JAMES CITY — Grafton kept its postseason hopes alive, shutting down Jamestown in a 24-0 win at Wanner Stadium on Friday.
Dylan Bartells rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown to lead the Clippers (4-5, 4-4 Bay Rives District). Jesse Santiago added 103 yards on seven carries.
After a scoreless first half, Grafton coach Jared Van Acker's team found paydirt on its second possession of the third quarter, thanks to some big plays. Santiago and Bartells posted back-to-back 12-yard runs to soften up Jamestown's defense.
Quarterback Evan Sperling hooked up with Marcus Spearman on a 32-yard back-shoulder fade to give the Clippers first-and-goal from the 4. Two plays later, Sperling rolled to his right, drawing the defense in, and lofted a pass to Bryan Mitchell alone in the back of the end zone for the first score of the game. Brian Anderson's extra point gave Grafton a 7-0 lead.
Jamestown (4-5, 5-4) fumbled on its ensuing possession and Spearman recovered on the Eagles' 27. The Clippers moved inside the 5, but had to settle for Anderson's 25-yard field goal with 11:03 left in the game.
The Eagles tried to answer as Trayvon Brion returned the ensuing kickoff 44 yards to give them a first down at Grafton's 48. The momentum shifted three plays later as Ryan Hiser made a great one-handed interception off Tyler Doane's pass intended for Braxton Miller at the Grafton 25.
Santiago's 45-yard gain on a reverse set up Spearman's 1-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 17-0 with 8:12 left.
Jamestown continued to move the ball on the ground as Daivon Turner opened the drive with 35 yards. The Eagles completed a pass to the 19, but the Grafton defense forced a fumble and Tyrell Noel recovered. Two big runs from Santiago and Bartells set up a 5-yard touchdown run by Bartells for a 24-0 lead with 4:32 left.
Turner rushed 23 times for 97 yards to lead Jamestown. He needs just 11 yards to reach the 1,000-yard plateau.
