It is refreshing to read that Williamsburg-James City County schools superintendent Dr. Olwen Herron is opening direct communication between the classroom teachers and the central office (Virginia Gazette, Feb. 7). Dr. Herron has more teaching experience than most superintendents today. She knows that teachers are in the best position to understand the needs of their students.
I earned my Virginia teaching certificate in 1970. It was a far different profession than it is today. Decision-making has been transferred from the classroom teachers and their schools to bureaucrats at all government levels. This has been a big mistake.
I am optimistic that our new superintendent is on the right track. I hope we will continue to get updates from her on what is working, as well as what is not. Transparency is essential to good communication and understanding.
