for it! The seller is already stressed about the sale, a new purchase and move.

Middle school sports

It appears that Hornsby is the Gazette's preferred middle school sports program. The accomplishments of other local schools are frequently ignored, but HMS always shows up on the sports page. Why is that? Editor's note: For middle school sports, we rely on coaches to send us results and photos. So far, we've published everything we've received.

Waiting on the ferry

Here we are, on the Surry side, sitting on the ferry. Should be leaving at 25 after 6. Hasn't left until almost a quarter to 7. Twenty boats late, and the other boat coming from Jamestown is sitting right off the dock, waiting to land. This thing never, never runs on time This is absolutely ridiculous.

I agree with the recent articles about the daily tardiness of the Jamestown/Scotland ferries. It seems like they hardly ever depart on time, and when they finally do they slowly meander across the river in their normal course. The morning and evening are the worst. You can guarantee at least a 30-minute wait to board from the Williamsburg side in the evening, and then it is typically late leaving as well which is further insult to injury. VDOT has a duty to provide its citizens/taxpayers with reliable transportation. Their answer? Build a new boat that will surely be years over schedule that will hold an extra 20 cars. $27 million for a boat that will hold an extra 20 cars. How about more docks so more boats can run. That way, when someone locks their keys in their car it won't make everyone late to work? VDOT, you can do better. A lot of people rely on you daily to get to work, appointments, and other events on time.

King for a day

If I were king for a day in the USA I would: Increase the minimum wage to $11.00/hr. Increase retirement age for SS by two years for persons 45 years of age and younger. Enact Glass-Steagal provisions of the U.S. Banking Act. Allow negotiated pricing for Medicare prescription drugs. Increase auditors for Medicare costs and tax returns. Institute a plan for immigrants that allows a pathway for citizenship for anyone here at least 10 years. Send Trump and Clinton to Middle East to negotiate a peace treaty between Israel and Palestine with the proviso that they could not return until they accomplished this.

Refugees

In the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris, France, some elected officials in the United States have announced that they will refuse to help resettle refugees from Syria. Never mind that the United States has an exhaustive screening program in place for these refugees, never mind our country's xenophobic history of demonizing new waves of immigrants as murderous or worse. We stand with Paris. But we cannot be shortsighted in our treatment of those who are seeking asylum, and we must combat the intolerance and bigotry that Muslim Americans face as a result of politicians and pundits who stoke resentment and fear for personal gain.

All that is happening now with religious based terrorism has been going on for centuries with the same cast of characters. I think the next time we want to honor someone great, at the top of the list should be Charles Martel. If it were not for him at the Battle of Tours, there is a fairly good chance that you might not be a Christian. They were close to going right through Europe until he handed their heads to them, and not the other way around.

Let's substitute Jew for Muslim in the comments coming from the political right and we will see just how disgusting their comments are. The refusal of the U.S. to take in Jewish refugees in the late 1930's cost most of them their lives. If the right is truly Christian, then they need to follow the teachings of Christ and practice the compassion taught by him, not by spewing ignorance based hatred.

Did anyone expect our governor to look out for Virginians? Nope, Obama says jump and McAuliffe says "How high?" So here come "perfectly vetted" Syrian refugees.

Guns

You don't want guns? Well, look at France. The only people with guns were the terrorists, with nobody to stop them until law enforcement came in. What about the Syrians that President Obama wants to come to the United States. There's no checks. The President's using his executive order to do it. How are you going to screen them? Trump is right on both counts. He was right on protecting our borders. And people walk around and they're air heads. "We don't need to protect our borders. We don't need to worry." You think terrorists aren't going to come up through Mexico also? By the way, good luck going into Mexico and living there illegally or any other country right now. Everybody wants to protect their borders. EU had a meeting on protecting their borders. We have plenty of laws in place for gun control, and we need to enforce the laws of the land as far as immigration goes.

I recently saw a T-shirt that totally fits the Last Word gun debate. This shirt said, "You may not own a gun. That is your right. You may not believe in God. That is your right. But if someone is breaking into your home, I'll bet you will call someone with a gun and pray they will come in time to help you."

My daughter's kindergarten class ran out of paper to use during free time. My daughter's favorite thing to do is draw. I asked owner Geoff Suter of Suter Printing if they had any scrap paper they could donate to my daughter's kindergarten class at CBB. He gave them so much paper they will be drawing happily all year! A filled carton of white paper and rolls of paper loaded my car. What a great local business owner. Thanks for supporting our school and its future artists, Suter Printing!

