Making it easy to help with the Last Word, Nov. 25

The Virginia Gazette

Do you need ...

I'd like to donate a mattress and box spring—it's queen size— to anyone that's in need, for free. My number is 757-565-1730. Thank you.

Poor behavior

Recently, my daughter came home from school and said the principal came into her classroom and fussed at the teacher with them sitting there. I didn't think that was right. It was very unprofessional. I just want to know what you all think. May I have some feedback, please? Thank you.

Easy to help

I want to thank Farm Fresh for making it so easy for me to feed the hungry year round. First thing in my cart is a pre-packaged, $5 bag of food for the Foodbank. Sometimes my own funds are stretched, but I always offer this. It makes me sad to think of someone going hungry and I just bought something I don't really need, just want. So, thank you, Farm Fresh, bell ringers, and all those who raise funds for the unfortunate. You make it possible for folks like me to give.

Road responsibility

The majority of bike riders on the trail are not obeying the stop signs at entrances to the communities along Route 5. At some the sight lines are good, but others, like the entrance to my community, have plantings which block the view of the multi-use trail as one enters or leaves. This has resulted in bike or car collisions and numerous near misses, plus several verbal altercations with bike riders who refused to obey the stop signs. County police need to step in before someone is seriously injured and the innocent driver is left with the guilt of having, through no fault of their own, injured someone. A recent collision with one of these scofflaws thankfully resulted in no injuries, but hundreds of dollars in needed repairs to one of our vehicles. When asked for ID, the bike rider refused and rode away!

Refugees

Isn't it curious that there are hundreds of thousands of these Syrian refugees attempting to reach Western countries – but I don't see any lines of refugees lined up at the borders of Jordan, the Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Pakistan, Yemen or even Iraq and Iran? Only our ally Turkey seems to have shouldered their share of this tragedy. Why doesn't CNN or MSNBC find that an odd news item and investigate?

I will believe the Federal Government when it says, "All Syrian refugees will be fully vetted before they are allowed into America" when the Federal Government publicly announces that every such refugee will be offered the opportunity to choose to settle in Washington, D.C!

A few days ago, five Syrians were apprehended in the capitol airport of Honduras with false Greek passports. They traveled by air from Syria to Lebanon, then to Turkey, Brazil, Argentina, Costa Rica and to Honduras. They were going to go overland to Guatemala, Mexico, into the U.S. There's a lot of money behind them for five tickets to the above itinerary. There's no way to vet these young men. Call your congressmen and senators to increase security in the Mexican border and tell them we want no Syrians in this country! It's a matter of national security and the security of every American!! Thank you.

Executive orders

The Nov. 18 callers complaining about the Executive Orders issued by President Obama, in what appears to be yet another attempt to delegitimize his presidency by implying some unprecedented illegal abuse of power, should do a little simple research. According to The Federal Register, Mr. Obama's to-date 225 EOs pale in comparison to previous presidents, regardless of party: Bush '43 (291), Clinton (364), Reagan (381), Carter (320), Nixon (346), LBJ (325), Eisenhower (484), and the list continues. Try dealing in facts and perhaps you'll pass Civics 101.

Hunting season

Looking forward to hunting season but I do have a question. If I shoot a buck, but I only have a doe tag, can I claim that the buck wasn't really a buck? I mean … maybe he'd always wanted to be a doe, but with no choice of his own he was born with the physical attributes of a male. And yet … on the inside he'd always known he was truly a female. I'm just wondering if the game warden will buy it, because society and the Supreme Court do.

Road work

VDOT is now proposing a roundabout at the intersection of News Road and Centerville to improve traffic flow and safety. This approach is the most expensive alternative, uses the most amount of acreage to install taking property away from landowners on this corner and will impede traffic flow. As one of a few roundabouts in James City County a roundabout slows traffic flow and has the potential to cause more accidents. The problem at News and Centerville is visibility due to the hillside that blocks the view of traffic and the scrub on the opposite corner. VDOT needs to cut the hillside back and clear the scrub. If necessary, put in turning lanes on News and Centerville roads but this is another boondoggle to waste limited funds as is the other end of News Road which will take another year to complete because very little effort or manpower is there to complete the effort.

