A kindness acknowledged, Last Word Feb. 6

The Virginia Gazette
Michigan governor wants federal government to pick up Flint health costs, but a reader doesn't like that

Fallout from Flint

Late news tonight says that the governor of Michigan has asked the U.S. government to cover the long-term healthcare costs of the children of Flint. Since the crisis was caused by the cold calculation that by switching water supplies to save $5 million over a 3-year period came from the governor's office and not from the federal government, while I feel the problem there is tragic, I do not feel that it the responsibility of the U.S. government to carry the costs of the governor's penny wise, pound foolish decision. That should be left up to the state of Michigan.

The Golden Rule

If your job is to take care of old people, always help each person with kindness and consideration. Never sound like you are bossing them. Some day you, too, will be old and feeble. Take time to treat others the way you would want to be treated and God will bless you.

Gun safety

It is unfortunate that a young businessman died of a self-inflicted wound at a local restaurant; it is fortunate, however, that no employees or customers were injured in the incident. The employee present at the time of the shooting reported that the restaurateur was inexperienced with guns. I'd like to know how many other "inexperienced" restaurant and business managers or owners in Williamsburg are packing guns. For the safety of employees and customers, authorities should investigate gun-packing businesses in Williamsburg and ensure that each person carrying a concealed weapon has gone through a concealed carry course and is in possession of a legal permit to carry.

Stryker building

Williamsburg is very regulatory when it comes to the appearance of private and commercial architecture. Everything has to be in keeping with the approved style concept. If a private company wanted to build a building that looks like the Stryker building, it would not be allowed. It seems like the standards do not apply to public buildings, which is clear nonsense.

Thank you

We want to thank the jogger on Patrick Henry Drive, Jan. 20, around 3:30. [When we were] returning home from hip surgery, he assisted my husband getting me up the steps and safely into the house. God bless you.

We'll miss Wittman

The person who currently represents the 2nd District is Rob Wittman, and I can assure you that he is accessible. Besides frequently working from an office in Yorktown, he shops at stores in Williamsburg. I have spoken with him several times when he had stopped by to purchase something on his way home, and he always stops to listen and then discuss what's on my mind. He's what office-holders were intended to be when we created our federal government. I'm sorry that some of us will be losing him.

CW cutbacks

Can anyone explain Colonial Williamsburg's latest move to "prune" several dozen mid-level managers since one of them was Lance Pedigo, longtime manager of Fifes & Drums? Surely there is no appreciation for the complexity of this music education program. A hundred middle and high schoolers confidently perform in small and large groups to support literally hundreds of special programs each year. The learning of numerous tunes, the testing, rehearsals, scheduling, tracking of paid hours, maintenance of equipment, and everything else make it an absolute Rubik's Cube. Fifes & Drums was already down by one of its three salaried staff members and now it has lost its leader. A hundred sets of parents, many hundred alumni, and a host of locals are now asking: Is CW leadership clueless?

Clean air

Seeing the black — ugh — covered snow and ice along our main streets, the same streets run by many avid area residents, I wonder if it isn't worthwhile to have our scientifically inclined residents figure out how to monitor the air they breathe in along Jamestown Road, Richmond and maybe Monticello between Richmond and Ironbound. Shouldn't learning the particulates in the air breathed be of serious interest to runners? Anyone ready to take this on?

Unstable economy

Since the Federal Reserve raised interest rates from record lows last month, the global picture has darkened. Stock markets have plunged, oil prices have skidded. China's leaders have struggled to steer the world's second biggest economy. Did the Fed err in raising rates for the first time in nearly a decade? People are just scared right now — that was a comment from a former Fed staff economist, David Wyss. It isn't just China. Europe hasn't solved its problems. We have rifts in the Middle East and in the United States there is a lack of confidence. The most visible sign of economic fear has been the stock market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed more than 7 percent of its value in the first three weeks of 2016 and fell another 1.3 percent on Monday. Perhaps the Fed will acknowledge that global economic conditions have deteriorated since their December meeting, but maybe they will say that the US economic conditions have not changed, which is not the truth.

Cable service

To the caller about Cox cable in Saturday's Last Word: The best solution that you have right now is to contact your local supervisor of the Board of Supervisors and also Mr. Hill, who is the county manager. The more people that's involved in the county that are having concerns about their Cox Communications, there will be some answers to it in the committee meeting. That's my best solution to you.

Good luck!

Yes, I would like to commend my newspaper delivery people, Richard and Angel. They are the best that we have ever had. They're leaving us and they're going to be sorely missed. Good luck.

Power lines

Great article in your paper the other day about the current situation with Dominion's proposal. Folks, wake up. As the author pointed out, new alternatives will require a lengthy approval process. And, you can bet whatever alternative they select will be fiercely opposed. This is beginning to smell like the King William Reservoir. Millions expended, nothing to show for it, looming problem with no solutions. Fortunately I have the resources to ensure I have reliable power, but many do not. Time to stop letting the radicals have their way to our detriment.

Dominion has stated that the "Peninsula" faces rolling blackouts. The biggest users on the Peninsula are Newport News and Hampton. JCC/York usage is inconsequential compared to those cities. There are existing transmission lines across the James at Newport News. The obvious solution is to use the existing right of way and increase the capacity to the two cities that use most of the power.

