YORK - Lafayette High remained in second place in the Bay Rivers District on Saturday with a thrilling 15-7 win over Grafton at Bailey Field. The Rams (4-1, 3-1) held on as Blake Guminsky intercepted a Grafton pass at the goal line — on third and-2 at the Lafayette 2 — with 29 seconds remaining in the game.
The Lafayette defense allowed just 12 yards until late in the third quarter, when the Grafton offense caught fire. But the Clippers (2-3, 2-2) managed just one score — on PJ Jackson's 2-yard pass to Jesse Santiago — early in the fourth quarter.
A dropped pass on fourth down at the Rams' 23 and the late interception derailed two promising drives by Grafton in the fourth quarter.
Neither team scored in a penalty-plagued first quarter in which the teams were hit for a combined eight flags. The Rams began to take control late in the first quarter, when they launched a 12-play 66-yard drive mostly on the ground.
Jahlil Green ran four times for 21 yards on the drive, capped by quarterback Brendan McGinty's 2-yard touchdown sneak that made it 6-0 with 9:34 left in the first half. The Rams increased their lead to 12-0 in the second quarter, as McGinty finished a 47-yard drive with a 22-yard touchdown run.
Parker Kindley blocked a Grafton punt to give the Rams the ball at the Grafton 36 late in the first half. That led to Alex Webb's 38 yard field goal that gave the Rams a 15-0 lead at intermission.
Kindley and Darren Patton led a Lafayette defense that limited Grafton to just 7 yards total offense the first two quarters.
