The LPGA Tour season began in January in the Bahamas and won’t end until mid-November.
In between, the tour makes stops in Australia, Thailand, Singapore, Scotland, Canada, France, Malaysia, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Japan and 16 states.
So no one would fault players for conserving energy and taking some time off, particularly early in the season before the run of major championships begins in earnest.
But Brooke Henderson and sisters Ariya and Moriya Jutanugarn are having none of that.
Those three players — each is ranked among the world’s top 20 — have played in all 12 LPGA Tour events this season and, surprise, are in contention at the Kingsmill Championship.
Moriya Jutanugarn, ranked 11th in the world, earned her first victory on tour when she won the LA Open in late April. She had 18 career top-10s before this season and has added another four, including the win, to her total. She shot a pair of 68s to open Kingsmill and stands around the top 10.
Ariya Jutanugarn, the younger sister, hasn’t won this season, but she does have a tour-best seven top-10s. Ranked third in the world, she has seven career wins.
“Because I like to play,” she said when asked about playing every week. “I feel I can improve, I can learn something when I play the tournament.
“Actually I’m lazy, so when I have too much (time) off, I’m not (doing) much … so better for me to keep playing.”
Ariya Jutanugarn opened at Kingsmill with a 5-under-par 66 and added a second-round 67.
Henderson also has a win this season, claiming the title at the Lotte Championship in Hawaii. The 20-year-old Canadian already has six career wins and 28 top-10s — four coming this season.
“I’m just trying to enjoy every day,” said Henderson, who shot a 65 Friday and is four shots off the lead. “It’s a learning process. Just trying to get better as a person and as a golfer. Hopefully I’ll win another one this season and keep that trend going the next few years.”
Only two other players on the LPGA Tour have played in all 12 events — Alena Sharp and Sarah Jane Smith. Neither player will make the cut this weekend at Kingsmill.
Tour vets in contention
A trio of longtime LPGA Tour fixtures stayed in contention in the second round.
Australian Karrie Webb, German Sandra Gal and Catriona Matthew of Scotland remained near the top 10 halfway through the Kingsmill Championship.
Webb, the 2006 Kingsmill winner, matched her first-round 68 Friday. Although she has 41 career wins (10th-most all-time), Webb has only played in three events this season. She has only one top-10 (a T2 at the Scottish Open) since the end of the 2016 season, but she enters the weekend tied for 11th.
Matthew has four wins on tour — including the 2009 British Open — and ranks 15th all-time on the tour money list with more than $9.6 million in earnings. But Matthew hasn’t finished in the top 10 on tour since the 2016 British Open. She could break that string this weekend after an opening-round 67. She was at 7 under for the tournament when play was called Friday evening with four holes to play.
Gal, who debuted on tour in 2008, shot 67-68 to post 7 under through two rounds and sits four shots off the lead. Her best finish at Kingsmill is a T8, which is also her position after the second round.
New face on the leaderboard
LPGA Tour rookie Robynn Ree is in the midst of one of her best tournaments as a professional.
The 20-year-old former Southern California standout shot a 67 Friday, backing up her first-round 69. The low scores pushed her to 6 under for the tournament and in contention for a top-10 finish. Ree has missed the cut in four of her seven LPGA Tour events this season. The two rounds under par at Kingsmill equal the entire total for the season — she’s played 20 total rounds before this week.
Ree, who finished T5 at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament last year, had a career-best T34 at the Australian Open earlier this season.
Gone for the weekend (maybe?)
Some notable names may not hang around for the weekend at Kingsmill after hanging around the cut line — a number of players still have to finish their second rounds after more than two hours of weather delays Friday.
Michelle Wie, who won in Singapore in March, is in danger of missing her first cut of the season. Wie is just one shot below the cut line at even-par with four holes to play. She is 1 over for her round, with three bogeys and two birdies.
Former Kingsmill champion Lizette Salas is also at even-par overall and is 1 under through 15 holes of her second round.
World Golf Hall of Fame members Laura Davies and Juli Inkster won’t be around for the weekend. Davies finished at 2 over for the tournament, while Inkster was 3 over with two holes to play in her second round.