There are 28 public and private power companies that serve Virginia. Dominion does not even service most of Surry where their nuclear plant is located. Obviously, Dominion wants to run short lines from their plant into this service area to save them money in transmission costs, but they may benefit more from swapping some service areas with other providers. This improves disaster response and overall operational efficiency.

The Woman's Club of Williamsburg is collecting used and broken crayons for The Crayon Initiative. Don't throw away your used crayons; the wax in crayons isn't biodegradable and it collects in landfills. Collecting crayons is a great school or Scouting project for kids who want to help other kids. Restaurants, schools, churches, day care centers and individuals with crayons to donate can contact the club by email at womansclubofwilliamsburg.org. The crayons are sent to The Crayon Initiative, which remanufactures them for hospitals so that hospitalized children can have fun with normal childhood skills and find relief from anxiety and psychological stress.

I am terrified of the dentist. Does anyone have any recommendations for a dentist that has Twilight Therapy and can do different work plus dentist? Thank you.

If anyone has a travel guide to China and a translator they no longer want, please call 565-0075. Thank you.

Recommendations, please, for the best psychiatrist in Williamsburg who works with adolescents. Thank you.

Recommended

I am a recently retired physician, who has lived in the Williamsburg area for 35 years. I have had many dealings with healthcare providers, both professionally and as a patient throughout the Hampton Roads and greater Richmond areas. I can say, without hesitation, that I have had no better experiences than the ones with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Williamsburg. Dr. Paul Hartmann and his staff are extremely courteous, professional, and highly skilled. I feel lucky that he decided to provide his level of service for so many years to a small market community such as ours.

I'd like to thank Jeff and Autumn from Williamsburg Pet Loss. They were so sweet and kind with my cat that I lost, of many, many years. Thank you and God bless them.

If you need good home health care service, I strongly recommend Brookside at McLaws Circle. Mary, Evie, Brook, Amy and Mandy are all outstanding and a credit to the nursing profession. Thank you, ladies, for a job well done.

On a recent Sunday my wife and I saw the play "Kiss Me, Kate." It was a totally student production at William and Mary. We were delighted at the outstanding performance. I have seen many plays in my life in NYC but there is something very special about student productions. Brush up your Shakespeare.

Roundabouts

If you have ever lived in New Jersey, you would be opposed to the proposed construction of a roundabout at the intersection of News and Centerville roads. In addition to the obvious expense, they can be dangerous, especially to drivers who are not familiar with the best way to enter a roundabout and then how to exit from a lane other than the one they are in. Because of frequent accidents, I know of one roundabout which was eliminated. It was replaced by a simple intersection with "old-fashioned" traffic lights.

Diverse candidates

With so many liberals in Hollywood and in the media complaining about the lack of minorities who nominated for Oscars, why aren't any of them complaining about the lack of minorities running for President representing the Democratic party?

Blaming the president

Per the President Obama article referencing the Second Amendment: It's really time to stop using the Second Amendment in order to own or carry a gun. I am a Vietnam vet. Do you know what it's really like to kill someone? A vast majority of you who own or carry a gun would wet your pants if someone drew a gun on you and fired but missed just to see your reaction. The next time you go hunting, give a deer a gun and let him or her shoot back. As for President Obama, folks have blamed this man for just about everything bad that has happened to America. Why don't you blame him for sending Americans boys overseas to look for weapons of mass destruction? Of course not! Because you know who started this mess. Meanwhile, we have created a lot of casualties like 'Nam. But yet President Obama is blamed for nearly every miserable thing that happens to the U.S. I wonder why? Did I mention that I am a black Vietnam vet.

President Obama takes a vacation once a year to Hawaii, his home state. Given the intense job he holds, I think he deserves it. George W. Bush, if I remember, who owns a ranch in Texas, his home state, traveled there on Air Force One at taxpayers' expense at least every two to three months. Does this reader just have memory problems or were they just being mean, as I suspect? Thank you.

School payroll

Your kids are paying the price! Bus drivers can't buy tissue, hand sanitizer or Lysol! With pay changes we can't even supply our own homes! Yes if your child asks their drivers for these things, know that it is not given to them [because they would have to] buy it with their own money! Kids are standing out at bus stops longer. Drivers don't want to help because of [the] pay change that saves the guys sitting in offices while we, as drivers struggle to make it, working other night jobs that cause [us] not to get [the] proper amount of sleep! FYI: We're still waiting on them to tell us just how much it's really saving!

Three Stooges

To the caller who compared Sarah Palin to Moe Howard: Would you please quantify your remark with some facts? People seem to love making fun of Sarah Palin, but they rarely have any evidence as to why she is such a bad person.

This is in reference to the person stating an endorsement from Sarah Palin was like an endorsement from Moe Howard of the Three Stooges. Actually, the Three Stooges are all running for the Democratic nomination. Thank you.

In a recent Last Word under the heading, "Some endorsement," the person making a terrible remark about Sarah Palin, indicating that it was like she was like Moe Howard of the Three Stooges: Well, the only thing I can say is the person who made this particular comment is like Larry of the Three Stooges. Thank you.
