Time for tests
To pass the CDL, I would go online for the free practice tests for truck driving and for bus driving. You are only allowed to take the test three times at the DMV; then you have to take a week-long class to be able to take the test again. If you fail, study the answers of the failed questions at the end of the DMV computerized test. Some people prefer taking the test with a pencil and paper. Good luck!
Just like spring, SOLs are right around the corner. Unfortunately, the SOLs are not nearly as good for the spirit as spring. Worksheets abound and creative thinking is taking a back seat to rote learning. I, for one, am tired of the entire spring being spent on reviewing for these tests. Spring is a time for exploring the outside, learning about nature and renewing our love for learning. Instead, our kids are inside completing worksheets and reviewing facts. When will we stand up for our children and help them see there is so much more to learning?
Role of the state
States and or cites should not be able to preempt federal law, based on constitutional rights. When [we are] traveling throughout the U.S. [we find that] each state and some cities have their own gun laws. It is confusing for the traveler who has a canceled handgun permit. Hopefully, when a Republican is elected President, the Constitution will again apply to all locations throughout the U.S.A.
'Over the top' security
To the person who was unhappy about the security procedures he/she felt were "Over the Top" during a visit to the Social Security office, I offer a different perspective. I also had that experience, but in today's world, I'm more than happy to know that a business or office that I need to visit is concerned enough about safety of clients and staff that they provide tighter security. My credit union now has guards at each branch, sometimes requiring a guard to open the door for patrons. Everyone wants quick efficient service, but we need to understand that stricter procedures are implemented for a reason. Possibly the Social Security office can implement a procedure for walk-up outside service on items that can be completed in a short amount of time. Offer constructive suggestions if you have any.
Thank you Sue
Big shout out to Sue in collections at Langley Federal Credit Union for her professionalism and compassion. Due to a heart attack in 2014, all of my accounts with Langley fell behind. Disability dragged its feet and left me in financial ruins. Sue worked with me to keep my accounts out of collection and help me stay out of repossession of my vehicle. She was always courteous and treated me with dignity while guiding me through the toughest time of my life. It is because of Sue's dedication and treatment of my situation that drives me to bank with no one else other than Langley.
Thank you for the message from the owner of the used bookstore. The used bookstore is a wonderful resource in Williamsburg, and my thoughts and prayers are with the owner in her recovery. I hope she gets well soon and is able to return and open the store. I wish her the best.
I'm just wondering how many people got a phone call like I did, just before five o'clock today. It was (and I'm quoting) a "phone notice from IRS, Internal Revenue Service. The reason for this call is to inform you that IRS is filing a lawsuit against you. To get more information about this, please call. Please call immediately on Department No. 312-924-7681. Thank you." But the weird thing was, on my caller id, it said "Trump Chicago. 1-312-924-7681." Just wondering. Bye.
Remember when the American people got snookered by the stimulus bill that was going to have "shovel-ready jobs for all the roads and bridges that needed to be fixed"? We had to pay for an increase in the deficit for that. So, why then, is Anthony Fox, the secretary of transportation, testifying in front of Congress today, that the roads in the country have not been fixed and they are in desperate need. Obviously, the money didn't go to fixing the roads that are in desperate need of being fixed and the bridges and the transportation system.
What has happened to several of our older neighborhoods in the City of Williamsburg? I see peeling paint, lawns and yards that have not been raked and cleaned up in two years, and old junker cars sitting in driveways. If you are elderly or need help, contact some of your younger neighbors for assistance—many of us would be happy to help to keep our neighborhoods looking good!
If Donald Trump is elected president, how will he balance the budget for the nation if he can't even balance his own budget? Will he file bankruptcy for the nation?
If the Republican Party is going to nominate Trump, they should rename their party "The Brown Shirt Party."
I keep seeing the same conservative drivel concerning the FBI and Clinton. Conservatives have devoted millions and many years trying desperately to defame, dehumanize and try to tie her to criminal activities. Results nada, zip, bupkis nothing. I take that back. In the little minds of hard core conservatives it is all right there. Just like 28% of all registered Republicans knowing the president is a non-citizen.
I wanted to thank Jenny at Nails Uptown and Hair Uptown. The last few months have been a dream come true! Going to work happy every day, doing what I love, in a happy healthy environment and working for one of the best businesswomen in Williamsburg. It just doesn't get any better!

Can anyone let me know when is the best time in this area to put out our hummingbird feeders? Thank you.
To the poster who blamed the "Dummycrats" for interfering with his/her ability to obtain high proof alcohol. How ironic. Your wording leads me to believe you would be inclined to obstruct a woman's right to choose what she does with her own body, or people different from you to choose the person they want to marry. Those are issues thousands of times more important than your alcohol, yet I imagine you see nothing wrong with imposing your will on those other people. Not new, but still ironic.