Stryker building

Will the Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce walk out in front of their entrance door and take a picture across the street of the new city hall building and place it somewhere prominently in their Colonial Williamsburg information package that people will see? Will it be able to be posted on line? Just across the street we have this new Colonial Williamsburg office building. That will look really great—probably draw a lot of people. Thanks.

The Stryker Building is awesome! Congratulations to Stemann-Pease for their talent, hard work and success. Great recognition to you both.

They asked

RNC are ridiculous. Less than three months before the Iowa caucuses, there's a growing anxiety bordering on panic among these Republican elites about the dominance and durability of Donald Trump and Ben Carson and bewilderment. "There is no silver bullet," they say. Here's the problem with RNC. You asked us, "Do you want to stop the illegal immigrants" in their questionnaire. "Do you want to overturn Obamacare? Do you want to balance the budget? Do you want to change the tax program? Do you want to, of course, make sure there's clean air and clean water, but you want to make sure that the President doesn't do his executive EPA orders?" Do you want to do it and then they give you a list of who do you want. Do you want Chris Christie, do you want Jeb Bush, do you want Graham? They're so out of touch that the Republican people have taken this by storm and said, "Let's show you how to run the party. We will tell you what we want and how we want it done." And it's working.

A pardon?

Is it true that Valerie Jarrett made a statement that if Hillary Clinton is indicted that President Obama will pardon her? I would like to know. Thank you.

Bank cards

These new chip-equipped bank cards are really bad. They've turned a 10-second checkout into a two-minute ordeal.

Truth shows respect

This is to the caller who thinks it is okay to pump up his resume to impress a girl at a bar. I hope that girl that does not end up marrying you. What a disappointment to find out that you did not respect her or yourself enough to tell the truth.

Ben Carson

Hi. I'd like to question the person that called in regarding Ben Carson's integrity. I'd like to question their integrity. What proof do they have when bringing down Dr. Carson? They know nothing about his resume. Please tell me what they have.

While at work

I'm surprised that the Commissioner of Revenue for James City County did not have someone running against him. I've been there several times to only see him, with his feet propped up, reading the newspaper or doing crossword puzzles. And even one time doing cross stitch. I think the citizens of James City County deserve more. I think next time someone should oppose him.

Phone scams

When scammers call you and tell you they're from the IRS, politely thank them and tell them that you will go directly to the IRS office in Hampton and take care of the problem. Then hang up.

One might suggest that all of these people who are being taken in by these obvious telephone scams deserve it. Maybe they ought to consider it just a cost of education they failed to get a long time ago. Thank you.

Thank you

On Thursday, Nov. 12th, I took my nephew and one of his fellow sailors out to dinner at Sal's. They were both preparing to deploy on the USS Truman for 7 months to the Middle East. As I was getting ready to pay the bill, the couple in front of me in line, who were also sitting next to us during our dinner, asked to see the bill. The gentleman said, "I'll take care of this - tell them thank you for their service and that we will pray for them." I was totally caught off guard by this incredible act of kindness and generosity. When I told my nephew and his friend, they were so touched and wished they could have thanked them personally. I told them I'd put their heartfelt thanks in the Last Word with the hope that this couple will see it. May God bless you for your wonderfully kind gesture!

I would like to thank the Lafayette High School cheerleaders for joining in the "Star Spangled Banner" because they could get it played on the intercom on Friday night at the first play-off game. So, thanks to Lafayette High School cheerleaders! Thumbs up all the way, girls!

I most publicly thank Tidewater Physical Therapy on Ironbound Road. Recently, I fell face down in their parking lot. Within three minutes, five of them rushed out to help and I was bleeding profusely from the mouth, nose. They went to work, helping me—packed my nose with gauze. Others brought towels to get the blood off of me. They located my purse and items, took care of that. I was just in an ambulance, but they stayed with me until I was okay. Later at MD Express, they, too, were very kind. I'm very grateful to all. Thank you.

I just wanted to send a special thank you to the staff of Lowe's in Williamsburg. I was there recently and instead of waiting for help to load a large piece of wood, I tried doing it myself and ended up needing first aid outside on my foot. The managers and staff were so caring and assisted me with caring for my injury and keeping my daughter entertained as well. Thank you very much.
