Ravens bar of the week: Kisling's Tavern
Kisling's offers no frills, just great wings and beer
Kisling's Tavern has seven TVs in the downstairs bar, and specializes in wings. (Alexis Jenkins, Baltimore Sun / September 25, 2012)
Walk into the Canton spot on any given night and you'll likely see a mix of social sports league teams, old-time regulars and satisfied chicken-wing lovers. Kisling's takes its wings seriously, offering more than a dozen flavors, ranging from Asian Ginger to Honey Dijon. But first-timers should start with the original flavor (discounted to $7.99 on Sundays after 5 p.m.), arguably the best wings in the city. (You don't name your website baltimoresbestwings.com unless you're confident in your product.)
For Sunday's Ravens game, Kisling's will serve National Bohemian bottles for $2.50 and the 16-ounce Boh tallboys for $3. There will also be Ravens Bombs (Three Olives Grape vodka and Red Bull) for $5. As always, the bar will serve Orange Crushes and Bloody Marys for $4 all day. While those deals are pretty standard, Kisling's offers an above-average beer list. With more than 50 kinds of beer in bottles and 12 drafts (including Harpoon's UFO Pumpkin Ale and three other seasonal choices), Kisling's will likely have a beer to suit your mood.
Drinks: Classically Baltimore, Kisling's Sunday specials are discounted Natty Bohs ($2.50 bottles/$3 tall-cans) and Ravens Bombs ($5).
Food: Kisling's is known for its meaty wings, but there's really no going wrong if you're in the mood for heavy bar grub. The Kisling's cheese steak ($10.99) packs 10 ounces of beef, grilled onions, lettuce, mayonnaise and hot peppers into a sub roll. The steamed mussels ("Bertha's Who!" reads the menu) are 25 to 30 per order for $10.99.
Atmosphere: This is the type of bar where you can show up in gym shorts and a T-shirt, and no one will blink an eye. It's endearingly no-nonsense, which makes it an ideal place to sit back with a cold beer and watch the game.
Parking: Free on the street.