Stop calling

To the person having to endure unwanted calls, I have found a way to stop robo calls. It's a free service called NoMoRobo. Here is the website for more info http://www.nomorobo.com. Now when they dial me my phone rings once, then *poof* gone! Where it goes, I don't know and I don't care. Spread the word!

Biggest danger

Perhaps President Obama and Secretary Kerry should remind people in France (and Mali) that climate change is the biggest danger facing the world today.

Stay Colonial

I am a been in Williamsburg for over 35 years and have never been so embarrassed for the people who live here. Williamsburg will never be New York City's Rockefeller Center with putting in an ice skating rink or Washington, D.C., with the lighting of the important buildings at night. It seems the new president of CW has big ideas for a small town. Keep Williamsburg as colonial as it was in the beginning. As for the new municipal building, never such a total disregard for city rules and regulation. The new city manager and CW president need to think "Keep Williamsburg as it was during the beginning." That is what has drawn people to this quaint town.

Stryker building

So many people are in agreement with the recent comment in the Last Word calling the new Stryker Building "a failure." Those of us who remember the honorable Mayor H.M. Stryker know he was not nor should his name and memory ever be associated with anything deemed a "failure." He does deserve to be honored and, therefore, why not name the public green space "Stryker Green" or "Stryker Park"? Then simply call the "new" building "City Hall."

Cell phones

Attention, all shoppers: Please turn your cell phones off when you're entering a retail establishment. You're being very rude to the sales associates who are trying to assist you and also to your fellow shoppers. Your personal conversations can wait until you leave the store.

Too small to read

Why is it that businesses post the times that they are open in the front door, but the lettering is small that you have to get out of your car, walk up to the door and squint to read the time? Doesn't make sense to me. And also, why is it that most commercial people—not most but a lot—have people answering the phone that have difficulty speaking the English language? And I say that not to be smart, but I have difficulty with it. Thank you.

Compliments to DMV

The DMV people often come in for adverse criticism. This is a plus for them. Yesterday I visited them and was very pleased with their service. They were courteous, they helped me, completed a complicated transaction following the death of my wife and the need to change the title and handicapped plates. And I just think that they deserve to get credit when they do a good job.

Looking for ...

I'm looking for an upscale brunch for Sunday afternoon.

Is hair stylist Milena T. still practicing her skill in the Williamsburg area? I knew her last at Jim D's. I am anxious to find her.

About three weeks ago, a writer to the Last Word asked for help on neuropathy and the pains for it. There is a doctor who ran a half-page ad in the Daily Press with his phone number specialized in that. "Peripheral neuropathy can be treated," it says. Call 757-229-6069. Dr. Kuhn. Thank you.

A non-profit religious group is looking for a free to low-cost place for 20 people to meet on a weekly basis for 1 hour on Sundays. Time of day flexible. Please respond by leaving a brief message at 804-210-6989. Thank you in advance.

Save a life

Always be aware of your surroundings, and the life you save may be your own. Have a blessed day.

Traffic laws

I have tremendous respect for our law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal level and recognize the difficult and often dangerous work they do. That said, I do question why our local law enforcement are permitted to cherry pick state traffic laws for enforcement. When was the last time a turn signal or stop sign violation was cited, when if ever has an officer actually ticketed a person for texting, an illegal U-turn, seat belt violation, failure to use headlights, or a mechanical violation? If these traffic laws are no longer enforced, how about our senior leaders in law enforcement informing the public? Next point we expect our law enforcement officers to enforce all of the laws. The uniform and badge does not exempt them from obeying these very same traffic laws.

Circus politics

Robert Reich's editorial on 'The Perils of Circus Politics' seemed like a tongue-in-cheek piece of work. He talks about how the media used to scrutinize the candidates and evaluate their policy proposals, etc. He attacks Presidential candidates Donald Trump, Ben Carson, and Carly Fiorina. Yet where was the media to scrutinize Obama's policy proposals? Did he even have any? Reich states electoral success depends on showmanship and self-promotion. Isn't this what we learned from that community organizer and one-term Senator from Illinois? The media has created this new circus of politics. What happened to the media? And why has it become political? The media used to be the fourth branch of control in our country, keeping watch over our elected officials. Look at it now, only one media outlet out of many is always attacked and vilified. Yet that is the one trying to do what the media used to do. One of the group of candidates Reich called clowns, may end up elected because the media did not do its job for the past seven years. And I may vote for one!
