Previews for Friday's high school football playoff games

6A South Region/Conferences 1-2 second round

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Todd Stadium.

THE BUZZ: No. 3 seed Woodside hosts its second round playoff game after No. 7 seed Grassfield upset No. 2 seed Cox in the first round. The home game and higher seed should give the Wolverines the upper hand. In the 2015 playoffs, though, they lost to the Grizzlies in a similar situation. In that game, Woodside allowed 34 points to Grassfield. If they can cut that in half, they should make it to the third round.

THE PICK: Woodside 28-14.

5A South Region/Conferences 9-10 second round

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Darling Stadium.

THE BUZZ: Hampton senior Dazz Newsome has scored 33 touchdowns in 11 games this season, including four against first-round opponent Warwick last Friday. Still, the No. 1 seed Crabbers led just 17-12 at halftime. Against No. 4 seed Indian River, the team that ousted Hampton from last year's playoffs, the Crabbers will try for a more lopsided first half.

THE PICK: Hampton 35-21.

4A East Region/Conferences 17-18 second round

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Lake Taylor High.

THE BUZZ: The No. 3 seed Hurricanes held their first-round opponent scoreless in the second half last Saturday. The Heritage defense will need to stand strong again against No. 2 seed Lake Taylor. The Hurricanes handed the Titans their only loss of the season 35-21 on Aug. 26, but Lake Taylor has not scored less than 27 points in any game since then.

THE PICK: Lake Taylor 28-21.

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Wanner Stadium.

THE BUZZ: The No. 1 Rams won the regular season meeting 50-18 in a fashion that makes it difficult to see No. 4 Grafton pulling off the kind of upset they did in rallying for 21-consecutive fourth-quarter points to beat Smithfield 30-27 in the first round. Grafton hung tough for the first 18 minutes, but Lafayette, never let up just as they did not turning back challenges from Smithfield and Poquoson.

THE PICK: Lafayette 35-10.

3A East Region/Conferences 25-27 second round

TABB (7-4) AT LAKELAND (6-5)

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Lakeland High in Suffolk.

THE BUZZ: Tabb's last playoff victory was over Lakeland in 1993. Duplicating the feat will be difficult despite the fact the No. 7 Tigers are playing well and feature a balanced offense. As deep and talented as the Tigers are at the skill position, No. 3 Lakeland, led by running back Damontra Milteer - who surpassed 1,500 yards rushing for the season in the 46-21 win over Poquoson in the first round - is more so.

THE PICK: Lakeland 24-14.
