Hampton University point guard Deron Powers, who has started 94 games in three seasons, said Tuesday he plans to transfer.

Powers said he hopes to choose his next school by July. After sitting out a year in accordance with NCAA rules, he would have one season of eligibility remaining.

“Honestly, I want to play for a better program,” Powers said. “I’m definitely up for anything, and it doesn’t have to be at the highest level. There are a lot of good programs I wouldn’t mind going to, but I am looking for a higher-profile team that needs a point guard.”

Powers averaged 10.1 points and a team-leading 3.8 assists last season despite playing with ankle and heel problems. He had eight points and seven assists in HU’s NCAA tournament win over Manhattan. The Pirates exited the tournament with a loss to overall No. 1 seed Kentucky.

In three seasons, Powers has 1,080 points and 395 assists. His assist total is fifth among HU’s career leaders. He started the first 75 games of his career.

Powers is the leading all-time scorer at Williamsburg Christian Academy, which he led to the VISAA Division III state championship as a senior.

HU coach Edward Joyner declined comment Tuesday.
