The mayor of Denver calls his hurt leg an "injury." The mayor of Baltimore calls it an "excuse."
Addressing the pressing issues of our time, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake on Wednesday took issue with Denver Mayor Michael Hancock's postponement of his performance of linebacker Ray Lewis' signature dance.
"There are many that feel that this is a way for him to get out of the obligation he made publicly prior to the game," Rawlings-Blake said. "I just think it’s interesting that there was so much trash talking before the game. Now there are a lot of excuses."
After losing a bet over the outcome of the Ravens-Broncos playoff game, Hancock was supposed to perform Lewis' signature pregame dance Tuesday. Instead, the mayor showed up with a limp. His spokeswoman said Hancock "seriously strained his quad" at a National Western Stock Show event Monday. The Ravens defeated the Broncos, 38-35, in an instant classic Saturday night, featuring a last-minute Hail Mary pass from quarterback Joe Flacco to wide receiver Jacoby Jones. Baltimore now advances to play New England for the AFC championship on Sunday.
Due to the loss, Hancock also must now send east a box of dry aged “cowboy cut” rib eye steaks from Lombardi Brothers Meats.
"I really like Mayor Hancock," Rawlings-Blake said Wednesday. "I certainly hope he has not been injured. ... I’m still looking for the steaks."
Rawlings-Blake had promised to light Baltimore’s historic Washington Monument in blue and orange Broncos colors and send to Denver a platter of broiled crab cakes from J. W. Faidley Seafood had the Broncos won.
The Ravens (12-6) will face the host Patriots (13-4) at 6:30 p.m. Sunday for a chance to advance to the Super Bowl.
For that game, Rawlings-Blake will again wager Faidley's crab cakes, but also stuffed cabbage and kruschiki from Sophie's Place in Broadway Market; a gourmet fruit salad from Kay's Produce in Lexington Market; and an order of Berger Cookies.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has placed on the line a variety of foods available in Boston’s Farmers’ Markets: seafood from Red’s Best Seafood and side dishes from CropCircle Kitchen, Alex’s Ugly Hot Sauce, Deborah’s Kitchen Jams, Nella Pasta, Vianne Chocolate, and Whoopie Monsters’ Whoopie Pies.
"The New England Patriots can be assured that the AFC Championship will be a most uncomfortable home game, and a defeat they will not soon forget," Rawlings-Blake said in a statement.