A bottle of wine broke in my mother's trunk of her car, and Mega Auto Spa did a wonderful job cleaning everything up. They did truly above and beyond and they were really wonderful.
I just had my hardwood floors sanded and refinished, and I am so pleased to share with you the name of the company, if you are also interested. He was courteous, prompt, reasonable and finished the job as promised. I highly recommend his services. Darren and Peggy Blair, Blair's Hardwood Floors, right here in Williamsburg, 757-345-6478.
To those who have not taken a class in Gentle Flow Yoga or someone looking for classes: I highly recommend Shomer's, at the Laughing Buddha. He is also well known for his classes in meditation. He is gentle man who went to India to study meditation.
Thanks to Tom Bigford of Digitize My Images for the remarkable job he did digitizing, restoring, and organizing 343 photos and then creating a wonderful sentimental memorial video of my late husband's life (1940-2009). Tom was able to work his magic almost entirely via the internet. His telephone number is (757) 645-7004 and his e-mail is tbigford @cox.net.
Reference to the article, "Environmental official receives gifts from Dominion." Mr. Paylor, director of the VDEQ, seems to have acted like the Flint, Michigan, drinking water disaster officials. We citizens expect those in government positions to be honest, trustworthy, looking out for the best interests of those they serve. Government employees have fantastic benefits, paid vacations, awesome retirement, incredible life and health insurance and leave time. Then there are those, many of us who have no retirement or health insurance and are expected to buy and save for ourselves. It's time local, state and federal employees start respecting those they are to serve.
Remember the true meaning of Easter. It's not just chocolate bunnies and jellybeans. Joy and blessings to all.
Needs your prayers
I would encourage everyone to pray for Todd Palin. He is the husband of Sarah Palin, the former governor of Alaska, and also pray for Todd Palin's family, to comfort them. This is very important. Prayer is very important in one's life. Thank you.
Now the NRA is even choosing new members of the Supreme Court. This week they published their opposition to Merrick Garland, a proposal hard to beat. Naturally this will fortify the do-nothing Republican opposition even more, as they are totally in the NRA's pocket. Good grief. This is a new low in our nation's politics.
I have been very pleased with the new and exciting things that President Reiss has introduced to CW — Halloween, ice rink, underground lights in the historic area. I am very disappointed that he is now taking away something that has been here for years, lawn bowling behind the Inn. I do not bowl, but I enjoy walking there and watching. I have even seen wedding groups come out and watch. Lawn bowling was around in colonial days. Please do not start taking away things that have been a part of CW for years.
We have been so impressed with the calm thoughtfulness of JCC supervisors Hipple and Onizuk in their methodical approach to county issues. How refreshing that they ask questions, choose to work cooperatively, don't accept standard replies to important questions. Thank you, gentlemen, for bringing civility and cooperation to the Board and concerning yourselves with the long-term situation of the country, not just your re-election.
I read with interests the comments regarding the national debt. True, all presidents have added to the National Debt except Clinton, but Obama has indebted us the most with more than 6.4 trillion dollars. He has indebted our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and they will curse us for it.
In response to who creates debt, the Democrats or the Republicans: All we have to do is look at this last Democrat, who created more debt in seven years—actually, in less than seven years, in four years—than all of the previous presidents in the history of the United States. And there are more unemployed people than since the Great Depression And minorities are doing worse now than they were in the 60s. So, that's the real reality, and I am a minority. I can look back and be honest about this and not just say what I want it to be. But those are facts.
Looking for ...
If you are the lady who bought two large planters from the first two tables inside the door at the Ford's Colony garage sale on Saturday, I have your planters. If you will call me at 258-0460, I will arrange to get them to you. You bought them and then forgot to pick them up. Thank you.
Could someone direct me to a good school of dance for my three year old in the Williamsburg area? Thank you.
I'm old and I'm shrinking. I didn't realize how much it cost to get pants hemmed. Any ideas on who's reasonable?
Are there any young (20s through 30's ages) groups or persons that meet for tea or chats that have moved here from England? Please call 757 229-0306.
I am an active middle-aged woman with rheumatoid arthritis and other related health issues. In the last three years, my doctors have quadrupled my prescription medicine, including medications for anxiety and depression brought on by some of those very medications. Lack of sleep is addressed with another pill instead of investigating the cause. I know the current healthcare situation limits the time doctors have with a patient, but at some point it becomes an excuse to push patients through without putting in the work. Are there any doctors in the Hampton Roads area that will investigate their patient's issues before reaching for their prescription pad?
I'm looking for someone who wants to play day-time bridge. You have an ad in the Last Word but no phone number. I wonder if I could get that phone number? My name is Kathleen, and my phone number is 258-1508. Thank you so much.
Does anyone know if the EEE Resource center is closed? I was so hoping to get several more big items washed. They did a wonderful job on previous items.
